Using jqGrid free (version 4.15.6) to show very basic information about invoices (ie: date created, date due, client, total, status). The invoices grid only has a few pertinent columns that are displayed because it is just not needed to show more than that. In reality there are a lot of other invoice-related fields that are not shown. I would like to offer end-users the ability to filter the grid based on a lot of these other parameters that are simply not part of the grid contents.
I know jqGrid offers built-in searching, and you can easily just add hidden columns with all the data, but I feel this is not good for us--invoices contain a lot of data--data that is not necessarily present in just the invoices database table. We want the grid to provide many other filtering options outside of the base invoice data but we do NOT want to use the built-in filter options. Instead, I would like to use a separate HTML table with a bunch of search fields that our server-side code would know how to pull back). When one decides to invoke the external filter, we want the grid to load all invoices matching that combined filter. And if one chooses to navigate using the grid's paging buttons, we want the grid to continue using the original external filtering parameters.
Hope this makes sense. Maybe I am just overthinking this but I am fairly certain the grid is designed to use it's built in filtering/searching tools/dialog and I have not found anyway to override this behavior. Actually I have using an older jqGrid but that involved using jQuery to completely REPLACE the default pager with custom HTML and event handling. I never could figure this out with older jqGrid so I chose to write it myself. But that code is less than optimum and even I know it is subject to much criticism. Having upgraded to 4.15.6, I want to do this the best way and I want to keep it logical and practical.
I have tried using beforeRequest() and onPaging() events to change the 'url' parameter, thinking that if I modified the url, I could change the GET to include all of our custom filtering fields. It seems that does not work as the url NEVER changes from the originally defined value. Console logging does show the events firing but no change to url. On top of that, the grid ALWAYS passes its own page field, _search field, etc. to the server so the server NEVER sees the filter request.
How does one define their own custom filtering coupled with paging loader and still take advantage of the built-in paging events? What am I missing?

It's difficult to answer on your question because you didn't posted code fragments, which shows how you use jqGrid and because the total number of data, which could be needed to display in all pages isn't known.
In general there are two main alternatives implementing of custom filtering:
server side filtering
client side filtering
One can additionally use a mix from both filtering. For example, one can load from the server all invoices based on some fixed filters (all invoices of specific user or all invoices of one organization, all invoices of the last month) and then use loadonce: true, forceClientSorting: true options to sort and to filter the returned data on the client side. The user could additionally to filter the subset of data locally using filter toolbar of searching dialog.
The performance of client side is essentially improved last years and loading relatively large JSON data from the server could be done very quickly. Because of that Client-Side-Filtering is strictly recommended. For better understanding the performance of local sorting, filtering and paging I'd recommend you to try the functionality on the demo. You will see that the timing of local filtering of the grid with 5000 rows and 13 columns is better as you can expect mostly from the round trip to the server and processing of server side filtering on some very good organized database. It's the reason why I recommend to consider to use client side sorting (or loadonce: true, forceClientSorting: true options) as far it's possible.
If you need to filter data on the server then you need just send additional parameters to the server on every request. One can do that by including additional parameters in postData. See the old answer for additional details. Alternatively one can use serializeGridData to extend/modify the data, which will be set to the server.
After the data are loaded from the server, it could be sorted and filtered locally before the first page of data will be displayed in the grid. To force local filtering one need just add forceClientSorting: true additionally to well known loadonce: true parameter. It force applying local logic on the data returned from the server. Thus one can use postData.filters, search: true to force additional local filtering and sortname and sortorder parameter to force local sorting.
One more important remark about using hidden columns. Every hidden column will force creating DOM elements, which represent unneeded <td> elements. The more DOM elements you place on the page the more slow will be the page. If local data will be used (or if loadonce: true be used) then jqGrid hold data associated with every row twice: once as JavaScript object and once as cells in the grid (<td> elements). Free jqGrid allows to use "additional properties" instead of hidden columns. In the case no data will be placed in DOM of the grid, but the data will be hold in JavaScript objects and one able to sort or filter by additional properties in the same way like with other columns. In the simplest way one can remove all hidden columns and to add additionalProperties parameter, which should be array of strings with the name of additional properties. Instead of strings elements of additionalProperties could be objects of the same structures like colModel. For example, additionalProperties: [{ name: "taskId", sorttype: "integer"}, "isFinal"]. See the demo as an example. The input data of the grid can be seen here. Another demo shows that searching dialog contains additional properties additionally to jqGrid column. The commented part columns of searching shows more advanced way to specify the list and the order of columns and additional properties displayed in searching dialog.
Forgive my answering like this but this question started out on one subject related to filtering and paging but with using an external filtering source. Oleg actually has several demos over many threads that I was able to use to accomplish the custom filtering and maintain default built-in paging. So his answer will be the accepted answer for the original question topic.
But in the solution of original, I encountered another issue with loading the grid initially. I wanted to have the grid load with default filtering values should no other filter already be in place. That really should have been a different question because it really did not affect the first.
I found yet another Oleg reply on a completely different question:
jqGrid - how to set grid to NOT load any data initially?.
Oleg answered that question and that answer solved our second need to load one way, then allow another way.
So, on initial load, we look for the filter params server-side. None given? We pull records using default filtering. Params present? We use initial provided params. The difference with initial loading we do not AJAX exit. We instead json_encode the data and place it in the grid definition as follows:

Since the datatype is set to 'local', the grid does NOT go to server initially, so the data parameter is used by the grid. Once we are ready to filter, we use Oleg's solution from yet another answer on yet another question to dynamically apply the filter as follows:

This allows us to have the grid show initial data loaded locally, and then subsequent filtering changes the grid datatype to 'json', which forces the grid to go to server with new filter params where it loads the more specific filtering.

I'm using a virtual document structure generated by a script to create a document from EA, and I'm trying to use the same template fragment several times with different elements and different headings.
For example, I have an element which describes the input data to one program, and the output data to another program, so I can't really store the information in the element I'm documenting.
Where it is the input, I want one heading (and similar references within the template), and where it is output I want different values for the headings.
I've tried using the ReportTitle tagged value in the individual <model document> element, but this appears to be ignored and only the <report package> value is used throughout (which makes me wonder why they are there in the first place).
While I could create multiple templates all referring to the same fragment and hard-code the different headings, but that is messy, and as I already have fragments within fragments so it could result in a lot of almost identical templates and fragments. Variables that I can set for each <model document> would be much preferable.
Has anyone got a better approach than this? Thanks!
I don't think there's an easy solution.
If there is a way to determine based on the element, package, or diagram ID whether you should use one title or the other then you could use a script or SQL fragment to return the correct title.
If that is not the case I guess the only possibility is to hardcode the different titles in your templates.
In order to avoid too much duplication you could create a template with only the title and use that on a model document. Since you are generating the modeldocuments by a script anyway that doesn't cost any user time.
I'm using the SmartBear SoapUI 5.2.1 free version.
I have a rather large project and hundreds of web services that require testing. The client wants the testers to use this software and they have no technical experience and no experience with this software.
So, I have to write up Test Cases for all of these services. What I'm struggling with is that some values that are in the XML content need to be unique and rather than a random number I want to be able to use a Global Variable (idCounter) and increment it every time the service call is ran.
Does anyone know what the syntax would be to get this to execute?
The random does not work because very well because it is ranged 1-100 so it is possible to end up with the same ID resulting in a failed call. Also, it is not an issue with various testers running this because the id gets mashed with the users ID as well making it unique to the user.

Your question does not have sufficient detail to be able to provide a definitive answer.
The approach that you could take is:
Create a test case property, call it maybe identifier.
Create a transfer properties step, which takes the value, increments it by one, and stores it back in the test case property.
In your call, use the new property. Following your comment, the code would look something like this:
<record_identifier>${yyyymmdd}${username}${#TestCase#identifier}</record_identifier>
You can also create a pre-step to reset this property to some known starting value.
I'm currently writing automated tests for a GWT application using Selenium and Java. For page elements that are Widgets, this is relatively straightforward, given that unique IDs can be set using the ensureDebugIds() method.
However, some types on the pages I work with are not widgets, but other types, possibly container types (such as Cells or grid rows that are essential HTML tables). Is there a similar method to ensureDebugIds() for this? Or is there a way to create custom IDs for these elements that acts in a similar way compatible with ensureDebugId()?
You would need to closely collaborate with you dev team to set Id's on any element which GWT does not handle in its ensureDebugId. Its straightforward to id as all UIObjects have setId api. If any HTML code is being is injected then ids need to be determined by a simple convention and set up for Selenese test case writing to be easier.
I am developing a Novell Identity Manager driver for Salesforce.com, and am trying to understand the Salesforce.com platform better.
I have had really good success to date. I can read pretty much arbitrary object classes out of SFDC, and create eDirectory objects for them, and what not. This is all done and working nicely. (Publisher Channel). Once I got Query events mapped out, most everything started working in the Publisher Channel.
I am now working on sending events back to SFDC (Subscriber channel) when changes occur in eDirectory.
I am using the upsert() function in the SOAP API, and with Novell Identity Manager, you basically build the SOAP doc, and can see the results as you build it. (You can do it in XSLT or you can use the various allowed tokens to build the document in DirXML Script. I am using DirXML Script which has been working well so far.).
The upshot of that comment is that I can build the SOAP document, see it, to be sure I get it right. Which is usually different than the Java/C++ approach that the sample code usually provides. Much more visual this way.
There are several things about upsert() that I do not entirely understand. I know how to blank a value, should I get that sort of event. Inside the <urn:sObjects> node, add a node like (assuming you get your namespaces declared already):

I know how to add a value (AttrValue) to the attribute (FieldName), add a node like:
<FieldName>AttrValue</FieldName>
All this works and is pretty straight forward.
The question I have is, can a value in SFDC be multi-valued? In eDirectory, a multi valued attribute being changed, can happen two ways:
All values can be removed, and the new set re-added.
The single value removed can be sent as that sort of event (remove-value) or many values can be removed in one operation.
Looking at SFDC, I only ever see Multi-picklist attributes that seem to be stored in a single entry : or ; delimited. Is there another kind of multi valued attribute managed differently in SFDC? And if so, how would one manipulate it via the SOAP API?
I still have to decide if I want to map those multi-picklists to a single string, or a multi valued attribute of strings. First way is easier, second way is more useful... Hmmm... Choices...

Apex Explorer is a kicking tool for browsing the database and testing queries. Much like DBVisualizer does for JDBC connected databases. This would have been so much harder without it!
SoapUi is also required, and a lovely tool!
As far as I know there's no multi-value field other than multi-select picklists (and they map to semicolon-separated string). Generally platform encourages you to create a proper relationship with another (possibly new, custom) table if you're in need of having multiple values associated to your data.
Only other "unusual" thing I can think of is how the OwnerId field on certain objects (Case, Lead, maybe something else) can be used to point to User or Queue record. Looks weird when you are used to foreign key relationships from traditional databases. But this is not identical with what you're asking as there will be only one value at a time.
Of course you might be surpised sometimes with values you'll see in the database depending on the viewing user's locale (stuff like System Administrator profile becoming Systeembeheerder in Dutch). But this will be still a single value, translated on the fly just before the query results are sent back to you.
When I had to perform SOAP integration with SFDC, I've always used WSDL files and most of the time was fine with Java code generated out of them with Apache Axis. Hand-crafting the SOAP message yourself seems... wow, hardcore a bit. Are you sure you prefer visualisation of XML over the creation of classes, exceptions and all this stuff ready for use with one of several out-of-the-box integration methods? If they'll ever change the WSDL I need just to regenerate the classes from it; whereas changes to your SOAP message creation library might be painful...
