MapQuest Android API and Mapnik - openstreetmap

I have implemented MapQuest's Android API. In the documentation for the general API it says when using the OpenStreetMap data it is possible to use "Custom map tiles via the Mapnik style files". I was wondering if that meant that you could host your own tile server running Mapnik and get the API to use those tiles or something else. There is no more mention of this in any of the documentation that I can find. Can someone help me clear this up please?

The reference to using Mapnik style files has to do with the fact that MapQuest offers the style files to developers who want to tweak them and then generate their own tiles based on OpenStreetMap data. This isn't specific to the Android API, however, and the Android API does not support custom map tiles. I apologize for the confusion (I work at MapQuest).

Mapbox Studio: landuse=residential not available?

I try to build a map for my stormchasing community. It is very important to see urban areas on the map. I tried to add a landuse=residential layer/filter but it seems Mapbox does not support this at all.
Any ideas or solutions on this?
You are correct that the Mapbox Streets v8 tileset does not contain a landuse=residential field. However, this type of data is available in OSM as shown here and can be downloaded using Overpass Turbo - you can refer to the "Add OpenStreetMap data to your Mapbox project" tutorial for steps on how to do that.
Once you've downloaded this data, you can upload it to your Mapbox account, add it as a new layer to your map, and style it accordingly.

react-leaflet with original leaflet plugins

It is more theoretical question, rather than some problem.
I'm planning to develop some wrapper for leaflet (encapsulate work with leaflet for other developer teams with some API in/out), and I'm wondering if to use react-leaflet or to use native leaflet library.
There is very long list of available plugins for leaflet, and as far as i see only +-10 of them implemented for react-leaflet.
From your experience, does all the original leaflet plugins works fine with react-leaflet? How often do you encountered with problem and which one are not working at all?
It should be possible to create a custom component for any react-leaflet extension.

OpenStreetMap Grayscale tiles?

I'm building up experience with web development and my next projects are some web maps. I've looked into Google Maps and Open Street Maps and would like to use OSM for a project as it contains more detailed information of building footprints.
I've tried styling Google Maps which seemed fairly straightforward, but I'm a little lost with OSM. I've got to the point of trying to create my own renders (with TileMill) but this is crashing my system due to the amount of data.
What I essentially need is this (but for the UK);

Are there any resources which you can recommend or how easy/ difficult is this to create myself? I think I would need to create the map (with TileMill or similar and then find my own servers to host), or is there an easy way to convert the standard map to Grayscale?
I want to keep it as simple as possible so please any recommendations?
Turning the standard map to grayscale: I might be very late to this but for anyone else running into this question: I found a very easy solution if you're working with HTML and Javascript using OpenLayers and the standard OpenStreetMap-Tile-Layer in color. I don't know much about web development but this solution worked for me. Upon creating the map, as done in main.js in the example from the link, a class name is defined ('bw')
className: 'bw',
that can be used in index.html to manipulate the style o f it in the part:

My application was altering a pre-built web-map from the qgis2web extension for QGIS. I was able to turn the tile layers from the background map to grayscale so the results would stand out more.
You could use https://github.com/Zverik/leaflet-grayscale to display any tile layer in grayscale. It's a plugin built upon the leaflet map displaying library.

How to download OpenStreetMap tiles from CloudMade?

how to download cloudmade map tiles? i have to download tiles with different zoom levels? how save these tiles to database for later loading? any sample code available? any help is appreciated..
There are different options available to you.
First, you can use the Javascript "Web Maps API". This is useful if you are wanting to show the maps on a website. It will download the required tiles and display them appropriately, and give you the interface to pan and zoom the map. See their pages at http://developers.cloudmade.com/projects/show/web-maps-api
Second option is if you want to access the map tiles directly. They call it their HTTP Maps API. You will need to make the calcuations of which tiles to download, how to arrange them etc for your own application. Have a look at http://developers.cloudmade.com/projects/show/tiles
Finally, although you don't mention it in your question, I see the question is tagged with "iphone" and other related things. Perhaps you want to look at their iPhone SDK, which is similar to the Web Maps API. See http://www.developers.cloudmade.com/wiki/iphone-sdk/Examples for examples on how to use it.

Advice for building simple bar chart, but with custom styling

I have some data that is displayed in a bar chart, using Google's Visualization API. Was simple enough until designers redesigned it... Now it appears to be something that is beyond what Google can help me with.
Given the attached mockup (and note the finer details like reflection and gradients!)- how would you go about building it? Using some existing graphing libraries? Homebrew from the ground up?

If you need to adhere to the custom design requirements as depicted in the image above, I would build a charting application using a more generalized graphics library such as Rapheal.
While it doesn't provide a simple API for plugging data into a chart, it does provide the ability to build a chart with the following:
a variety of shapes (i.e. the bars)
gradients
embedded images (i.e. the background)
You can change the visual effect using CSS.
Ofcourse you can use chuckx recommendation of Rapheal which is a SVG based Javascript Library. It can accept JSON values so say if you have JSON from Google API you could feed in directly.
