I have inherited a Spring project that consists of 3 different distinct projects. There is a series of ANT files that build the project and deploy it to a Tomcat. There is an ANT target called 'build' that does this.
The trouble is that when the tomcat server is running, I can't deploy - instead I have to stop the server, deploy and then start the server again.
I noticed that the 'VMware vFabric' server seems to support what I want when I create a spring project via a MVC template in STS.
Does anyone know how I can achieve this for an existing Spring MVC project that uses an ANT build?
What is the error you getting?
Also is your ANT script like as suggested by Tomcat docs? This has worked for me without any problems.

You need to download the kie-workbench from here

and then put the tomcat war inside tomcat/webapps
I have a couple of questions concerning the way Eclipse 4.3 and JBoss EAP 6.1 work together.
The first would be concerning the Server clean function. Does it matter if the server is running or not when that function is selected within Eclipse? I have tried both ways and get no indication one way or the other that it has preformed the task.
The other question concerns the hot deploy. I'm just starting a project so I have errors in my files, mostly the configuration files. Everything complies clean. When Eclipse deploys my war file it does so with something like 0.0.1-SNAPSHOT.war. It's always the same name so I can't tell if mu updates have been deployed.
The way I'm currently processing my deploys is to:
1. Undeploy the war file from within the Server Admin page
2. Do a Maven clean
3. Do a project clean
4. Do a war build
5. Redeploy from within the Server Admin page.
So this question would be how to determine if my current changes have been deployed? Is there a better way of doing it than the way I currently doing it?

Since you are using Maven, you could use the Maven JBoss Deployment plugin. This would make the entire process automated. Sometimes the Eclipse integration doesn't work like you expect it to. Additionally, you should see on the JBoss command line console from where you started JBoss, that the old war is undeployed and deployed.
I want to run web based Maven project on glassfish server. I am totally new on maven. However, i have successfully build the maven project and glassfish server is up and running also. Moreover, there is WAR file also in target folder but i am confused what is the next step to run that project on glassfish ?

You have different options to solve this task:
If you are new to Eclipse I suggest to change to NetBeans. It comes with integrated support for application server deployments. You just add your maven (or nearly any other type of project like WAR, EJB and EAR) project and your desired application server instance (Glassfish) and you are ready: Right-click your project and choose Deploy and it'll get deployed to your server. NetBeans also supports hot-deployment.
You can deploy your WAR file manually in GLASSFISH_ROOT/glassfish/domains/domain1/autodeploy and it'll get deployed if your server is running. But this is not very efficient during development.
If you want to stay with Eclipse you can use the maven-glassfish-plugin or this maven plugin to do the deployment for you. I'm not sure which one is better but this topic is also discussed in this question and this question.
I am a beginner with struts2 and I have few struts2 projects downloaded from a website, but they all are created as simple java projects and not as web-projects, so I am unable to deploy them on my Tomcat or JBoss AS server through Eclipse.
How can simple java projects be deployed on a Java EE server?
Your best bet is download sample applications from Struts2 official sites and deploy them on any of the server of your choice.
Those sample application comes with all required dependencies as well will give you idea about structuring of S2 application as well flow and configurations
I created a structure similar to the one shown on website and manually added all the files required and it worked.
In my eclipse web application I made a Web Project and a Library Project. The Web Project referenced the Library Project.
When I started the Server, every time I change a code in the Library Project and build it. The server wants to restart and it does not redeploy by the Web Project only. I do not want to restart the server because it takes a lot of time waiting the startup of the server.
Another is I am developing portlets using Liferay Portal and every time I change the Library Project, the auto-deploy of Liferay comes in but the Library Project Jar is locked and resulted to crash the portlet and did not deploy it until I restart the server.
Please Help!!!
In Java EE perspective find "Servers" tab at the bottom, delete your EAR out of there.

If you install the nightly build of Liferay IDE (eclipse plugins for Liferay) it has support for delta-deployment where after the initial deployment (full deploy) it will only deploy the delta or just the individual files that you change as you save them (a single JSP or CSS file, etc).
