How to drop a pin on Google Maps iPhone app via web link? - iphone

I used to just be able to have a link to a coordinate on Google Maps, like https://maps.google.com/maps?q=35.7491455078125,139.382995605469
but now that Apple kicked out the original Maps app, and Google has re-launched another one, links like that no longer drop a pin on the maps of iOS users.
Is there a way to drop a pin on a visitor's Google Maps app with the click of a link?

Sounds like the official Maps URLs would work for you. In your example, this should work (and across platforms, too!):
https://www.google.com/maps/search/?api=1&query=35.7491455078125,139.382995605469
You can read the full documentation at https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/urls/guide

Replace http://maps.google.com with http://maps.apple.com, hopefully that works!

How to launch Google Maps on iPhone via web link?

I am building a site that will have address links as well as image of a map - both of which have a link to Google Maps.
The problem is that when I click on these links using my iPhone - or any address link that shows up in an email, the result is that either the native Apple Maps app opens or the Google Maps in the browser. I want for the native Google Maps app to open every time, and ideally for every user (whose iPhone I have no control of).
If I use the Chrome app for iPhone, then there's a little trick to do this:
http://www.redmondpie.com/how-to-set-google-maps-for-iphone-default-app-for-opening-map-links/
But the reality is that the trick above will not open the Google Maps app. It will open the web version of Google Maps inside the Chrome app. Then an icon shows up at the bottom asking if you want to open the native app instead. This is better than nothing, but far from ideal. I appreciate any help. Thank you. BTW, I'd like to do this without jailbreaking the iPhone - I'm looking for a solution that will work with other people's iPhones.
You can use apple's interface which is a bit more intelligent when using different browsers and devices:
http://maps.apple.com/?q=51.507269,-0.127695
Clicking the above url on the following devices:
iPhone|iPad:
Opens Apple maps app
Android:
Gives you a choice to open in either Google Maps App or Google maps website
Windows Phone:
Opens Google maps mobile website
Windows 8 Desktop:
Opens Google maps website
Apple OS Desktop:
Opens the new maps app (Mavericks)!!
For more info see:
Apple URL Scheme Reference
To open Google native app you need to write:
[[UIApplication sharedApplication] canOpenURL:[NSURL URLWithString:#"comgooglemaps://"]];
Example :
comgooglemaps://?q=Pizza&center=37.759748,-122.427135
I just tested this and it worked in pulling up Google Maps instead of the default Apple Maps application.
Testing Maps
However, after deleting the Google Maps app for iOS, the link fails to open anything because that schema is no longer available and doesn't fallback to a generic maps link... almost seems like you would need to provide two links for Google Maps for iPhone and another generic Apple Map link...
Take a look at this.
It works on every device (for ios / android, it will launch google maps app else browser).
For other devices, it will launch browser.
Simple use case would be:
Construct universal map URI (with encoded params)
Use this URL like -
window.open(mapUrl, '_system');
More info for window.open here
My use case required to open existing in app map navigation into some another dedicated maps app (preferably google maps app) for ios and android devices.
I use ionic v1 + cordova for building native apps. Not sure if this is perfect for your use case but hope this helps.

Link to the new Street View feature of the google iOS web app

As Walt Mossberg von AllthingsD wrote, google added the Street View feature to the Web version of the Google Maps this Thursday.
I played around and it works very well inside Safari. My plan was to integrate this in my App with a direct link to Street View. In my case with some known lat and lng values. This is possible from a non iOS device as described here:
https://stackoverflow.com/a/542965/956433
Sadly this does not work for iOS. Had anyone better luck and was able to build a link for some lat,lng values for Google Street View that works reliably?
This question is obsolete now, with the release of the google maps app for iOS one is able to open the app and show streetview imagery directly. Everything is described here: https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/ios/urlscheme
Thanks google :-)

Is it absolutely not possible to use Google maps in iOS 6..?

I want to know if is it not at all possible to use Google maps on iOS 6 ?
I had one App prepared and now when I am using it iOS 6, It automatically takes Apple maps !
Since I dont want to use Apple maps, So I want to know if any how,Is it possible to use Google maps on
iOS 6 !
You can still google maps, but not on mapkit. The google maps has a very useful API you can use to generate the maps. You won't be able to use MKMapKit thou, but you can use google's static maps API to show the map content.
Edit: here's a new open source project with google maps tile Link and here is a link for the alternative, official, bing maps toolkit Link
The website maps.google.com works fine.
You could now. Google present iOS SDK for iOS 6. http://googlegeodevelopers.blogspot.com/2012/12/a-new-way-to-add-google-maps-to-your.html

How to show custom Google Map in iPhone app using MapKit?

Is there any way to show my custom Google map ("My maps" feature in Google Maps) in my iPhone App (MapKit)?
I know I can do some things with the maps using MKAnnotation (http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4651847/google-maps-shading-ios), but I would like to create and edit custom map online (through Google Maps) and then display it on Google Maps (my personal map, associated with specified Google Account) on iPhone/iPad.
Im not aware of anyway you can access your 'My Maps' from within MapKit. One option would be to use Route Me which is an open source map view for iOS. Its fairly well developed now and straight forward to implement. I'm not sure specifically how you would use your maps, but changing a few URLs here and there in the code should do the trick.
At that point, if you're rendering google maps, you should abandon MapKit and use the Google Maps iOS SDK (https://developers.google.com/maps/documentation/ios/start)
I'm not sure from there's a native binding in there to access 'My Maps'.
I recommend you look at MapBox that provide full Map tiles customization as well as markers and overlays that can be used in iOS almost without any effort.

using BING maps on iPhone / iPad sdk

has anyone had any experience using BING maps on the iphone/ipad? We have an application which uses the googlemaps default map in the SDK, but we now have a requirement to use BING maps instead.
I am thinking we'd use the BING API via a UIWebView?
Has anyone else tried this? Thanks for any information!
I've used a bing API n a UIWebView, however the JS is rather costly, yet until I find and discover a BING SDK for the iPhone/iPad will probably have ot resort to that.
One other thing you can try (which I've just started down the path of), is trying to use HTML5 to cache a bunch of the is parts to it and see if that might speed the implementation up.
Hope that helps!
Apparently, the http://ibing.codeplex.com/ project on Codeplex was created with the intent of adding Bing Maps support for iOS and MacOS developers. It doesn't look to have been updated in over a year, and I don't know if it even works. Just thought I'd post it for anyone interested in checking it out.
this maybe another approach worth looking into
https://github.com/mtigas/iOS-MapLayerDemo
Recently announced and posted on the Bing Maps Blog on 5 May 2011, a new Bing Maps control/SDK is now available for iOS.
The Bing Maps iOS Control is an Objective-C control for embedding maps directly into native iOS apps. With a rich, gesture-based UI provided by Seadragon, the Bing Maps iOS Control provides support for adding pushpins and other overlays to the map, allows your device location to be displayed, and provides the ability to retrieve contextual information for a given map location.
