JQuery Wildcard for using atttributes in selectors - jquery-selectors

I've research this topic extensibly and I'm asking as a last resort before assuming that there is no wildcard for what I want to do.
I need to pull up all the text input elements from the document and add it to an array. However, I only want to add the input elements that have an id.
I know you can use the \S* wildcard when using an id selector such as $(#\S*), however I can't use this because I need to filter the results by text type only as well, so I searching by attribute.
I currently have this:
values_inputs = $("input[type='text'][id^='a']");
This works how I want it to but it brings back only the text input elements that start with an 'a'. I want to get all the text input elements with an 'id' of anything.
I can't use:
values_inputs = $("input[type='text'][id^='']"); //or
values_inputs = $("input[type='text'][id^='*']"); //or
values_inputs = $("input[type='text'][id^='\\S*']"); //or
values_inputs = $("input[type='text'][id^=\\S*]");
//I either get no values returned or a syntax error for these
I guess I'm just looking for the equivalent of * in SQL for JQuery attribute selectors.
Is there no such thing, or am I just approaching this problem the wrong way?

Actually, it's quite simple:
var values_inputs = $("input[type=text][id]");

Your logic is a bit ambiguous. I believe you don't want elements with any id, but rather elements where id does not equal an empty string. Use this.
values_inputs = $("input[type='text']")
.filter(function() {
return this.id != '';
});

Try changing your selector to:
$("input[type='text'][id]")

I figured out another way to use wild cards very simply. This helped me a lot so I thought I'd share it.
You can use attribute wildcards in the selectors in the following way to emulate the use of '*'. Let's say you have dynamically generated form in which elements are created with the same naming convention except for dynamically changing digits representing the index:
id='part_x_name' //where x represents a digit
If you want to retrieve only the text input ones that have certain parts of the id name and element type you can do the following:
var inputs = $("input[type='text'][id^='part_'][id$='_name']");
and voila, it will retrieve all the text input elements that have "part_" in the beginning of the id string and "_name" at the end of the string. If you have something like
id='part_x_name_y' // again x and y representing digits
you could do:
var inputs = $("input[type='text'][id^='part_'][id*='_name_']"); //the *= operator means that it will retrieve this part of the string from anywhere where it appears in the string.
Depending on what the names of other id's are it may start to get a little trickier if other element id's have similar naming conventions in your document. You may have to get a little more creative in specifying your wildcards. In most common cases this will be enough to get what you need.

Using Powershell and HTMLBody.Replace how do I replace values inside an existing table?

I have an existing email template file for Outlook with To, CC, Subject and Body prefilled.
I can replace the values I need on the subject just fine, however, when it comes to the HTMLBody part, it only replaces values outside the table; I've tested this by putting all 15 placeholders outside the table.
In Powershell, I defined an array with the items that will be replaced and another that reads the values from a JSON file, then I loop through both in order to replace the values on the HTMLBody.
This is the code in question:

There's more values but for the sake of brevity, I only included a few of the values, from my understanding, the issue is that some of those values are inside a HTML table cell but I don't know if I can access the table or cells directly.
Firstly, do not use MailItem.HTMLBody property as variable - it is expensive to set and read, and it might not be the same HTML you set as Outlook performs some massaging and validation. Introduce an explicit variable, set it to the value of HTMLBody, do all your string replacements in a loop using that variable, then set the MailItem.HTMLBody property once.
You can also try to output the value of that variable to make sure the old values to be replaced are really there and are not broken by HTML formatting or encoding.
For the sake of future reference, the only way I was able to fix this, was by grabbing the html code off the email that I based my email template off.
I organized it so that any tags I want replaced are in their own line without anything else other than the spaces for indentation, then defined it as a variable that goes through the replace cycle and gets assigned to the MailItem.HTMLBody property after the replace cycle.

What function do I use in a Salesforce apex trigger to trim a text field?

I'm new to writing apex triggers. I've looked through a lot of the apex developer documentation, and I can't seem to find the combination of functions that I should use to automatically trim characters from a text field.
My org has two text fields on the Case object, which automatically store the email addresses that are included in an email-to-case. The text fields have a 255 character limit each. We are seeing errors pop up because the number of email addresses that these fields contain often exceeds 255 characters.
I need to write a trigger that can trim these text fields to the last ".com" before it hits the 255 character limit.
Perhaps I'm going about this all wrong. Any advice?
You can use replace() function in Apex.

The main problems that I see are that other extensions are not covered (like ".net" urls) and that urls that have a ".com" appearing previous to the last one (something like "https://www.comunications.com"). But I think that this covers most of the use cases.
Why not increasing the length of that specific field? Trimming the text might cause data loss or unusable. Just go to object manager find that object and that specific field. Edit field and increase the length.

How to get column title for each row entry

I am using a row id to obtain the cells for a single row. However, the response returns the column id but not the title of the column. In an attempt to make the code readable for others it would be helpful to also obtain the column title. I was thinking of doing this by using the column id that is obtained in the getRow function but I am not entirely sure how to catch it. Below is the basic getRow function for reference. I appreciate any assistance. Thank you in advance all.

My preferred way of addressing this is to dynamically create a column map on my first GET /sheets/{sheetId} request.
Let's say we have a sheet with three columns: Japan, Cat, and Cafe. Here is one way to make a column map.

Now, you can reference your specific columns like this: columnMap["Japan"], columnMap["Cat"], and columnMap["Cafe"] or you can use dot notation if you prefer.
Basically, what we're doing is creating a dictionary to map the column titles to the corresponding column id.

I have a couple specific recommendations that will help you.
Try to consolidate your API calls.
I then want to use that columnID to call getColumns(columnId) to obtain the title.
This is 'work' that you don't need to do. A single GET /sheets/{sheetId} will include all the data you need in one call. It's just a matter of parsing the JSON response.
Use this as an opportunity to improve your ability to work with JSON.
I do not know how to catch the columnId once getRow() is called.
The response is a single object with nested arrays and objects. Learning to navigate the JSON in a way that makes sense to you will come in really handy.
I would recommend saving the response from a GET sheet call as it's own JSON file. From there, you can bring it into your script and play with your logic to reference the values you want.

Autocomplete with Firebase

How does one use Firebase to do basic auto-completion/text preview?
For example, imagine a blog backed by Firebase where the blogger can tag posts with tags. As the blogger is tagging a new post, it would be helpful if they could see all currently-existing tags that matched the first few keystrokes they've entered. So if "blog," "black," "blazing saddles," and "bulldogs" were tags, if the user types "bl" they get the first three but not "bulldogs."
My initial thought was that we could set the tag with the priority of the tag, and use startAt, such that our query would look something like:

But this would also return "bulldog" as one of the results (not the end of the world, but not the best either). Using startAt('bl').endAt('bl') returns no results. Is there another way to accomplish this?
(I know that one option is that this is something we could use a search server, like ElasticSearch, for -- see https://www.firebase.com/blog/2014-01-02-queries-part-two.html -- but I'd love to keep as much in Firebase as possible.)

As Kato suggested, here's a concrete example. We have 20,000 users, with their names stored as such:
/users/$userId/name
Oftentimes, users will be looking up another user by name. As a user is looking up their buddy, we'd like a drop-down to populate a list of users whose names start with the letters that the searcher has inputted. So if I typed in "Ja" I would expect to see "Jake Heller," "jake gyllenhaal," "Jack Donaghy," etc. in the drop-down.
I know this is an old topic, but it's still relevant. Based on Neil's answer above, you more easily search doing the following:

The \uf8ff character used in the query above is a very high code point
in the Unicode range. Because it is after most regular characters in
Unicode, the query matches all values that start with queryString.
As inspired by Kato's comments -- one way to approach this problem is to set the priority to the field you want to search on for your autocomplete and use startAt(), limit(), and client-side filtering to return only the results that you want. You'll want to make sure that the priority and the search term is lower-cased, since Firebase is case-sensitive.
This is a crude example to demonstrate this using the Users example I laid out in the question:
For a search for "ja", assuming all users have their priority set to the lowercased version of the user's name:

This should only return the names that actually begin with "ja" (even if Firebase actually returns names alphabetically after "ja").
I choose to use limitToFirst(20) to keep the response size small and because, realistically, you'll never need more than 20 for the autocomplete drop-down. There are probably better ways to do the filtering, but this should at least demonstrate the concept.
Hope this helps someone! And it's quite possible the Firebase guys have a better answer.
(Note that this is very limited -- if someone searches for the last name, it won't return what they're looking for. Hence the "best" answer is probably to use a search backend with something like Kato's Flashlight.)
It strikes me that there's a much simpler and more elegant way of achieving this than client side filtering or hacking Elastic.
By converting the search key into its' Unicode value and storing that as the priority, you can search by startAt() and endAt() by incrementing the value by one.

Make Lucene index a value and store another

I want Lucene.NET to store a value while indexing a modified, stripped-down version of the stored value. e.g. Consider the value:
this_example-has some/weird (chars) 100%
I want it stored right like that (so that I can retrieve exactly that for showing in the results list), but I want lucene to index it as:
this example has some weird chars 100
(you see, like a "sanitized" version of the original value) for a simplified search.
I figure this would be the job of an analyzer, but I don't want to mess with rolling my own. Ideally, the solution should remove everything that is not a letter, a number or quotes, replacing the removed chars by a white-space before indexing.
Any suggestions on how to implement that?
This is because I am indexing products for an e-commerce search, and some have realy creepy names. I think this would improve search assertiveness.

If you don't want a custom analyzer, try storing the value as a separate non-indexed field, and use a simple regex to generate the sanitized version.

You mention that you need another Analyzer for some searching functionality. Dont forget the PerFieldAnalyzerWrapper which will allow you to use different analyzers within the same document.

You are correct that this is the work of the analyzer. And I'd start by using a tool like luke to see what the standard analyzer does with your term before getting into what to use -- it tends to do a good job stripping noise characters and words.
