Download sourcecode/javadoc automatically for Maven projects on Spring Tool Suite - eclipse

I'm using Spring Tool Suite in my organization for writing Java code. We have a bunch of Maven projects. Whenever I do an F3(Open declaration) on a library's method, the class file opens up and then STS automatically starts downloading the source code and in a few seconds I see the source code in the editor. How does this happen? I've been trying to replicate this on my home machine to no avail. I looked at other similar posts, the usual suggestions are -

Update Maven settings file to instruct Maven to download source/javadoc
None of these are done in my project. So, is there any other way to do it? We are using artifactory as remote repository, if that helps.

How do I automatically run a Maven configuration when I save a Java file in Eclipse?

I’m using Eclipse Mars on Mac El Capitan. I have a multi-module Maven project, where each module is loaded into Eclipse as a Maven-Eclipse project. My question is, if I change a Java file and save it, how do I then automatically launch an action in Eclipse that will run a Maven goal? My objective is to run a certain Maven configuration (mvn —file ../pom.xml clean package -DskipTests) every time I make a Java change.
Note that I do have the Project -> Build Automatically checked but I don’t think this has any tie in to Maven.

This plug-in listen for save action. If a save event is fired in the workspace, the plug-in search for a configuration file in each project. If found it will execute the specified java class or external program. The code is allowed to modify project files too. Useful to trigger some command on save, like code generation, resource sync, enhancement, deploy and so on.

Not able to understand How maven works with Spring MVC

I made a Hello word example in springMVC.Following are my steps.
1.Installed maven-eclipse integeration in eclipse.
2.Download maven and set environment variables,JAVA_HOME etc.
3.Check to see if maven is running via cmd and it is.
4.Create new maven project and in pom.xml,set spring core,web,web-mvc dependencies.
5.Create new Dynamic web project and under its properties->Deployment assembly I have added maven project.
6.Added spring jars core,mvc,web,context etc in dynamic web project lib folder.
It's all working now but I am not able to understand the working.
Before,I was trying to make it work without maven by copy and paste jars into lib,classpath,by makiing user library and adding jars to it and then add it to current project but every time it was giving some error.Sometimes it was classnotfound,sometimes it was context related.
Finally i tried this maven thing by searching some online tutorials and it works now.
But I am not able get it.Can anybody explain me in detail that how those spring jars getting picked during development and deployment.What exactly is maven doing that I was not doing before.I am in the state of total confusion.I know the flow of my mvc project(controllers,views etc.).
Maven searches the libraries (they are also called artifacts in the Maven language) in repositories. In the Maven Central Repository many libraries are hosted - http://search.maven.org/. After Maven finds the libraries in a repository, it caches them in your local repository. It is in ${userDir}/.m2 The next time, Maven will look in your local repository, instead of downloading again from the Central Repository.
P.S You can specify many other repositories different than the Central Repository. This is done in the <repositories> tag in your pom.xml. The Central Repository is always searched by default.
if you don't want use maven you have change your project setup. remove the pom.xml and copy all needed jar into the webapp/WEB-INF/libs folder.
Copy the jar from the a maven build(target folder). in this case you have all together without grabbing them one by one over then.

Automating build tasks using eclipse / maven m2e

I am about to use maven to automate my builds. Unfortunately, I am not able to get all the features I want, even after reading several tutorials :(
I would be glad if somebody could explain a way I can achieve all my goals!
I want to automate 3 specific build tasks with several actions for a project from within eclipse, using m2e:
Build snapshot
compile
define current project version + date as version
build jar file
copy jar file into the local repository in the project path itself (§{project}/builds/)
Debug snapshot
build snapshot as mentioned above
copy jar file to plugins folder of a local test server
build another project the current project depends on, copy its jar file to the plugins folder aswell
launch server / connect to eclipse debugger (I know how to do that, the previous steps are the important ones)
Create release
compile
define current project version as version
build jar file
copy jar file into the local repository in the project path itself
create javadoc
copy source files and javadoc to an archive folder
increase the project version (for example v6 -> v7)
As mentioned I don't need a perfect solution, just a way to realize this ;)
(Annotation: Chaining multiple launch configurations is not a problem.)

Hi based on your requirements i can say the following:
Build Snapshots
Building a SNAPSHOT is usually the convention during development cycle.
1.1 just using the conventions.
1.2 Date as version
This is a bad idea, cause Maven has some conventions how a version looks like (1.0-SNAPSHOT or 1.2.3-SNAPSHOT etc.)
1.3 Build jar file
Usually done by the jar life cycle (mvn package)
1.4 The local repository is on your home drive in ${HOME}/.m2/repository for all your projects. Technically you can do what you like but it's against the Maven conventions. The question is why do you need such thing?
2.1 Usual procedure
2.2 Usually a deployment is not a job for Maven but you can do such things by using cargo-maven-plugin (integration testing).
2.3 If you have dependencies between project you need CI solution like Jenkins to do such things otherwise you need to do this manually. But that is different from a multi-module build.
2.4 Integration testing different story. Depends on what exactly you like to do.

The maven-release-plugin will handle such things except copying to the project path itself which is against the conventions. For such purposes you need a repository manager.

Grails Project - Common Java Project Dependency in Eclipse

All,
We have standard java projects that contain our common data model, common util classes, etc...
What I can’t seem to figure out is how, to make my Grails project (in Eclipse) have a dependency on the other standard (non Grails) java project in the workspace. When I add the project in the “Java Build Path” the project doesn’t show any compiler errors, but it when I run “Grails Tools -> Refresh Dependencies” or attempt to run the project (run-app) it fails.
This seems like it would be a pretty common thing, but I have searched all over the web and have been unable to find a solution. We are not using maven in our environment. Since we build Eclipse RCP applications on the client side, we use OSGI manifests to manage our project / bundle dependencies.
You can use linked source directories to include the Java or Groovy dependencies in the grails project and you need to set the output directory to Project/target/classes (these configurations go into the grails project preferences in Java Build Path options -> Source Tab).
The change in the output directory allows Eclipse to detect changes in the dependencies and auto load it when running the app using grails run-app.
You can use autocomplete and debug the sources of the dependencies with this configuration.

You can add this to your BuildConfig.groovy:
grails.compiler.dependencies = {
fileset (dir:"/path/to/jars")
}
That should get you started.
If the dependencies are not stored in an Ivy/Maven repository then AFAIK your only option is to copy the dependencies to the lib directory of the Grails project.

How to get peer project source in eclipse and maven

creating a parent project with only a pom.xml, and lots of sub projects such as:
my-web
my-core
my-backoffice
etc. is easy, and the sonotype eclipse plugin does most of the work.
However, getting one project to know about the source in the other project seems to be hard. E.g. when you are debugging the my-web project, and step into my-core, eclipse doesnt know where to get the source.
Looking in the Java Build Path in eclipse, the maven plugin has added my-core as a folder under "Web App Libraries". I.e. its not using the my-core-0.0.1.SNAPSHOT.jar or similar, its using the raw java files. Great!
But how to tell maven to tell eclipse to look for the source in the same place?
Im not really sure where to start. Im guessing its possible to get maven to put the source in a special jar using the maven-soure-plugin, but this will usually be out of sync with the actual java files which the web project seems to be using directly.
A quick and dirty solution is to manually Edit the Java Build Path for each project, and add my-core and other dependant projects in the "Projects" tab. Is this best practice? Any other suggestions?

If this doesn't happen automatically you have a configuration problem.
My Guess would be that you have a version mismatch between the pom dependencies and the actual project versions. Or your projects have an unusual name template (m2eclipse resolves projects by their artifactId AFAIK)
Either way, what always helps is in your Debug configuration (Run > Debug Configurations ...) select the Source tab and just Add... the selected projects.
