After mild frustration with the difficulty to make top-level "plain old folders" within Eclipse for visual-organization purposes, I discovered that the thing I'm after is called a "working set". Hooray! But they don't seem to be rename-able, by any of the apparent avenues (right-clicking on it or using the Configure Working Sets window).
Is that just the way things are, since no one should be so lazy as to refuse making a new working set with the right name and transferring everything over? Or am I missing something obvious?
I also have a more minor question whose answer I already think I know. Can I tell a specific working set not to change its icon to have the "red X" when one of its children has an error? Nothing in the preferences under Debugging suggests to me the ability to turn off the automatic icon-changing. It's a useful feature, but I have a few simple practice projects with very basic errors, and I don't need the visual reminder to "fix" them, especially if they're in my "Practice" working set, whose icon I'd prefer not to change.
To rename a Working Set, you need to get to the dialogue of selecting a Working Set (click on the white down arrow at the top right of the package explorer > Configure Working Sets..), focus on your Working Set and click the "Edit" button. There, you can change the Working Set's name, as well as what's actually included in the Working Set.
There is no way (that I know of) to change the icon display to avoid showing the errors marker.

I just set up Eclipse for PHP Developers on a new machine, and now I have a problem I haven't experienced before.
Normally, I keep track of short-term work that I want to do by adding TODOs in comments on a file. These show up on the right side of the editing window as little blue rectangles. This helps me find the next thing I need to work on.
That part is working, but when I remove the comment the blue rectangles aren't going away. I have used Eclipse for years and never had this problem before.
Anyone know why this isn't working?
For tasks added in the source file's syntax, you often need to Clean and Build the project again to reprocess the file (those are handled in the relevant compiler). For ones that don't get "compiled", check the General->Editors->Structured Text Editors->Task Tags page and have it try to redetect them from there.
I'm using IntelliJ 13 and the Scala plugin. In one project if I make an obvious type error I get a visual indication, like this:
But I just started a new project and a similar thing is not highlighted, even after I compile.
I'm giving a presentation on some Scala code and I'd like it if the type errors highlighted like in the first one, but I have no idea where the setting is.
One reason could be that the level of highlighting is set to a lower setting. Check your lower right corner for a button which adjusts this setting with a slider. It looks like (at least to me) a policeman face :)
Another thing is that you might not have declared what additional languages you're using besides the primary one. You can configure this in the project settings.
Also if you are using a tool to build a project (like Maven for example) try rebuilding or reimporting your project.
edit: One last thing. Make sure IDEA isn'currently reindexing or running some background tasks, this really messes up code correction.
I've customized the perspectives I use often in Eclipse pretty thoroughly. Sometimes, however, I accidentally close a window and I need to reopen it. However, when I do, all the selected columns reset to the defaults.
The easiest way to reproduce this, is in Java mode (or any mode, I suppose):
Choose upside-down triangle in the Tasks view
Click configure columns
Remove a column, such as "Completion".
Window -> Save Perspective as... It will say "do you wish to overwrite Java"?
Choose yes, because the changes don't actually save anyway
Window -> New Window
And you will see, in the new Window, the removed column has returned!
Is there a way to make this change permanent? I tried looking through the files in /.metadata/.plugins/.org.eclipse.core.runtime/.settings but as I didn't know what I was looking for, I didn't know what to change. I also tried File->Export->General->Preferences, but the Tasks settings file created there had no mention of columns. I also tried the advice in this thread but none of it was helpful really. Does this feature exist?

When working with MVC in Eclipse you might often have a model, view, and controller all with the same name open at the same time. When looking at each of the file tabs, you won't always know which is which and have to click through them, which can be quite a hassle sometimes. I've heard of being able to color code files based on the path in some editors. For example, tabs with path model could be set as green, path controller set as yellow, etc. Is this possible in Eclipse, or is there a plugin for something like this? If not, what do you do to more easily differentiate between the tabs? I've heard of people always opening a MVC set in a certain order. So you'll know the leftmost tab is the controller, the right most is the view, etc. However, that must also mean you need to open all 3 files each time. Any better tips or tricks?
Another thing about the file tabs that can be annoying is that when you have more files that can't fit in one line, eclipse pushes off to an arrow which you have to click to see the rest. It seems to be random which tabs get pushed off there, maybe the least used ones, I have no idea... This coupled with the problem above gets kind of annoying. I was trying to find a way to disable this and just show tabs that can't fit in one line to show up on a second line, but surprisingly couldn't find such an option (then again you also can't wordwrap without a plugin).

With the latest version of Eclipse (Kepler 4.3.1, build M20130911-1000) when two or more files with the same base name are opened, tab will show also the parent directory name.
At a break point my Eclipse used to show me the value of a hovered variable, now it only shows the type name.
How can I turn that back on?
Go to the preferences and type "Hovers" in the search box at the top. Make sure the Combined one is checked. Though I have found that even if they are set correctly sometimes (in the case of certain fields) it shows only the type, not sure why that's the case. You might want to ask about that in the Eclipse JDT newsgroup.
Seems like Ubuntu can intercept some of the Special Key presses.
