I am converting an old Foxpro2 DOS app and for reference I have the foxpro app running in a Windows XP VPC. Certain application flows cause a Too many files open error. Any ideas on how to resolve this? I have tried adding FILES=200 in config.sys as suggested in one blog post but that doesn't work, maybe because this a virtual PC.
I seem to remember that the Windows\System32\config.nt file should contain the settings for FILES= and BUFFERS= on WinNT PCs.

I make sure all of processes of VS Code have exited, but I can’t delete the bin directory.
I tried many tools to find which process is using the directory, but none of them reported.
The problem occurs on all of my Windows devices and I need to manually update each time.

Per the link, you can use Windows Process Explorer to determine which apps are holding "bin" open
In my case it was Teams, and found that by searching for Skype in Windows Process Explorer. Killed it and the update went smoothly.
At present I cannot run it (SQL Developer 4.1) because it hangs on "Restoring Editors" while starting. I suppose I've done it by exiting it before by killing sql developer process because it was hanged on fetching objects to Schema Browser so long...
Maybe I would clean some temporary files but can't find any.
Any ideas?

Extract installation of current version SQL Developer (4.1.0.17.29)
At "c:\Users\MY_USER\AppData\Roaming\SQL Developer\"
I've changed directory name system4.1.0.17.29 to system4.1.0.17.28.
After running newly extracted SQL Developer (4.1.0.17.29) I was prompted to let copy configuration from version 4.1.0.17.28 to 4.1.0.17.29 ;)
Everything works great now. I suppose that running the same (broken) installation after decreasing version could also help.
Remove folders c:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\SQL Developer\system4.1.3.20.78\system_cache*. SQLDeveloper will recreate it after launching.
Just execute sqldeveloper as administrator. It works fine!
In my case the problem was because of windows compatibility issue. So I've selected my windows version and it's stop from randomly crash after startup
Our setup:
Windows 10
Sqldeveloper Versions <= 20.4.0
We observed this problem as well. Even worse while working over a VPN connection. I followed a couple of hints with more or less no effect.
To move
C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Roaming\SQL Developer
to a local directory by adding this line
AddVMOption -Dide.user.dir=c:\temp\sqldev-conf
in the \sqldeveloper\bin\sqldeveloper.conf file gave us some improvement, but the “IndexPreferencesTask” still got stuck several times on startup.
After some more hours on unsuccessful research, we moved back from JDK 11 to JDK 8.
This solved 99% of the problem. The “IndexPreferencesTask” still hangs on startup but for less than a second.
Sounds to me like a problem with JDK 11.
In my case when i changed Tools --> Preferences --> Environment -> Look and Feel to Windows it is solved.
Delete the History files from C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\sqldeveloper
Restart the PC
In my case, the solution was kind of weird. After battling to resolve this for 2 days, no luck. Suddenly, on my mac, I searched for sql developer, not sqldeveloper. It popped up a sqldeveloper application (not sure how that is different from what I have been trying to open ), clicked it and boom, it opened. My guess is that there is a copy of that app on my system that I should have been opening rather than trying to open the reinstalled app. Note: I reinstalled the app after it started misbehaving though.

The problem has been noticed sometime when any network security
patch was installed on your machine. Looks like the patch impacts
your cached data under your user profile folder.
As above Lakh, rtbf and others answered. Removing below folders
will resolve the issue.

I've been writing up a script that runs some server functions using a web-browser interface. I coded up the script on Windows 7 with Internet explorer 8 and it works fine.
As soon as I move it to the production server running Windows 2008 with Internet Explorer 9, it breaks. Finally traced it the point of failure, but I'm a bit stumped how to fix it.
Here's the code that will cause an issue:
$ie = new-object -com "InternetExplorer.Application"
$ie.navigate("http://www.google.com")
$ie.visible = $True
$doc = $ie.document
$Object1 = $doc.getElementByID("pocs")
This pops up an IE windows, and it should be able to search elements by ID. Trouble is, now I get the error
"Cannot find an overload for "getElementById" and the argument count:
"1"."
I can find very very little on this error. The actual issue is actually the variable $doc. If I do a "$doc | get-member" on IE 9 I get:
TypeName: System.__ComObject#{c59c6b12-f6c1-11cf-8835-00a0c911e8b2}
But under IE 8 I get:
TypeName: mshtml.HTMLDocumentClass
So, basically, IE 9 / Windows 2008 is failing to load the web document contents when I call $ie.document. I've tried setting IE9 to compatibility mode, but no luck there.
The $ie.document | get-member does actually show the method of : "getElementById Method Variant getElementById () " so it's in there, but there's no document for it to parse.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
I am equally astonished this has not been fixed yet given the longevity of the issue on various technical forums. However I think I have found the solution, though it would be up to the Microsoft IE team to address at some point.
Like all the threads referenced that have looked into this I have suffered the same issue with the getElementById method, which with no other changes to a couple of test machines (one Windows 2008R2 Enterprise 64bit and one Windows 7 32bit), I can get the same script to work.
Workarounds that worked as temp solution that I didn't like:
Using the dev console in IE11, switch the Document Mode to 8 (9,10,11,Edge (default) don't work) - my automation script works instantly. No changes to IE trusted sites, zone security, protected mode, PowerShell session priveleges). So clearly just a component issue of the IE11 installation of some sort
Installing Office 2013, without ever running or licensing it, the same script works instantly without changing the Document Mode of IE11. Clearly Office does install/register something that fixes the problem (as Rhys Edwards says)
So I set about narrowing down what Office does to enable the COM object required for IE automation by:
Preparing a new Virtual Windows 2008R2 Server , no updates. Ran test script under IE8 - no issues.
Upgraded to IE11. Ran test script - failed as usual.
Took a VM snapshot
Used Regshot to do record the registry and file system
Ran the Office 2013 Pro_SP1 installation, no changes to default options
When Office install completes, did not run office once (at all ever)
Ran test script again - everything works, the IE automation with getElementById calls all back in operation
Took a 2nd VM snapshot
Ran 2nd scan with regshot and analysed the differences
Dumped the properties of my $ie object and also noticed there is far more there than before running Office install. References mshtml.dll and HTMLDocument classes throughout - looks as it should
I can see from the RegShot difference file that MSHTML.dll is ADDED and registered in the GAC (version 7.0.3300.0) by the office installation
What I did next may not be completely approved but:
I located the microsoft.mshtml.dll in the "c:\program files(x86)\Microsoft.net\primary interop assemblies" folder and saved it out of the VM to my local machine desktop
reverted to the pre-office 2013 snapshot
copied the microsoft.mshtml.dll into the VM and installed to the GAC (remember this is a 2008R2 server still on .net 2, I didn't update .net prior to or after IE11 install, only office). I installed to the GAC simply by dragging the file into the c:\windows\assembly view in explorer. In later versions of .Net you need to use gacutil /l
Tested the same script and BOOM, it all works fine. No need to change any IE settings or elevate script privileges or install Office
So to sum up. If you install IE11, to get PowerShell to automate the Document Model, I had to (re-)register the mshtml.dll in the GAC. Why the IE11 installation doesn't ensure this happens is beyond me but I think that the IE team need to look into this.
I also think for those where it 'just works' in IE10/11, you must have a product on the machine that has already registered the mshtml.dll in the GAC (perhaps Office, perhaps Visual Studio or some other MS app). Hence why you are not seeing the same problem that definitely exists.
Hope this helps someone - it was driving me crazy!

As detailed in the comments on the question, there seems to be three solutions to this problem.
Upgrade to PowerShell 3.0: Version 2.0 is only compatible with up to IE8 when it comes to web-scraping and using IE as an object. However, version 3.0 will work with IE9. You can get it here.
Turn off protected mode in IE: Turning of protected mode for the Internet zone under the Security tab in settings seemed to do the trick for me. There are security implications to this that should be carefully considered.
Run the script in admin mode: Simply run the script in an elevated PowerShell prompt.
The last two solutions come from a different SO answer.
I had similar kind of issue and it got resolved by following below steps:
Check for the Microsoft.mshtml.dll on your machine. It should be available at location C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft.NET\Primary Interop Assemblies. If you don't find it at this location, It might be the case that you don't have this dll and this is the reason you are getting this issue.
Find the dll, and try to load the assembly at run time. You can place the dll at any location on you machine and do it.

Yesterday I installed OpenEdge Architect 10.2B (that is Object Oriented Progress adopted to Eclipse IDE) on my Windows 7 premium platform. The installation went fine without any error messages.
When I start OpenEdge Architect I get the following error message:
"Not licensed to run OpenEdge Architect for version 10.2B".
This error message is strange since it is not the case.
Also, it seems like parts of the Eclipse-plugin are blocked
The main menu looks ok
In the views there are error messages like: "Could not create the view: Plug-in com.openedge.pdt.text was unable to load class com.openedge.pdt.text.explorer.OEExplorer...."
I noted that if I open my firewall (F-Secure) and choose to allow all, then everything works fine but then, of course, the computer is vulnerable. Then I thought I should abandon the F-secure firewall and use Windows firewall instead, setting up exceptions for OE Architect. But at this point I can not see what the exceptions should be since there are plenty of processes involved!
Any suggestion on how to proceed? How can I see what is blocked (is it Eclipse related or Eclipse plug-in related or is it something else in the OpenEdge package?)

I solved the issue, this is how I did it:
Open F-secure, change the firewall setting to allow all.
Open Windows firewall, turn it on.
Start OpenEdge Architect
A warning from Windows firewall appears a .\jre\bin/javaw.exe is blocked by the firewall, check the allow boxes and press "Allow access".
Done.
It my be that the license manager is a process itself thatthe Architect is only connecting to - thus the problem with the firewalls. Most of this stuff is either a java process or one of the processes from your \bin directory. To figure out which process is trying to open which port, open a command shell (windows+r, enter 'cmd' and press 'run'), and then run 'netstat -ao', which gives you a list of all processes running and the ports thy are listening on. If you search this list while running the Architect with your firewall turned off, you might be able to find the processes involved with licensing (either a java process or one of the binaries from the aforementioned 'bin' folder).

I am using Microsoft Robotics Studio for a school project and I am getting a strange error when I try to run the Visual Simulation Environment. It was working fine until yesterday and then suddenly it gave me a runtime error saying "Illegal command line arguments... do not use VPLHost directly, use dsshost instead to run a manifest" But I am only clicking on Run in VPL/DSS Manifest editor.
I am running MRDS as administrator and I even tried re-installing MRDS but it is still showing the same MS VPL Runtime error. I tried to search online, but cannot find any suitable solution.
I already tried running the existing samples, I.e. Urban Environment, Multiple Simulated Robots etc. but it still gives me the same error. The strange thing is that it was working perfectly one minute, and then started giving me this error message the next minute, when I had not changed anything in between. In fact, I had wanted to change something in my manifest, so I closed the running VPL application, closed VPL and opened DSS manifest editor, and ran my manifest and that is when I got this error.
What is going wrong? Is some MRDS script using vplhost32.exe instead of dsshost? If so, then where and how do I change it?
I tried running the urban envrionment manifest from the command prompt and Using DSSHost32 directly. This time, it didn't give me a runtime error but an intiialization error. I tried changing port numbers but it still doesn't work. I have deleted many files from my computer to free space (JIC) and it still doesn't work. The window just doesn't open even when I hover over it in Windows 7.
The error message looks like this: Only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network address/port) is normally permitted."
This was even after I checked netstat for free ports and tried but I get this error message. Its either this one or the "Don't use VPLHost directly" if I run it through VPL or DSS Manifest Editor.
Could it be that some external services are interfering with DSSHost/VPLHost? Are there any such services which I could try killing? ANY help/suggestion would help right now as my project is due Thursday and this is a really unfortunate time for it to be acting up like this.
Does the problem reproduce after logging off & logging back on? It's likely that you had a process hanging around that you weren't aware of. Logging off should shut down any processes you personally started.
