Build agent fails on second run for ASP.net 5 on VSO - powershell

I'm using VSO to create an automated build for a newly created ASP.NET 5 project. I followed the MSDN post and with a couple of tweaks, the following items work:

What I'm trying to do is create a build agent on my laptop. I downloaded the agent.zip file and ran the powershell configuration script. When I queue the first build, VSO contacts my build agent and the build works and is published to Azure.
What does not work is the second time I queue a build. The build fails executing the following command:

I would have guessed the work area would have been cleared out before the build started, but it does not seem to be the case. Also, if I manually clear the _work directory, the build succeeds. I've tried to clear the work are from within the PowerShell script, but this fails because the script is running in that directory.
Any suggestions of how to clear the work directory so that multiple builds will succeed ?

This is caused by the npm install command in the "PrePublish" script and the npm version used by VS.

Windows MAXPATH is limited to 260 characters while the old npm version does not apply this. The latest npm 3.x version has fixed this issue. But VS always use 1.4.9 version which cause the long path issue. See this issue for details: Update node to 5.x and npm to 3.x
The workaround for now would be remove the prepublish script from your project.json file and add additional steps in your build definition to perform these actions.

It looks like npm is not found by the agent. Make sure Node is installed globally on the machine and npm has been added to the system wide path environment variable.
Or add the Node Tool Installer task to your workflows.
I fixed the issue by deleting the npm publish tag in WebUI project file.

Visual Studio 2022 not listed in devops build solution pipeline task

I have an on-prem instance of Azure DevOps 2020.1.1 in the build pipeline I have a build solution task which has visual studio version set to "latest" when building a .NET6 project this fails saying of course .NET6 isn't supported because the latest version it seems to recognize is 2019, 2022 isn't even listed in the visual studio versios drop down.
I have installed visual studio 2022 on the server and the build agents see it (they were updated to the latest agents version).
How do I get the latest visual studio version to show as 2022 in the build solution task? MS hasn't released any updates for the on-prem server for this yet that I know of, is there a way to add it or make it find it?
The trick is to use a MSBUILD task and switch from Version to Specify Location and insert the path to the msbuild.exe of VS2022 e.g. C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2022\BuildTools\MSBuild\Current\Bin\msbuild.exe.

Another way is to use a Command line task and call the executable directly. If you need the complete VS development environment to build your application, than specify the path of the executable in the Tool field for example as "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\2022\Professional\Common7\IDE\devenv.com" and specify the solution and configuration in the Arguments field for example as "MySolution.sln /build "Release|Any CPU".

You can build Microsoft's task yourself and push these tasks directly into your project collection using tfx-cli. You can also create an extension containing these updates tasks and install that into your collection.

Make sure you have an extension manifest available in the folder when you run this script. You can look at this repo for an example:

Replace the contents of build.ps1 with the script above, update the vss-extension.*.json files with your own publisher and extensionid and it should spit out an extension for you.
That way you'll get a copy of the exact tasks Microsoft published in the latest release of Azure DevOps (cloud).

I've switch to a straight out MSBUILD task instead of a solution task, solves the problem for me :)
Edit PathFunctions.ps1 file located at ..\agent\_work\_tasks\VSBuild_71a9a2d3-a98a-4caa-96ab-affca411ecda\1.166.2\ps_modules\MSBuildHelpers\ replace $($MajorVersion+1).0) by $($MajorVersion+2).0) in lines 199 and 218.
Switching to the MSBuild task did not solve it for me, but what did work was changing the Pipeline Agent Specification from windows-2019 to windows-latest or windows-2022. This caused it to start using the windows-2022 VM image which apparently includes Visual Studio 2022, but windows-2019 only had VS 2019.
Note that the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\2022\Professional\MSBuild\Current\Bin\MSBuild.exe path also does not work anymore, because it's using the new Rosyln C# compiler at:
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio\2022\Enterprise\MSBuild\Current\Bin\Roslyn\csc.exe
One other required change was to update the NuGet package restore to the latest version.

How to build setup project from .vdproj in Azure DevOps?

I have recently upgraded some of our windows application to VS2019 and created the setup project using VSInstallerProject extension in VS2019 . What I noticed is setup is not getting created when the Release pipeline is run , but I need the msi (or exe) files here so I can use the same to install on app server .
I have made changes in my pipeline and added a task : 'DutchWorkz - Build VS Installer(s)' in the release pipeline .
I have attached the logs of the error I am getting at this task in Azure Devops below .
Build is getting failed at this task .
Can anyone guide me on what the issue here is and how can I resolve it ?
Also , I want to create the setup projects/msi in VS2019 , but I don't see Vs2019 option in this task,
how can I use this task in VS2019 version .I have Vs2019 installed on agent server .

I have tried using devenv command line too , inorder to build the setup project .I have tried it with both the vs2017 (professional) and vs 2019(enterprise) and I am getting issue in both .While issue with 2017 is about license , I am not able to figure out what's causing the issue for 2019 . EVEN though the command line task passed , the .vdproj setup project didn't get updated or build . I can see that from timestamp , all other projects getting updated as usual .
I found a similar ticket you can refer to it.
Configure self-hosted agent and make sure the VS Installer Projects extension is installed on your own build agent and then you can build the setup project either use command line task with "devenv" or use the "Build VS Installer" task.
If you get the error like 8000000A, you can follow the instruction here to configure your self-hosted agent: Solution: An error occurred while validating. HRESULT = '8000000A'.
By the way, since this extension is developed by a third party. You can connect the extension owner to get the detail info

We can install the extension Build VS Installer and use the task DutchWorkz - Build VS Installer(s) to build Visual Studio Installer Project in Azure Pipelines.
I looked at the package you mentioned, at this location - https://marketplace.visualstudio.com/items?itemName=dutchworkz.BuildInstaller&ssr=false#review-details
If you go there and look at the comments other users have left behind, the error is something that is present as part of the build process. The original developer has not fixed it.
At the same, just like the users have mentioned, you are able to see the msi installer and use it. So, you are (I am assuming) getting what you need, the installer.
My best suggestion is, since you are getting what you need, ignore the error and wait till the developer fixes this issue. Until then, there is nothing you or anybody else can do about it.
Note : I also noticed that if you are using the default configuration during the build process for simple projects, it works fine. Your project and build may have some customization which is where other users have reported errors.

CakeBuild: Get failed to install tool 'NUnit.ConsoleRunner'

I used CakeBuild to build and test my Xamarin Portable Class Library.
In the build.cake script I defined that I want to use the NUnit-Console to run my testcases. So I do

Now I found my problem and solved it.
The problem was that the NuGet.exe did not has a source feed which points to a public nuget source like "https://api.nuget.org/v3/index.json".
This was because my default NuGet.conf in under "C:\Users\YOUR_USER_HOME\AppData\Roaming\NuGet" had no packageSource defined. So Nuget just knows the local nuget package cache under "C:\Users\YOUR_USER_HOME.nuget\packages" and this did not include the specified package.
So after I added a packageSource in "C:\Users\YOUR_USER_HOME\AppData\Roaming\NuGet\NuGet.Conf" everything works fine.
Another way can be to add a new NuGet.Conf beside your build.ps1 file which contains all package sources you need for CakeBuild and your Xamarin project.

How to avoid Edeliver deployment error: "vm.args: No such file or directory"?

Context
We are trying to use edeliver to deploy a "Hot Upgrade" of a Phoenix Web Application to a remote Virtual Machine instance.
Our aim is to build an "upgrade" version of the app each time so that the app can be "hot" upgraded in production without any down-time.
We have succeeded in doing this "hot upgrade" on a "Hello World" phoenix app:

So, in theory this technique should work for our "real" app.
Attempting to Deploy a "Real" Phoenix App using Edeliver
Ran the following command (to build the upgrade):
mix edeliver build upgrade --auto-version=git-revision --from=$(git rev-parse HEAD~) --to=$(git rev-parse HEAD) --verbose
i.e. "build the upgrade from the previous git revision to the current one"
So far, so good. "Release successfully built!"
Error: vm.args: No such file or directory
When we attempt to deploy the upgrade:

Note: we have a little bash script that reads the latest upgrade version available in .deliver/releases and deploys that see: version.sh
Question:
Is there a way to ignore the absence of the vm.args file and continue the deployment?
Or if the file is required to complete the deployment, is there some documentation on how to create the file?

As mentioned by others, the vm.args file is necessary for BEAM to run the release. A default file is created by distillery during the release build process and should be located in releases/<version>/vm.args. From your log output it looks like expected directory is being checked.
Can you show us the contents of /home/hladmin/healthlocker/releases/?
Can you confirm that the default vm.args file is being created when building the release and extracting it (outside of the upgrade process)?

If diagnosing the problem with the default vm.args file doesn't get you anywhere, you can also write your own file and configure distillery to use that file instead of the default. The details for this are in the distillery configuration docs. In short,
add the vm_args setting to your distillery config, which should be at rel/config.exs(relative to your project root), for example:

set vm_args: "<path>/vm.args"
[...]
end
