I have a UITableView which has a navigation bar that can seque to a View Controller of my app via a UINagivationController. The Table View is editable, where I can delete a cell.
I have found what I think is a bug. When I swipe from left to right the tableview goes away to reveal the view Controller. However, if I only half commit to the swipe and only go 3/4 of the way (not fully going to the View Controller) and return back to the Table View, the navigation bar is removed. I have programmatically removed the navigation bar of the view controller, but I have not removed it from Table View Controller. It is incredibly important for my table view to have the navigation bar, as it is the only way that I can return to the view controller (once the navigation bar is gone, it no longer allows for me to segue back to the View Controller by using the left to right swipe for some reason).
Has anyone seen this problem? Is there code that I need to add to ensure that the Navigation bar does not disappear?
I solved this problem by removing the ability of the pop gesture recogniser using this code in the viewDidLoad( ): self.navigationController?.interactivePopGestureRecognizer?.enabled = false

as you can see from the picture i have added, my navigation bar is displaying at the bottom of the screen under my table view. I have just dragged and dropped my navigation bar on to that view controller which means i'm not using a navigation controller. I don't understand why this is happening and i'm sure its a simple fix which i am missing.

Any help is much appreciated, Thanks!
Delete your old navigation bar
Select your TableViewController and on top click editor->Embed in-> Navigation Controller
Now you should have a navigation bar on top.
See screenshot. You dragged a navigation bar into your table. To achieve the behavior you want you can embed your view controller inside a UINavigationController and access your navigation bar via self.navigationController.navigationBar.
I got your problem
What you have done is you have taken your navigation bar inside tableview...
that is the problem..
you just dragged that navigation bar outside that tableview...and that's it..
I have 3 View controllers in a tab bar. (my 3 icon). I have another view controller that is accessible from one of the 3 via a button. I do not want this extra view controller to show on the tab bar though.
On clicking the button with a push segue nothing happens, with a modal segue it opens the new page, but the tab bar disappears. (Even though I created a relationship from this new view controller to the tab bar).
How do I get the tab bar to remain? I don't really want to set up a navigation controller between my one view and the other (not on the tab bar) because it's not really hierarchal content.
Is modal actually the right segue to use?
Does your views (the views of the 3 views controller) contain the tab bar? If not, you may try transiting from the view to the view of the extra view controller.
see +[UIView transitionFromView:toView:duration:options:completion:]
When you select a Modal segue, the new view is not added as part of the current TabController stack. That's why the tab bar is not visible when you go to this view, and it's why a Push segue does not work for you (you can't push a VC that's not part of the stack).
From the sounds of it, if you want the tab bar to remain visible/useful but don't want to add this VC to the tab bar, what you're really saying is that this VC is a sub-view of one of the original 3 VCs in the tab bar.
In which case you could manage instantiation of your "custom" VC from within one of these original VC's, and add it as a sub-view?
For example if you've got: Tab1, Tab2, Tab3 and ExtraView
in Tab2 VC you would init/alloc SubView and do: [self addSubView:ExtraView.view];
Unfortunately, of course this way you lose Segues, but unless you want to go ahead and set up Tab2 as nested NavigationController in Storyboard, I think that's your best bet.
I have an iphone app consisting of a tabbar controller in the main.xib, where the tab bar controller contains navigation controllers, which are associated with corresponding view controllers. I assume this is pretty standard.
If I present a modal view controllers view from a navigation controller contained in this hierarchy, the view owned by this view controller pops up as you would expect. However, Ive noticed if I have controls (such as a button) at the very bottom of this 'modally presented' view it is rarely detecting taps. It seems as though the tabset underneath is blocking the touches. Note that when I present the modal view controllers view it fills the visible screen, it isn't sliding up from underneath the tab set.
I thought this tababar controller->navigation controller hierarchy was pretty standard, shouldn't I be able to present a modal view controller from a navigation controller in this set up without issue? I have also tried to present the modal view controller from the tab bar controller, with the same effect.
How do I present a modal view controller in an app with the tabbar controller->navigation controller hierarchy such that the lowest portion of that view can detect touches?
thanks for any help!
Check out the first answer by Harry, I believe this set-up is related to your situation. Post an update and let us know if this helps: UIView doesn't resize to full screen when hiding the nav bar & tab bar
Also, what code are you using to present the modal view?
I'm trying to add a view that is a form that has 3 elements. These elements will be inside of a static grouped table. I need a navigation bar at the top with a "Save" and "Cancel" button. Both buttons should send the user back to their previous screen when tapped.
Within the storyboard, I have tried creating a Navigation Controller and then adding a table to it, but I get the error of "Static table view are only valid when embedded in UITableViewController".
So, I tried creating a Table View Controller, but the storyboard won't let me put a navigation bar into one of those for some reason...
What is the best way to go about doing this?
Add UITableViewController to your storyboard and then choose Editor > Embed in > Navigation Bar Controller from the menu. This will wrap your table view controller in a nav bar controller and you can then add your Save and Cancel buttons to the navigation bar.
It might seem a bit wasteful to create a navigation controller with only a single sub-controller just to get a navigation bar but it's the accepted way of doing it.
Oh... this iOS stuff is hurting my head.
I wanted to do the same thing, have a TableView, with a Navigation Bar at the top, but there was no "Embed in.. Navigation Bar" menu item, just "Embed in.. Navigation Controller".
Eventually, solving this was easier than I thought.
I just needed to add a Table View Controller to my storyboard, then CTRL+drag a Segue from the "calling" view controller to my new Table View Controller, and, voila, it gives me the Navigation Bar straightaway.
I have implemented the search bar for the table in the first tab and this works fine and filters fine, however, with the same code and the xib linked up all the same etc on the second tab it no longer displays the search bar. Is there a simple reason to this?
Separate out the UISearchBar into its own class and then call it from the multiple views. It is not meant to be reinstantiated for each view controller.
Yes, there is a simple reason—the search bar is a subview of your main view, so when that view gets swiped off screen, it disappears with that view. To fix this, you'll have to add the search bar to the view that holds your tab bar controller—you'll probably have to put it in MainWindow.xib. You can still connect it to your tab bar controller if you need to—just add a reference to in the XIB.
