We have a site which is based in US (ex. www.example.com). We've been tasked to create multiple sites for users of UK and Australia. Both of these will have different domains (ex. www.example.co.uk and www.example.co.au), These sites will share the same common pages backend. About 80% of the content is the same on all the versions but there will be a few sections like contact, partners and product offerings which are different

About
Products
Contact
UK Site (www.example.co.uk) also has the same pages
Home (The same as US with minor differences like the banner images. The URL will be www.example.co.uk)
About (Different content, the URL should be www.example.co.uk/about)
Products (The same as US with minor content diffences in the offering, but URL should be www.example.co.uk/services)
Contact (Different content, the URL should be www.example.co.uk/contact)
How do I go about setting up the UK and AU version of the site which use the same backend and most of the same content as the US site, but has a few page differences and different domain?
Can any one please recommend a few good CMS tools which will help achieve this?
as far as I can tell, most CMSes will be able to provide you with some form of content-sharing.
It does depend on the amount of content you are having, if you have a relatively small set (e.g. the 4 pages in your answer), then you might be best served by just duplicating the pages. If you are looking at tens, hundreds or more documents, then you should look at a properly structured approach.
Can you give some hints as to the amount of documents?

Once the development for a single domain is over you don't even need a developer for adding more domains. That is you don't need to code for multi domains, just need to learn a few things.

I've tested the Google Books API now with servers in a few different countries (Germany, UK, Netherlands; it should be in Europe) and realized that the results depend heavily on the request's origin region. For some German books (I search by ISBN) I get 20 or 30 results using the German server but nothing on the others and vice versa.
Is there any way to access the complete database Google has to offer? Note that I'm not trying to access anything like text excerpts or other critical content in terms of licensing. I only need the general information like Title, Authors, ISBN, ...

I have the same problem. I found a paragraph in the documentation under "Using the API" (for Google books) that might explain it:
"Setting User Location:
Google Books respects copyright, contract, and other legal restrictions associated with the end user's location. As a result, some users might not be able to access book content from certain countries. For example, certain books are "previewable" only in the United States; we omit such preview links for users in other countries. Therefore, the API results are restricted based on your server or client application's IP address."
My workaround is to search while using a VPN - that returned the titles in English like I wanted to. If there's another way to solve it I'd gladly hear that too.
I was wondering if it's possible to put a custom field onto an Ad Unit that could be used to filtering an API call, and be used to calculate that content's earnings to allow sharing revenue with the site's content creators.
There are more than 500 content creators and Custom Channels are limited to 500, so they cannot be used. I couldn't find any related question or article about that kind of customization.

As I asked to the ADSense forum there is no way to add a custom tag to a banner and filtering by an API call. Me too I needed to share revenues with more than 500 publishers. Actually you can do that with the "ADSense Host" plan

I have a website where I would like to the user to enter a search term and then scrape two other websites and show the user some parsed results.
Since both websites use a lot of JavaScript to return data, I thought of using WWW::Mechanize::Firefox.

Yes, it would be possible to do what you describe; but the internet is not a database.
Have you asked for permission from the owners of the sites that you are hoping to use? I would certainly not agree to an unbounded use of my bandwidth and the contents of my site by a third party.
It would be much more responsible (and easier to implement) a system whereby, by agreement, you gather the information that you need, say, once a day, and store that in a database. Thereafter you can display the information that your own users ask for directly from your own resources.
I've been thinking about an online idea for about 3-4 years now and can't get it out of my head so I've decided to act upon it and see if I can get it working. Currently working a POC and design layout which I plan to tender for development.
The main part of the portal and most important component involves user sub-sites. I am unsure how to tackle the process for a user to create a sub-site during the registration process and/or what path to take.
Let's say the main site is www.abc.net - the user would then register a sub-site based on the credentials they input. E.g. user1.abc.net, mysite.abc.net or joeblog.abc.net... whatever they want and so forth. No SEO required - The site templates are fairly basic and the sub-sites will be accessible through the main site. So the process to be:
User logs onto main site and registers
During registration, user enters details including sub-site name they want
Select the template they want - basically different colour schemes. Functionality to be the same for all templates
their site is created
when the user is logged on they get directed to their sub-site
Ability to edit their sub-site - add content and add extra pages, change details…. etc
General users (registered or anonymous) would be able to browse and search content to the sub-sites via the main site.
Each sub-site to be independent from each other - no content sharing. Basically they are separate websites hosted as sub-sites but need they need some type of editing available like a CMS. Not sure if a shared CMS is possible but the owner has to be able to modify content to their own sub-site.
So my question are…
Do I try and use a Drupal/Wordpress/Joomla CMS with multisite functionality?
Do I try a solution where I have a collection of simple sites that I use for sub-sites, each to have their own database and some type of CMS or WYSIWYG for editing? Is separate CMS even possible for each Sub-site?

As far as I know this would not be possible as the CMS would not have access to your server where the sub-domain is created.
It would be possible to offer something similer using Joomla as it offers the option to apply custom styles (templates) to different pages. You would however have to adopt the following URL convention www.yourdomain.com/userselectedtext.
You can then have a page where users register with your site and the cms creates their page.
User permissions in joomla can be set so only the owner of a particular page can view or edit it.

Im working on a web site that has to be reachable from many countries under the same domain.
Id like to know how can I receive a request with nginx (or any other static file server), and send it to different web servers depending on IP's location.
I mean, what is the point on having multiple db machines on country A and B, if the server that serves you the page is chosen by round robin.

The idea is that your web server will redirect visitors to a location specific HTML page. So that, a guy in India that visits www.example.com will be shown a page customized for India, while a visitor from say Canada will see the Canadian home page.
