Unit Of Work and Entity Framework 5 Not Refreshing Entity - entity-framework

Not sure why this just started happening, but I have a situation where an entity I am reading from the database doesnt contain the new values that were updated from a stored procedure before. I see the changes in the database after my stored procedure makes the update, and I also call UnitOfWork.Commit to save any other changes. I think make a call to get this item again, and the values are not the same as the ones in the database. Any reason for this? I am not grabbing this item anywhere before the update so I dont know how EF knows about it the first time I grab it after the update.

I'm going to guess Entity Framework is caching those values somehow. I would try using the Refresh() method to force Entity Framework to go back to the data store with RefreshMode.StoreWins to ensure the data store values win.

I moved some logic around so the item is updated before any EF calls.

Entity Framework 6 AsNoTracking<TEntity>(), but for a single entity

I'm working on a unit of work and repository set-up for Entity Framework, where I want to make sure only changed entities, that have been through an Update method on the repository, are actually saved to the database.
The IQueryable extension, AsNoTracking, makes sure that all entities fetched from the IDbSet are not being tracked, but if I want to read a single entity, by it's primary key (using Find()), there seems to be no way to make sure the entity isn't tracked?
I don't want to Detach/Attach, as that ruins the options to, lazily, fetch complex properties.
What am I missing?
Nothing.
Find has no AsNoTracking. That's because Find first tries to find the requested entity in the (tracked!) context cache (the state manager). It goes to the database if it's not there, so for a subsequent second time Find it doesn't have to do this roundtrip again.
So, Find is all about tracked entities.
Use Single(OrDefault) (+ AsNoTracking) if you want to get one entity without tracking.

Change tracking with EF over time?

I'd like to know what is the best practice to track and/or persist changes over time if I use EF. I'd like to get started with EF for a new project. What I need is a kind of change history.
That's how I did it before: If a record was created it was saved with an ID and with the same ID as InvariantID. If the record was updated i marked it as deleted and created a new record with the new values and a new ID but the same InvariantID. Like this I always had my current record but a history of changes as well.
This works perfectly fine for my scenarios. The amount of historical records is not an issue because I use this usually only for data that's not changing very often.
Is this build in EF somehow or what's the best way to get this behavior for EF?
No it is not build into EF and it will not work this way. I even don't think that it is a good approach on the database level because it makes referential integrity very complex.
With EF this will work only if you use following approach:
You will use conditional mapping for your entity - condition will be IsDeleted = 0. It will ensure that only non deleted entities will be used in queries.
You will have mapped stored procedure for delete operation to correctly set IsDeleted = 1 instead of really deleting the record
You will have to manually call DeleteObject to delete your record and after that you will insert new record - the reason is that EF is not able to deal with scenario where entity change its PK value during update.
Your entities will not be able to participate in relations unless you manually rebuild referential integrity with some other stored procedure
You will need stored procedure to query historical (deleted) records

How can I update a single field from an entity with Entity Framework?

I need to load an object from the database, modify some of its fields and relations, and then I want to store a new value for only one field, without modifying the rest.
It would look something like this:
var thing = db.Things.First();
thing.Field1 = "asdas";
thing.Field2 = 23;
thing.OtherThings.Add(new OtherThing());
thing.FieldToUpdate = doSomething(thing);
db.SaveChanges();
But that would save all the changes, what I want is to only save FieldToUpdate...
I've looked around and all I've found is to use stored procedures, which seems like too much for something that looks so simple, besides I would have to make a different stored procedure for each time I need to do something like this...
My current solution is to open another context, load the thing again, update the FieldToUpdate and SaveChanges, but that's both inefficient and ugly.
If you want to do this with attached entity you have to update FieldToUpdate FIRST and call SaveChanges. Than you can update other fields and call SaveChanges again if needed. No other way with attached entity.
Other way you can try is to detach entity, modify what you want to (it will not track changes). Then attach entity back to context and call:
// I suppose that db is ObjectContext or inherited type
db.ObjectStateManager.GetObjectStateEntry(thing).SetModifiedProperty("FieldToUpdate");
Now only FieldToUpdate is tracked as changed.
The Entity Framework is smart enough to figure out what has changed and what hasn't and optimizes the SQL statement is uses accordingly. If you only change FieldToUpdate, then the SQL statement will only be an update on the single field, not on everything.
However, if you do change Field1 and Field2 from what they were originally, they will be persisted too, but ONLY if they changed. Otherwise, there's no need to tell the DB to change it to what it already is.
Entity framework does it this way because that's exactly what the developer wants 99.9% of the time. If you are going to use an entity object as an object that you want to move around and manipulate in ways other than treating it as a model of the database (like it should be), then you may want to consider creating another new wrapper class that lets you mess with all the data fields that you want (and have others that aren't in there), and then have the save method of it do the proper entity framework persistance, to keep things separate and clean.

"On duplicate key update" for core-data

I would like to know if there is some kind of similar functionality or way to preform an "on duplicate key update" function with core-data as there is with MySQL.
What I want to do is to save an object to the database every time a user presses a button. But if the button is already pressed I want to update the row with some new values instead of adding a new row.
The only way I currently know how to do this is to read the rows from the DB, see if the row exists and then update it.. otherwise add a new row. This seems kind of bad to do this way, am I wrong?
The easiest answer to this is to run a query against the Core Data context and get the object back if it exists. This is the most efficient and least error prone solution to the problem.
You do not need to create a separate NSManagedObjectContext and attempt to deal with merge policies, that is a very inefficient and dangerous way to try and resolve such a simple issue.
Core Data handles a lot of caching for you in the background. If you are attempting to retrieve an object that you just created there is a very high probability that it is still sitting in the cache so the response to your query will be nearly instantaneous.

I just went back to both of those sample projects again to file a bug against them and noticed that they have been updated and finally removed the suggestion of creating a new context. They are now using the NSUndoManager where appropriate and a single context.

Remember that the core data framework manages persistence of your object graph. It is not an interface to a sqlite database.
Worry about your object life cycle. When do instances get created? When are they destroyed? What makes your instances unique? Using Books as an example entity, a book has an ISBN which is a unique way of identifying a title, yet many copies of each title can exist. You have two choices in your Entity model, you can create separate instances for each copy of the title or have one instance with a count attribute.
The sample projects CoreDataBooks and iPhoneCoreDataRecipes use NSUndoManager to track state changes between views.

Entity Framework and Temporary Objects

I'm new to the Entity Framework and am currently experimenting with it. I created a simple database, set up the model in VS2008, and have got the code going to query the database using the EF as well as inserting new data.
There's one thing that has me a little confused though. I have an entity (set up in my model) called Customer, and as part of the logic of my application I want to be able to create a temporary Customer object for some intermediate processing. This particular object should never actually be stored in the database. However, I noticed that as soon as I call SaveChanges() the customer is saved to the database. This isn't what I want to happen. I'd be quite happy to call AddCustomer() on the objects I do want to include - I just want to have the option to create a temporary instance for my own use.
I did discover I could call Detach() and pass in my temporary instance, which would stop it from being persisted. However I'm not sure this is the best way to do this since the temporary Customer object will have related objects, and unless I go through and detach them all I might end up in hot water.
It's possible I'm misunderstanding something about how the EF is supposed to work, or that I'm missing something obvious - I'm hoping someone can set me straight!

If you want to have a temporary instance of an entity that'll never be connected to the EF again, use this Entity Cloner for cloning the entity
If you are trying to disconnect an entity, send it over the wire some where (let us say pass it over to the client over a service, to modify it, and then again get it back), and again merge back the changes to the EF - right now this is not directly supported. How ever, you can try these solutions
