In troubleshooting a problem, I think the core of my misunderstanding relates to how mro.pm works -- especially with regard to set_subname.
What is the difference between these three constructs,

Obviously, the first version works (it's from the code I linked), the question is why are the other two variants giving me different errors (especially the second variant) and what's happening there -- why don't they work?
Your second option is not working because the sub you are using as a wrapper does not match the prototype of the inner sub. monkey_patch is not only used for methods, and this changes how some functions are parsed. In particular, Mojo::Util::steady_time has an empty prototype and is often called without using parenthesis.

The third construct is not working because you are using goto to remove the renamed wrapper sub from the call stack, leaving only the inner sub which has no name. This breaks next::method's ability to find the correct method name.
That is indeed complicated, but maybe you overcomplicated it?
Remember that MRO is only concerned with locating a method, which is just a symbol table entry to a coderef, through a defined order of package names. The internal subname only has to do with what caller() reports AFAIK.

Edit After Seeing Error Messages:
The subroutines have not been validly installed. I suspect that since in option 2 and 3 you are deferring the calls to set_subname() to call time, the coderef $patch{$k} never has a subname assigned to it and that breaks a link in the chain of mro::_nextcan()'s XS magic. Particularly if $patch{$k} calls next::method. The closures seem to be valid though.
Although I must say my testing seems to show that option 2 is valid.

I am trying to write a small script that can comment on github PRs using eslint output.
The problem is eslint gives me the absolute line numbers for each error.
But github API wants the line number relative to the diff.

To comment on a specific line in a file, you will need to first
determine the position in the diff. GitHub offers a
application/vnd.github.v3.diff media type which you can use in a
preceding request to view the pull request's diff. The diff needs to
be interpreted to translate from the line in the file to a position in
the diff. The position value is the number of lines down from the
first "##" hunk header in the file you would like to comment on.
The line just below the "##" line is position 1, the next line is
position 2, and so on. The position in the file's diff continues to
increase through lines of whitespace and additional hunks until a new
file is reached.
So if I want to add a comment on new line number 5 in the above image, then I would need to pass 12 to the API
My question is how can I easily map between the new line numbers which the eslint will give in it's error messages to the relative line numbers required by the github API

I am thinking of the following algorithm
make an array of new line numbers starting from NEW_STARTING_LINE_NUMBER to
NEW_STARTING_LINE_NUMBER+NEW_TOTAL_LINESfor each file
subtract newStart from each number and make it another array relativeLineNumbers
traverse through the array and for each deleted line (type==='del') increment the corresponding remaining relativeLineNumbers
for another hunk (line having ##) decrement the corresponding remaining relativeLineNumbers
I have found a solution. I didn't put it here because it involves simple looping and nothing special. But anyway answering now to help others.

Now you can use the relative line number to post a comment using github api.
For my purpose I only needed the relative line numbers for the newly added lines, but using the table above one can get it for deleted lines also.

Problem is that when i try prepend some characters before error keyword
for example

This indentation is prepended before the comment and not behind it. This results into improper formatting in case of single line comment before the 'error' keyword.

I assume you're creating an indentation-sensitive language, because you're explicitly calling BEGIN and END.
For indentation-sensitive language my answer is: You'll want to overwrite
org.eclipse.xtext.formatting2.internal.HiddenRegionReplacer.applyHiddenRegionFormatting(List<ITextReplacer>)
The methods append[] and prepend[] you're using are agnostic to comments and at a later time applyHiddenRegionFormatting() is called to decide how that formatting is weaved between comments.
To make Xtext use your own subclass of HiddenRegionReplacer, overwrite

There is lots of juicy data in those HASH, SCALAR, GLOB, and other elements that I want to get logged; as we are having trouble logging the original request in case it doesn't match.
I've explored using
Some leads that I don't know how to use are using Log::Dispatch, or some sort of Filter on Log::Report; but in the end, all I really want is to apply Data::Dumper to those elements.
