UILabel not wrapping correctly after text change - iphone

I'm working via the IB and have a UILabel that's stretched almost to the end of the layout. I have it set with Lines=2, because the max amount of lines it should take is 2. However if it's only 1 line long, I would like it to have a vertical justification of top.
Label settings in IB:
Lines:2
Line breaks: Word wrap
In code, in the viewDidLoad method I set the text of the UILabel. However as part of the functionality at a point the text must change. This is my code:
[_main_lbl1 setText:[myUI MAIN_TITLE]]; //Always only 1 line
[_main_lblsub1 setText:[myUI SUB_TITLE]]; //May be 1 or 2 lines
[_main_lblsub1 sizeToFit]; //Causes vertical alignment (I believe)
Whenever I change the text and rerun sizeToFit, the text wrapping becomes totally messed up. Instead of reaching almost the end of the UILabel as set up in the IB, in some cases the text will wrap at little more than half the distance, in some cases it doesn't wrap at all.

In the first label it seems to be working ok, the second label doesn't wrap at all.
Is there anything I have to do to keep the text wrapping when changing the UILabel text? Anything else I'm missing?

The issue is that you're using sizeToFit. Which stretches the label out to fit the text. If you need to change the size you can use:
CGSize maxSize = CGSizeMake(320, 9999); // 999 means it can be as tall as you like
CGSize textSize = [label.text sizeWithFont:label.font
constrainedToSize:maxSize];
label.size = textSize;

You shouldn't have to do anything special. It will automatically wrap the text to fit when you change it. Otherwise the text would run out of the text labels bounds (which is not what you want). Your problem is that sizeToFit permanently changes the frame of the label. It makes it as small as possible while still showing the text. You are having it resize its frame to the original text and then you are changing the text so it is no longer sized properly. You should reset the frame back to it's original, change the text, and finally call size to fit again.
In viewDidLoad:
self.originalFrame = self.mainLabelSub1.frame;
Then in viewWillAppear:
self.mainLabel1.frame = self.originalFrame;
self.mainLabel1.text = #"New Text";
Note:
A good way to see the borders of the text label to get an idea for the wrapping potential is to temporary set the background of the label to something like magentaColor that stands out.

UILabel Text Not Wrapping

I am working on a Swift project with Storyboards where I want text to wrap in a label. In the old Objective-C version where I did not use a Storyboard I used the following settings and things worked perfectly.

I have been reading about the potential auto layout issues with preferred width settings. I currently have them set to auto layout and the label itself is set to a width of 560. I've added a constraint to keep the label 20 pixels from the trailing superview and while I thought this would work I still cannot get the text to wrap. The dimension settings are below.
Can someone explain how to get the text to wrap?
First, the good news: You have set the label to 2 lines and Word Wrap. So it can wrap. Excellent.
Now you must make sure the label is tall enough. Either give it no height constraint, or give it a big enough height constraint that it can accommodate two lines.
Finally, you must limit its width. This is what causes the text to wrap. If you don't limit the label's width, it will just keep growing rightward, potentially continuing off the screen. The limit on the label's width stops this rightward growth and causes the text to wrap (and the label to grow downward instead).
You can limit width in several ways. You can have an actual width constraints. Or you can have a leading constraint and a trailing constraint, to something relatively immovable, such as the superview. And there is a third way: on the Size inspector (which you do also show, at the bottom right of your question), set the Preferred Width (it is shown at the top of the Size inspector): this is the width at which, all other things being equal, the label will stop growing to the right and wrap and grow down instead.
Declare your UILabel programmatically and give
yourUILabel.contentMode = .scaleToFill
yourUILabel.numberOfLines = 0
yourUILabel.leadingMargin(pixel: 10)
yourUILabel.trailingMargin(pixel: 10)
This worked for me.
Your text will wrap if you have provided lines number more than 1. However you may not be able to see it wrap if the label height is not enough to show the content. I suggest you to remove the height constraint or increase its value.
In case this helps anybody: I had followed the advice given here to fix my label not wrapping to two lines but nothing worked. What worked for me was I first deleted some of the relevant constraints in storyboard (I'm using auto layout) and saw that the label wrapped properly. I slowly added back the constraints I needed and everything still seems to work fine. So deleting and remaking your constraints may help.
What fixed this problem was changing the label type to "Placeholder" under Intrinsic Size in IB. When I changed this the text wrapped and the warnings went away.
As I see you interface builder. There are two problems. First one is with your constraints, and another one is with the property.
You gave it a fixed height which is wrong while line wrap. You need to make the auto-resizing label, i.e. remove height and add the bottom constraint or simple remove height depend on your situation. Your text is moving to the next line, but due to fixed constraint, you can't see it.
You enable the option to clip subviews which is wrong as it cuts your view and you are unable to view wrap word.
Add a new case:
DO NOT add constraints to your label with a TEXTVIEW, or the label will expand to right without limitation.
In my case i set my parent stackview alignment from center to fill and set UILabel to
label.textAlignment = NSTextAlignment.right

UITextView : Changing text colour modifies text position

I've got a UITextView with a small text in it. It displays correctly with black text on white background. However, when I want to change the text colour to a colour other than black, the text position changes (as if there was an empty line added at the beginning of the text).
With no colour change or with textView.textColor = [UIColor blackColor]; :
When I change to another colour, here textView.textColor = [UIColor blueColor]; :
The code line I've given really is the only code element that changes, and even if the colours in the background and the text are different, this is because they are generated randomly, in a complete other part of my code. The content of the text NEVER had any influence on the display before, and when I change the text colour it ALWAYS looks like in the 2nd picture.
I am stunned by this behaviour, as textColor shouldn't be modifying anything else than the font colour, should it ? Plus the fact that when I change to blackColor, no weird behaviour.

Where do you exactly change the colors?
You are changing some thing like
a)autoresizing the views (or)
b)Aligning text in that view (or)
c)Frame size of your textView can be smaller than the font size of your textview (or)
d)your text would be longer than actual size of the frame.
I would like to ask you one question.
Why do you use UITextView instead of UILabel??
I'm asking because textview will bring the scrollview, when the text is longer than your frame size.Probably that would be your problem I hope..

UITableView with text that is both right-aligned and indented

I wanted to make a UITableView with text that is both right-aligned and indented as depicted in the image below:
Unfortunately, I can not do this by writing :-
cell.textLabel.textAlignment = UITextAlignmentRight;
cell.indentationLevel = 10; // or even -10
Can this be done using UITableView's properties? If not, the only way I could think of is using [myString drawInRect:withFont:]; but I would like to go through methods based on alignment and indentation before getting into that [I have already written code for that :-) ], so other work-arounds are welcome!
Additional info: The indentation varies with accelerometer values so I can not have hard-coded Label frame positions. I've uploaded sample code at github in which I've used only the alignment and indentation info so far, so continuing to use that would make this easier.
Subclass UITableViewCell and you can position the frame of the text label however you like. In the if statement where you dequeueReusableCellWithIdentifier: where a reusable cell doesn't exist, just modify the frame and then set the label to use the adjusted frame with setFrame. The autoresizing mask should remain the same.
You could always create your own custom cells and place a UITextLabel in the cell, and make the UITextLabel's alignment right aligned.
Also set the autoresizing mask of the UITextLabel to the right so the indentation distance stays the same no matter the orientation.

UILabel animated resize side effect

I came across issue where I need to animate height change of UILabel frame or its enclosing view's frame. Label is multiline.
The issue is that given with large text which does not fit initially into label(say it takes 3 lines), then animating the label's height to increase, immediately changing 3 line to 4 and then animating the frame increase.
Opposite effect is when the text fully fit into label(4 lines), then I animate height decrease, 4 lines are instantly becoming 3 and only then I see animating frame size decrease.
This is of course not good for an eye.
What I expect is something like keep the label's origin.y intact and then as frame is increasing the more text is revealing from the bottom. The ellipsis may convert to missing word instantly, that is not a problem.
If you want to keep origin.y intact then you have to animate it with CoreAnimation stuff.
Set once:
label.layer.anchorPoint = CGPointMake(0,0); //I believe 0,0 is the upper left or it was 0,1?
after doing this you just need to change the size accordinly:
I would measure the text first (With NSString's methods)and see if the label needs to be resized.
In case it needs to then adjust label.numberOfLines and label.layer.bounds = CGRectMake(label.layer.bounds.origin.x,label.layer.bounds.origin.y,
label.layer.size.width, newHeight);

Multi-line UITableViewCell using UITableViewCellStyleValue2 style

I'm trying to figure out how to replicate the UITableViewCellStyleValue2 style so that the detail text can be multiple lines - as seen in the 'address' cells in the Contacts app. Like the Contacts app, some of the fields (like street name) are optional; so it would show say 3 lines instead of 4, if the street was not nil.
I'm I missing a trick, or do I have to create a custom cell in IB? How to ensure the text and detail text labels line-up with other UITableViewCellStyleValue2 cells?

Quickly tried it, and it works - just need to set the font size down a bit.
It sounds to me like you'll have to create a custom UITableCell. The only way to ensure the text lines up is to get the margin/text width values correct, which can be done via trial and error, or using a measuring tool such as xScope.
Create a custom cell for you table and place a UILabel and a UITextView inside it. Position the label & text view to match their x,y positions to the other cells you are using in that table. You insert "\n" in the textview's text wherever you want line breaks to occur. You resize the textview height depending on the number of lines in the textview using something like:
CGRect frame = yourTextView.frame;
frame.size.height = yourTextView.contentSize.height;
yourTextView.frame = frame;
return frame.size.height + 20.0; // Pad the cell's height as necessary for your applicaion
I also had the problem that the textLabel and the detailTextLabel had a different position. Solution: For the detailTextLabel use the same height like the textLabel (e.g. 13)
