localhost eclipse 404 tomcat 8 - eclipse

I just installed Eclipse and Tomcat 8 to work on a shared project, that I got from bitbucket/sourcetree.
But when I add the project to the Tomcat 8 server, I get 404 status.
I tried creating a new dynamic web project and made a test.html in WebContent, added it to the server and it worked.
What can be the reason that one projects works in my server, but the other one does not?

Check the shared project Targeted Runtimes. It could be set to another version of Tomcat.
Project -> Properties-> Targeted Runtimes

Glassfish server can not run html page in Eclipse

My ubuntu crashed and I started to setup all the development environment again.I imported my project from github. Adjusted project facets from Eclipse project properties to Dynamic Web module 3.0, Glassfish web extensions 3.1, Java, Javascript and JPA 2.0. My glassfish server 3.1 is started and running.localhost:8080 shows the server is running. My project is also added to server configuration. When I right click one of html pages and select run as -> run on server nothing happens. No error message or non started html page in the browser.
What could be the problem? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
I started a new dynamic web project with same project facet details and noticed glassfish-web.xml file under web content -> web-inf
In my previous project I had sun-web.xml and web.xml files and after copying the glassfish-web.xml file under same folder html page started to opened with browser.

Ejb with NetBeans

I am very new in Ejb and with very few knowledge about it. I have download NetBeans (7.01) and GlassFish and run a sample program. But, as I have no idea about Ejb, I can't understand how to run this program on NetBeans. Can anybody help me by giving steps how to run this program. Thanks in advance.
NetBeans installs on default GlassFish web application server, which deploys your enterprise projects. To ensure that server is registered in the IDE, go to Services -> Servers inlay and look for "GlassFish Server 3.x". If you found it, open projects properties inlay: right click on your enterprise project -> Properties -> Run and make sure, that "Server" is set to "GlassFish Server 3.x". Then you can deploy you enterprise application: right click on project -> Deploy. IDE should start application server and deploy your application. To run your deployed project right click -> Run or type in the browser address, given in your tutorial, which is mapped to your resource (e.g. http://localhost:8080/book). In this way GlassFish doesn't require additional settings files except persistence.xml in your ejb project and web.xml in the web project.
In case you don't have GlassFish server installed, you can download it here. Make sure you don't have it already installed separately from NetBeans.
If you want to deploy your app on JBoss application server (instead of GlassFish), you should first download it from official site and install. After you've done it, you can set it as server in NetBeans: Services -> Servers -> Add server. Then you can deploy your project as was described above.

eclipse requested resource not available

I have run a j2ee application in tomcat/eclipse for several months now, but suddenly (after working with changed in the css files), I get the server error:
The requested resource /appname/ is not available. I'm totally lost. I've gone through a number of posts. This one describes my problem: Eclipse is not detecting servlet libraries, but I've gone through everything in that post without finding any missing jars or servers or anything in my project.
I'm running Eclipse Java EE IDE for Web Developers.
Version: Helios Service Release 1.
Project -> Properties -> Server shows Tomcat v6.0 Server at localhost
Project -> Build path, please see attached screen dump.
Project -> Project Facets: Dynamic Web Module 2.5 and Java 1.6 is checked.
I have tried to clean and rebuild the project.
I'm running over https so I'm connecting to https://localhost:8443/appname/Start. I'm not sure if that could be the problem, but it has worked ok until now.
Can anyone give me a hint what can be wrong?
Finally got it working again, but I honestly don't know exactly what fixed it.
I started with removing some servlets/servlet mappings from the web.xml file. After having done that change, when restarting the server, the Start servlet was found, but the jsp that the servlet was forwaring to was not (and the url to the jsp page looked strange). Also the logcat property file was not found. I read in another post that the Server might need to be cleaned so I did that and then cleaned the project once again. Then restarted the Server and now it's the application is running again.
Thanks for your help anyway, Andrei.
try cleaning your tomcat from eclipse:
right click in tomcat > clean.
then restart your server

deploying a war file in WTP(Eclipse) tomcat server

I have a maven build Java project.
My war file name is: test-1.0-SNAPSHOT.war
I am using M2E plugin in Eclipse.
I have run target mvn package.
Added server as tomcat version 7 in eclipse indigo 3.7. Server started. But my war file didn't deployed in the server.
I have tried by right clicking tomcat server and Add remove..., it says "there is no resources that can be added or removed from the server".
How can i deploy my war file in the eclipse WTP tomcat server?. Do i need to run any maven target?
Make sure that you have "Maven Integration for WTP" installed in your Eclipse instance.
First check if it's available through
Window->Preferences->Maven->Discovery->Open Catalog
If for whatever reason this does not work, you can get WTP integration from this update site (that's the version I am currently using):
https://repository.sonatype.org/content/repositories/forge-sites/m2eclipse-wtp/0.13.0/S/0.13.0.20110623-0455
This integration does a lifecycle mapping of maven-war-plugin into m2e architecture.
Once you've installed the WTP integration, you must restart eclipse and once it's restarted, right click on your web app project and choose: Maven->Update Project Configuration...
Also, I would advise to run a clean build at this time.
Last, but not least, delete and recreate your Tomcat server configuration (I don't know why, but I had to do it quite a few times when I switched to m2e).
I think eclipse is not recognizing your project as a web app, To confirm this
Open to do open J2ee perspective on your eclipse, If you open the project folder of your app, You should see (Deployment Descriptor)
If you don't see it, your app is not web app as far as eclipse is concerned
I have see this in case if you imported/created a maven command line project
To fix this
Select Project ==> Properties ==> Project Facets ==> make sure Dynamic Web Module check box is checked
If you do that the local tomcat server will add your app when do add remove projects
I think eclipse is not recognizing your project as web app, convert your project into web app by command mvn eclipse:eclipse -Dwtpversion=2.0 and try to deploy in Eclipse configured tomcat,it will work.
If you have Eclipse 3.5 or above you should ensure that you have both the m2eclipse (m2e for 3.7) plugin installed and its WTP add-on. With these you shouldn't need to change your configuration by hand.
Did you try to build your project from the command line and deploy it in Tomcat by hand?
By the way, have you read this wiki post? It's a bit old, but it may still be relevant.
Adding 2 cents to Prasanna wonderful solution.
I realized that building maven war files "mvn package" was just creating .war file but eclipse was not picking up that war but was deploying its some internal version of it's app war.
I found that server > Browse Deployment Location.. in Eclipse server view .. it was taking to some abstract location like "C:\Programs\workspaceSTS.metadata.plugins\org.eclipse.wst.server.core\tmp1\wtpwebapps"
Where I could see my exploded app deployed but it was not having any /classes folder just limited files.
Using Prasanna's method I realized that eclipse now was deploying full exploded .war now.
So this was happening coz changing the facets to Dynamic Web Module has actually populated "R-click project > Properties > Deployment Assembly "
This Web Deployment Assembly window only tells eclipse what to deploy and what not. So even if your project is NOT setup as Dynamic Web Module , and still if you configure "Web Deployment Assembly" values properly , eclipse will deploy the app fine to Tomcat/ Server.

How to redeploy the web app using the Eclipse IDE

Im new to Eclipse. I use Tomcat as my run time server, but every time I modified the jsp pages, Eclipse was still displaying the older one. Just wondering how to redeploy the application so the changes can be reflected.
Eclipse: Eclipse IDE for Java EE Developers 1.2.1.20090918-0703
Tomcat: Tomcat 6.0
Thanks
Doubleclick the server instance in question in the Servers view to open its configuration. Now, in the right top you should see a section called Publishing. Open it to verify and configure autopublishing settings.
Eclipse should do that automatically for you.
Otherwise, on the Servers view (Menu Window->Show View->Servers), you can right click on your Tomcat instance and hit "Publish" or "Restart"
Make sure you have the "JST Server Adapters" ("Web, XML and Java EE Development category") feature installed.
Eclipse's publishing functionality requries the project to be a "web project", and in some cases requires additional configurations.
Go to Windows > Preferences > Server > Runtime environments and add your tomcat
Either try using publishing, or (better I think) use the FileSync plugin. There you can tell which folders from your project should be copied (live) to what directory on your machine (the tomcat/webapps/yourapp). With a little more effort the filesync configuration can be made machine independent (only using one parameter as TOMCAT_ROOT), in case you want to check-in the project to a repository where others will use it.
Get the Tomcat plugin. It was nice because you can install Tomcat on your system and then associate your web app with that instance of Tomcat. The plugin will let you stop/start Tomcat and define a server such that when you do a build it knows how to deploy the changes. There may be some newer plugin but the Tomcat plugin worked for me and was fairly simple to install and use. Here is a page from IBM on using Eclipse and Tomcat. Inside that page it points you to the following: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/opensource/library/os-eclipse-tomcat/
