I have a subreport in a crystal report but there are 0 records returned, but the subreport insists on pulling every order remark ever entered yet still displaying 0 remarks.
It's very odd, it says "reading records 0 of 150000" and keeps increasing.
The subreports only selection critera is the company code, the customer code and the order number. they are all passed with the "{?PM-..." thing going on.
I opened a blank subreport's preview and the SQL didn't even make mention of the selection criteria. the query run by itself would indeed show every remark.
Any thoughts on how this can happen?
Subreport Formula:
({E_ORD_H.COMP_CODE} = {?Pm-E_ORD_H.COMP_CODE})
and

When a Crystal Report behaves like that it means that there is some logic that cannot be done on the DB server, so it must be done locally. Usually this is caused by using a CR function in the record selection formula that doesn't translate into the DB's language.
In this case, I believe it is when the parameters are null that is causing it (For example, the statement {E_ORD_H.COMP_CODE}=<null> does not mean that CR will be able to anticipate this situation and substitute {E_ORD_H.COMP_CODE} is null in its place in the subreport's query. Instead, you need to explicitly check for those null-valued parameters:
not(isnull({?Pm-E_ORD_H.COMP_CODE}))
and {E_ORD_H.COMP_CODE} = {?Pm-E_ORD_H.COMP_CODE}
and not(isnull({?Pm-E_ORD_H.CUST_CODE}))

Not sure what's going on here. I'm creating a report using two tables. I do an inner join on both tables to obtain the rows I need. I'm sure the proper rows exist because I have taken the DB query that Crystal Reports generates for you and ran it on sql developer and it returns the appropriate rows. Not sure why my report would return empty if it's grabbing the proper rows and the DB has been verified using Crystal Report's "Verify Database" tool.
Check and Double check each section of your report, you might have left some Suppression formula. Secondly check and double check Record Selection filters in the report.
Sometimes what we don't see the first time, miraculously appears the second time.
I found a solution that another Tech had posted:
New Formula:
{Product.Size} <> “xsm” or IsNull({Product.Size})
Unfortunately, when preview your report, you will find that this doesn’t work. That is not because of a mistake in our logic but rather, what I consider to be a bug in Crystal Reports. If I took this exact same condition and applied it to the database records using a query analyzer or querying tool, I would see the blank records. Unfortunately, Crystal is not allowing the null values to come through even though our formula says that they should.
The trick to circumventing this bug is to put the IsNull() check FIRST in the formula.
Thus, if we rearrange the condition to this:
IsNull({Product.Size}) or {Product.Size} <> "xsm"
WORKED LIKE A CHARM
Problem is, if I select criteria for the second OR statement ({HiredRate.UTRANSDOC}startswith{?TransYN}) and NO for the first ({HiredRate.UTRANSWEB}startswith{?WebYN}) I get only one record that meets the TransYN criteria. If I switch places in the formula putting ({HiredRate.UTRANSDOC}startswith{?TransYN}) 1st I get all of the data.
When I run the SQL query I get all of the data no matter what order they are in. The Crystal Preview only gives me all of the data on the first from the OR section.
The only thing that stands out looking at the data from SQL is that the one record Crystal is returning has YES in the Transdoc field and the Transweb field is blank. All other records show YES for Transdoc and NULL for the Transweb field.

This is happening because the {HiredRate.UTRANSWEB} is null - the rest of the expression is therefore evaluating as null in Crystal, even though (logically) it shouldn't.
When the first two or conditions are swapped around, the {HiredRate.UTRANSDOC} condition evaluates as true and the rest of the expression is short-circuited - which is why records are then selected.
Issue
I have a report in CR 2008 that I inherited from someone else
A sub-report in the report pulls its data from a database view
A field exists, "TRANSCBFLAG" in the view -- it's a string with values of "Y", "N", or "D"
The view has these values
The report displays every other value, but not this one field.
Attempted Resolutions
Suppression attribute? -- No, it's unchecked
Field type issue? -- No, it's a string
Font and background? -- No, it's black font / white background
Suppression / formatting formulas? -- no formulas on display or suppression in subreports or report
Space constraints? -- stretched the field out below all other fields -- still shows as blank
Check to make sure Crystal can see the data -- right-clicked field, select "Browse Field Data", and it came back with the three potential values. So, it can see them in the DB at least, and potentially even in the fields itself.
Just a local Crystal Issue? -- No; I uploaded the report to Business Objects XI for a test and all fields still display except that one.
Question
Where in the process could I be going wrong? It shows when I run the view directly from the database, and every other field shows perfectly in Crystal the first time.
I would assume you did 'Verify Database' but if not that's the first thing I would have tried.
And just a piece of advice... always, always, always run your reports off of a command you write yourself instead of using Crystal's GUI to let you select tables/views/procs. This allows you to make pretty much any kind of change to the query you want and even completely change the source from where your data is coming without wiping all your report controls away. If the modified query has the same field names it will always work seemlessly and if not it will give you a chance to redirect which fields are supposed to come from where. Otherwise... you will have to recreate everything as you just experienced.
There may be a more correct answer, but in a pinch, removing the view from my report (thus removing all fields), adding the view again, and redoing all fields caused the field to display correctly. Not sure how or why.
A further explanation would be appreciated, but for now, that's all I've got.
I had the same issue on a new report I'd created and finally found that the issue was in one of the parameters I used in my command SQL - it had double }} at the end. Eliminating one of the }s allowed the query to return data.
That said, go over the SQL in your database expert with a fine toothed comb, and you'll likely find the issue!

There are no equivalent answers in Crystal Reports, at least not in the versions I have used. Crystal Reports more or less simply dumps the data out into the report.
That said, if you are in a detail row, and you want to find out what the next value of a field will be, you can use:
next({YourColumn})
You can also find out the previous column value by using this:
previous({YourColumn})
Keep in mind that Next() won't work on the last record, and Previous() won't work on the first record.
I'll have to double-check, but I believe there is an OnLastRecord function that returns TRUE if you are on the last record.
First, welcome to SO!
Second, you sound new to Crystal Report's purpose is to display data, not perform the kind of calculations you're talking about. CR usually goes record-by-record through the data, displaying (or suppressing) each record, and adding group headers & footers.
To answer your question, LittleBobbyTables does give a few good pointers. To see the entire list of functions available to you, there is a list in the Formula Editor (see pic below). Press F1 for detailed descriptions of each command.
You can also:
Create a "Running Total Formula" that will evaluate each record and give a calculation in the group footer.
Do the calculations outside of Crystal Reports and only feed the end result in (perhaps with an unlinked join to your primary table).
The most complex option is to make a subreport that does the calculation and feeds the result back to the main report

I have a problem with running Total in Crsystal report9
if their is no values available for a Paticular field how can we return the running total as '0'
Instead of display the Running Total directly in your report create a Formula Field based on the Running Total and drag it into the report.
Your formula should look like this (Crystal Syntax)...
if ISNULL({#RunningTotalField}) then
"0.00"
else
ToText(RunningTotalField, 2)
If there is no data for that particular group, then Crystal won't show it easily. Your options are :
1) Use subreports to display the values for a particular group, and keep the main report just looking at the table(s) containing the group headers.
2) Use a stored procedure as the source so you have full control over the SQL that is run.
The problem is that as soon as you use a field to group, Crystal will only return records where that field has been used. If it was simply in the Details section you could modify the link to a LEFT JOIN and it wouldn't matter, but the group forces the INNER JOIN which means the groups without data are not returned.
Unfortunately Running Totals don't show up if there are no records that match your criteria. An alternative is to use a set of formulas calculated in various sections of the report. The technique is widely described in the Crystal literature. For example, this TekTips gives a very succinct overview of your options.
You set up an initialising formula in each header, with the evaluation time directive "WhilePrintingRecords". This approach was the only one available for doing running totals in the "good ol' days" before RunningTotal objects were available.
