I'm currently running into an issue where we changed over the name of a server (windows 2012). With the old name everything worked fine, after the name change it appears that the app pool identity is stuck with the old machine name in the machine account.
The site is using win auth to connect to our SQL server and provides an error:
LOGIN FAILED domainname\oldmachinename$
I notice when I change the app pool identity, the error changes, so it seems to be stuck with the old computer name, even though it's updated in local server data and control panel system properties.
How can I force the new name to be seen as the machine account?
I would remove the machine from the domain, change the hostname, re-join it to the domain, and that should alleviate the incorrect hostname issue.

This question follows an audit on my AD where Windows servers with very old PasswordLastSet attributes have been discovered.
I'm familiar with using the Pwd-last-set attribute in order to check when an AD user has last changed his password. But what does this attribute mean when talking about a computer-type object like a laptop or a windows server ?
The Microsoft documentation states it is "The date and time that the password for this account was last changed". I don't think this means the local administrator of the computer, since I've clearly not changed mine at the date my Pwd-last-set attribute indicates.
Finally, if it isn't the local administrator nor my account, how can I set a new password that will refresh the attribute ?
EDIT
So the password is actually the Machine Account password used for communication between the computer/server and the DC
It's supposed to be renewed every 30 days on default Windows settings through the following registery key : HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Netlogon\Parameters
I still don't have a way to easily force the renew of this password but found some leads :
Put the MaximumPasswordAge in the registery to a low number and restart the machine
Use the "Reset Account" options when right-clicking the object in the active directory -> What are the consequences for a server ?
Use the Reset-ComputerMachinePassword Powershell command -> What are the consequences for a server ?
I had to change the name of the windows 7 system. Unaccountably, vncserver is still using the old computer name. This was RealVnc free version. I re-installed but it is still using the old computer name.
I had a Z400 motherboard go bad and it took the disk drive. I replaced the motherboard, $39 was cheap, and I cloned one of my other Z400 workstation C drives using Acronis. I booted the replacement motherboard with the cloned copy, changed its name to the old defective one, and activated windows. When It rebooted, vncserver still had the old computer name and I cannot get rid of it and it is conflicting with the vncserver on the other Z400 since they both use the same name. There is no option in the server to use a different name that I can find anywhere.
IPs are different and all system behave fine. I can ping and even access shares using their names. The problem system clearly shows the correct name but, unaccountably, vncserver is using the wrong name.
This system will be upgraded to 10 in a few days, maybe the problem will go away when that happens.
Solved! First I had to log in and reduce the number of clients to under 5 as that was my limit. Then I had to remove the problem system's leftover name. This was all done at realvnc web site. Once under 5 systems then I could add the problem one and once it connected to realvnc's cloud then it got the correct name. This was an artifact of having more then 5 systems when I was only licensed for 5. The "6th" one worked locally as its setup was still valid, but it was refused connection to the cloud so it never got to change its name. It "worked" until I did a flushdns and its old setup was no longer valid.
When I am trying to process dimensions after creating a data source view I get the error:
The project could not be deployed to the server because of the following connectivity problems : A connection cannot be made. Ensure that the server is running. To verify or update the name of the target server, right-click on the project in Solution Explorer, select Project Properties, click on the Deployment tab, and then enter the name of the server.
I have checked in task manager & SQLBrowser is running. Why am I getting this error?
I was able to get the SQL Server instances on my computer this way:
Start Menu
Microsoft SQL Server 2008 or your version
Server Installation Center
Admin login
Select "Tools" from left menu
Select "Installed SQL Server features discovery report"
You then get a nice HTML web page. You want to look for Database Services. You should see an instance name. Mine is called "SQLEXPRESS." So the combination of server name and instance would be MYCOMPUTER\SQLEXPRESS given that my computer name is MYCOMPUTER.
BTW, the default instance name is MSSQLSERVER.
Alternatively, you can get it from your registry. Just run regedit and look for this key: Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\Instance Names\SQL
Check that the SQL Server service itself (or MSSQLSERVER) is running. Also check the connection string.
If you want to deploy the project to a named instance of Analysis Services on the local computer, or to an instance on a remote server, change the Server property to the appropriate instance name, such as <InstanceName>.
https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/analysis-services/multidimensional-tutorial/lesson-2-5-deploying-an-analysis-services-project?view=asallproducts-allversions
You need the server name and the instance name.
Open port 2382,2383 to server solve this issue for me.
Typically I remote into a machine with IP Address 00.00.00.00 and then I have an account in a domain, let's call it myspecialaccount\firstname.lastname.
Then I use Windows auth to connect to SQL Server instance for example:
ABCLACSQLC123\DEV04A
So my question is HOW can I connect from my laptop through SSMS directly to the machine (pending ports are open etc..)
In order to use Windows Authentication, you'd have to add the credentials you use to login to the laptop as a "Login" to the SQL Server. That can only be done if
You login to your laptop with a domain user and
The user is in the same domain in which your SQL Server instance resides
Otherwise, you have no choice but to use SQL Server Authentication.
In this case, you login to your laptop with a user in "Corp" domain, but SQL Server instance is in "Services" domain. So it won't work. Unless I think both domains are part of the same Forest.
Look at this answer : https://stackoverflow.com/a/1615431/3317709. There is no trick to login, unless you get rid of the "Network related..." error. If you are getting this error, SSMS is not even able to find your server let alone logging into it. Once you get "Login failed..." error, from that point, we can tinker and try to get thru using your windows auth.
Try creating a shortcut to runas.exe, pointing to SSMS.
C:\Windows\System32\runas.exe /netonly /user:myspecialaccount\firstname.lastname "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Binn\VSShell\Common7\IDE\Ssms.exe"
(The path to your SSMS exe may vary.)
When you double-click the shortcut, this will open up SSMS. You should then be able to connect to your instance (ABCLACSQLC123\DEV04A) as if it were on your local machine.
See here for more info on the runas command: https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc771525.aspx
Install SQL Server Management Studio Express on your laptop. Microsoft has made the download link obscenely hard to find on their own site, but I did manage to find it here. Download the one for your system, probably x64.
Installation isn't much easier. Once everything is extracted, run the program, and switch to the installation tab, and choose "Standalone installation or add new features". Continue along the installation, and just install the management tools.
Once installed and running, use the Connect to Server dialog (it should open when you start the program, but if it doesn't, it's the first option under the File tab), and target wherever you want to connect (IP or server name should both work). If your laptop also authenticates to the same server that handles Windows authentication for your database, you can use Windows authentication, otherwise, you'll have to create a SQL Server account to use for login.
I have a php project which I want to test on localhost. I was suggested to use a no-ip domain name. I've done that and using this tutorial
and now I have a directory with a name same as the domain name on localhost. The project was previously connected a similar no-ip domain name(I wasn't present at that time) but then it expired and I'm setting it up again.
I have replaced every instance of the previous no-ip domain name in the code base with the no-ip domain name that I created and changed the project's Run Configurations in NetBeans but when I navigate to the domain name I don't see the obvious changes I've made in the development code.
When I test the connection it succeeds and when I save changes the Remote Log say that the changes have been saved and that the file has been received. When I navigate to localhost/shhasan.ddns.net I get a database error which points to Loader.php. I've checked Database.php and its the same setup which has worked before as the username, password, hostname is consistent with those on phypmyadmin. I've been stuck at this issue for 2 days now I would really appreciate help.
Your Loader.php is looking for a database/DB.php, but you only have a database.php.
