I'm linking to an alternate .css for the iphone, but is it possible to link to an alternate .html? I'm not overly keen on going through the original html, although I will if I have to.

Using this detect handheld device in jquery you will be able to know what kind of handheld is loading your page and than you may redirect the user to your new html page.
Something like:

Consider Facebook, when someone likes your photo you get a mini popup notification in the bottom left corner of the screen which stays for a couple of seconds.

HTML or PDF would work fine. You can use a UIWebView to display both formats. Or if there is a standard way of laying everything out that will not change, you can use XML (or RSS).

if you mean the number of pages on the iphone home dash board, then no, you will not be able to query that information legally
