I have developed an add-in (xlam) for Excel 2013 (some users have 2010) that contains half a dozen macros.
I used to load it from UNC path on the server and that worked great, but every time I need to update it, all the users have to quit excel because it's locked. There are now too many users in multiple buildings, so this is approach is no longer viable. I need to find a way to deploy new version of the macro-enabled workbook and the add-in, so that it works on local PC's.
We use Microsoft SCCM at work, so I figured, no problems, I'll just deploy the add-in to the users' local add-in directory (%APPDATA%/Microst/Addins). This works fine. The problem is when I send them an updated version of the macro enabled worksheet that uses the add-in (which changes fairly frequently), %appdata% has been expanded to my user name and of course the path to the add-in is not valid on someone else's machine.
I figured, no problems, I'll make a common dir on everyone's machine (C:\Program Files\CompanyName\Addins) and install the add-in there, so that the path is valid on all machines. I open my workbook, load the add-in and test it. Works great.
I have a DisplayVersions macro that shows the correct version and the path I just loaded the addin from (C:\Program Files\CompanyName\Addins) as the Addin path.
I save the worksheet, quit Excel. Next time I open it, it's trying to load it from my %appdata%/Microsoft/Addins directory and of course it doesn't exist there. It never asked me if I wanted to copy it there.
This is driving me mad. There HAS to be a way to deploy an add-in and a worksheet, so it will work from all local PC's
Anyone got any suggestions
Regards
Mark

I'm struggling to find any method that works with current Unity.
This for a conventional Windows build (not a Windows Universal via VS).
So, there's the separate data, dll, etc files of a build: how to create a civilian-usable "single exe" for Windows, with current Unity??
As said afaik this was actually always the case.
See e.g. Windows standalone Player build binaries to see a list of resulting output of a build. It exists back until version 2017.2.
So the short answer is:
It is how it is. You will always get multiple files and the data folder as output.
What you can do however is using a pack tool which simply packs all your folder content into one single exe file.
One example is Appacker
=>
BUT unfortunately there is one known issue: Windows Defender recognizes it and every exe created with it as malware. The reason for that is actually mentioned by the author in the link
Spoiler: A self-extracting .exe file? Windows Defender hates that trick!
So either with this tool or any similar one there is no real way around that except you need to trust the tool and your users need to trust you ^^
(The icon is also only used for the process window, not for the exe file itself ^^)
The long and correct way would probably be to create an actual installer for your final app which is then allowed to extract all the files to a certain location.
So in the end the user anyway will again have an exe and according data and dll files e.g. in the Programs folder but get a registered shortcut to the Start Menu which is just how any other application on Windows usually works like.
Just to add to the answer.
In 2020 if it's a game you should just use Steam. Making auto-update way easier for your users.

I recently opted to start using Visual Studio Code. I want to connect to a remote server and edit files directly on the server. FTP-Simple seems like a great solution. But I am having a hard time understanding some basics about the program.
If I make a connection to a server, does FTP-Simple download all the actual files to my hard drive?
Also, I was able to make a connection, but in one of the directories there should be a sub-directory and it's missing. What am I doing wrong?
Can someone point me to some good documentation for this extension such as video(s), etc.
If I make a connection to a server, does FTP-Simple download all the
actual files to my hard drive?
Yes, It download all to your hard drive. you can find an address like below:
C:\Users\your user name\AppData\Roaming\Code\User\ftp-simple\remote-workspace-temp\cbc1ad9ed60f12ec861052806d7833db\httpdocs
for opening a directory in VSCode you can press F1 type ftp-config then click ftp-config:Open
and click on target directory you want to open for more information use this
2 years later and I'm having the same problem. I have already uninstalled ftp simple as well as VSC with no effect.
The plugin just doesn't download all the files on the FTP. It worked the first time I installed it for 2-3 weeks and then suddenly stopped being in sync with the FTP server.
There is a folder called "code" on mac in Library/Application Support where most of VSC data is saved, but deleting this didn't have an effect either. Perhaps it works for someone else, as this is apparently necessary to fully deinstall VSC.
I'd pay for good plugin that just allows to work remotely on ftp files!!
It is a habit that I have for editing files online . As far as I have many working websites and I don't want to backup all the files located on them but only those that I have edited through FTP client software .
What is the best way to have a version tracker for files ? Something like Github
I am not cool with editing files (websites) on localhost and move them to online mode. I am looking for a way to synchronize both local and web files in order to have the latest version of special files.
What about trying something like WinSCP or setting up XAMPP and working locally pushing to bitbuckket or github then once done working uploading all the files through FTP. WinSCP is for windows and allows you to edit the files without having to download them, edit them, reupload them. It allows you to edit them while they are live. However, XAMPP way is a better way to go if you plan to work on other peoples websites at any point in time.
I'm trying to setup Microsoft reporting on a shared hosted server. I've set up the web.config files with the necessary entries and uploaded the assemblies Microsoft.ReportViewer.Common.dll and Microsoft.ReportViewer.WebForms.dll as well as the file Microsoft.ReportViewer.xml via FTP.
The site loads OK, but when I try to load a report a get a missing reference to Microsoft.ReportViewer.ProcessingObjectModel.dll. If I can get a hold of a copy of this dll, can I expect the report view to work? If so, what's the best way to get a copy? Or should I start trying to cajole the server administrator to run ReportViewer.exe?
This project is using Visual Studio 2008.
It appears that the answer is yes. I had never extracted a file from the GAC before, but it was pretty easy by following the command line method described in this question. Once the correct version of Microsoft.ReportViewer.ProcessingObjectModel.dll was extracted from the GAC on my development machine and uploaded to the site, the reports started working.
I've written an HTA file frontend for our web app that allows the web app to run without web browser status bars etc, and allows it to access the local system for certain tasks.
I need a way to deploy this to customers. I need an installer to supply an hta file, an ico file, and add a link to them in the start menu and on the users desktop. I looked at building an installer with NSIS, but I couldn't figure out how to assign the icon to the shortcuts - The icon had to be a standard HTA one.
Can this be done with NSIS, or should I be using another installer?
P.s. I've got no particular preference for NSIS, it's just something I once used a very long time ago. When I download stuff, I think I prefer them to be msi files that launch with windows installer (it feels more like downloading a .rpm or .deb on linux which I am used to) but I know nothing about how those are created. I'm a web/linux guy who knows very little about windows programming.
Check out the NSIS Scripting Reference for CreateShortcut. You should be able to do something like this:
SetOutPath $DESKTOP
CreateShortcut "$DESKTOP\MyShortcut.lnk" "$INSTDIR\MyHTAFile.hta" "" "$INSTDIR\MyIconFile.ico"
