I've been searching the net on how to setup the Facebook webhooks to check a particular Facebook page (I'm a content editor of) for certain updates.
I read the docs many times about setting up the callback URL whenever a particular "event" happens on that Facebook page, but I never read a straight answer on how to tell which page I want to monitor in.
I was pointed to the {app-id}/subscriptions endpoint, but it doesn't seem to be the one I need.
Could someone provide an idea on how this works?
You need to make a request to /{page_id}/subscribed_apps to create a subscription for updates from a page.
This call needs a page access token, so you need to request manage_pages permission first from an admin of the page. (Not sure if “content editor” role is sufficient for that.)

I have a task to add links to a web page to enable the user to post a short message to Facebook. There may be multiple messages on the page, each with its own link. The intent is to launch a Facebook share dialog pre-populated with the text of the message which the user can then modify, accept and/or reject.
I'm pretty new to programming anything for Facebook. I'm fairly confused and am not sure what to ask first, so I'll go with a very basic question: what's the simplest way to do this? I gather from Facebook's documentation that I probably have to use the Javascript SDK and/or the Open Graph technology. Is this correct, or is there another option I'm missing? Is there a really clear example of this kind of solution anywhere?
Thanks!
You have to create a facebook app first so you have your app_id and app_secret.
After that you need to request permissions to the user to publish_actions. If the user accepts, you'll receive a token (you need to store it in db). If you need to publish actions in a user page instead of his own page, you also need the manage_pages permission.
You need to read the facebook graph api documentation to understand how all this works.
The access token you receive expires after certain time. So, when you receive it, you can ask for a long lived token. The page tokens doesn't expire.
Facebook evaluates your app before approving it to be in production. They ask a couple of questions about how you'll use the user's token and data. You might have to put pictures of the flow too.
As far as I know, Facebook won't allow you to send pre populated messages to the user's wall. They user has to write it.
Hope it helped a bit!
I'm using Facebook::Graph and any time a page is loaded, I would like to detect server-side if a user has liked a certain page or not. I can't find in the documentation how to do this though. Is it possible to do this without sending the user ID to my server-side script? Because I know using the javascript SDK you can check this, but I feel like it might be different with a server-side API.
Not sure what you mean with "anytime a page is loaded"... I guess you mean an page of an App? If so, you need the user_likes permission to be able to get the information on the User's likes.
If you're using a Page Tab App, then you could get this info out of the signed_request which is passed to the App once the User accesses it from the Facebook Page Tab. See https://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/login/signed-request/ The indicator is in the page.liked field.
I am helping out a friend with a site for a venue that lists all events on FB with a location, ticket URI, time, etc.
I have found lots of info on how to get the data, but what I am unclear on is how to get public events without being logged in to FB.
What type of tokens do I need to have a website simply pull events data and display it to visitors?
Basically, what I am attempting to do is show a set number of upcoming events and assume that the visitors to the site are not logged in to FB.
On this page, https://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/fql/event, it says this:
Permissions
To read the event table you need:
a generic access_token for public events (those whose privacy is set to OPEN)
a user access_token with user_events permission for a user who can see the event for non-public events
an app access_token with user_events permission (for non-public events, must be the app that created the event)
a page access_token with user_events permission (for non-public events, must be the page that created the event)
I am not looking to get help with the code really, I am just having trouble figuring out how the access/auth process works.
It appears FQL may be the best option so I can do queries based on date ranges, but alas, I am stuck on the access/auth/token part.
What do I need to have in place to be able to list a Page's events on a 3rd party site?
If anyone has any advice there, I would appreciate it. Thanks.
Just to explain to others, you cannot get ALL the events in the city by graph search. You need to refine it either by user details or some other metric.
I figured it out.
This question helped, but was not correct and there is a syntax error in an answer:
Get Facebook events from public fan page
From what I found, you need to become an FB developer, create an app, get an ID and secret.
Use the SDK (PHP in my case), and this question had a good example of returning the list I want:
Link from ticket_uri is opening a blank page
I am having the same issue though of getting blank pages on the ticket link if the user is not logged into FB.
But my original issue is solved.
I am building a social application, users post data to the website, which is saved in our database.
This creates a record on the site, which is searchable and creates the basic content and function of the site (the purpose is not relevant at this point)
When a record is saved to our database, I want to "spread the word" and send this data out to social networks. Currently, I'm looking at Facebook in isolation.
So, I know how to create a post through the Graph API and post this content to the users Timeline, or indeed to a business page associated with the APP/Website.. but I am not sure how, or if indeed one should, maintain continuity.
What I mean... if a user creates a record on my website, and then the website/App creates a post on my business page, and also asks the user to post it in their Timeline, how do I stop this being two separate posts, and instead one post which has been shared?
I want to achieve:
User posts on website
>
Website posts to Page
>
Post on Page is "Shared" to users Timeline
As opposed to:
User posts on website
>
Website posts to Page
>
Website posts an additional post to users Timeline
The reason I want to do this, is that on the website, I want to be able to show shares, likes and comments from Facebook by tracking the ID of the initial post created when first entered onto my website.
Or am I trying to reinvent the wheel and should just use Facebook's comment plugin?
When you create the post on facebook on the Page, store the returned post ID in your data model.
From what I can tell, there is no way to access the normal user share directly through the API. If you insist on doing it programmatically without popping up any dialog for your user, you can make a post to the user's page which has (the start of) the Page post and a linkback to the Page post as an attachment. This is probably to prevent abuse.
However, if you don't mind relying on an undocumented and deprecated endpoint, you can use the old sharer.php endpoint, so long as you have a fully qualified link to the post you want to share (you can retrieve the url through the api). This will also require your user to enter anything appropriate in their share and then click "share."
The endpoint is
http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php
Call it with the u parameter filled in with the url, so
http://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=[URL encoded URL of the post you wanted to call]
You can try this with any facebook post (go to a post, copy the url, past in as the parameter), it's still working (I just tried it) but there are no guarantees. See the top answer to Facebook API: "Share" a post already posted on a page's wall?.
You can still access likes, comments, etc for that post id through the Graph API (and you can provide your users a direct link to the post). Cache/update them as recommended and display them on your own page. You are basically mirroring back onto your own site what is happening on facebook in regards to the post you made.
I would go this route especially if you are at all planning on branching into other services. That way you can do an aggregated display of statistics/likes/etc from the multiple services you are having your platform repost to. This is also good for (at least an impression of) data integrity for your users: they know that your service represents everything they have done in case anything happens to their facebook/etc accounts.
This could especially be noteworthy if they are worried about facebook/etc deleting any of their posts, or for recovering from any issues where a post/comment/etc is not properly stored by facebook/etc (for example, comments have a maximum length which, at least via the main FB UI, silently drops anything above the maximum length in a non recoverable way for the user).
How can i show the wall (feed) of my page to app on facebook? As i see in the page
www.facebook.com/kesha?sk=app_178091127385 and
www.facebook.com/pages/Khanduna-Yengu-Nangsu-Amuktang/187317137978077
I want show the wall(feed) of my page to my app of facebook. Please Help me.
I also try and see graph api as below
graph.facebook.com//feed
But Fail,
Please Help any one.
As I understand your question, you want to take the wall of your page and show the content of that on another page controlled by an app you have made, so that is the question I will answer.
There are a couple of things you need to do.
Facebook now requires you to have an access_token to get that information. You can get this in two different ways. Either you get your users permission to grab an access_token for them, or you create an access_token for one of the admin users with offline_access and manage_pages permissions.
There are problems with both cases:
1: Getting an access_token per user requires people to give permissions to your app which is quite annoying if they just gain access to the contents of the feed.
2: Having one access_token is also a problem seeing as Facebook puts a limit on how many requests you can make per access_token in a given time.
You need to balance these things out if you want the feed to be shown. Which case would you most likely use? If you don't have many users the second case might be the best, but if you go over the request limit no content will be shown and that could confuse your users.
Anyways.. Once you are past the access_token problem, you can access the information by getting the content from the page:
https://graph.facebook.com/YOUR_PAGE_ID/feed?access_token=YOUR_ACCESS_TOKEN.
You then get a nice json output you can use. If you are using the Javascript API you can simply use the information here:
http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/javascript/FB.api/
If you are ever unsure how to get the information you need there is a nice tool for that developed by Facebook called Graph API Explorer which you can find here:
