MySQL Workbench 6.3 (Mac) hangs on simple queries - mysql-workbench

I am using MySQL Workbench 6.3.7 build 1199 CE (64 bits) on a Mac with OS X Yosemite 10.10.5. I am connecting to an Amazon RDS MySQL instance.
When I enter a simple query such as
select * from `devices`;
and click the lightning-bolt-with-cursor icon, the query starts, indicated by the spinner activating next to the "SQL File 4" tab in the following screenshot. However, the query doesn't complete and it just hangs. The white-hand-in-red-stop-sign icon is disabled.
I can only force quit MySQL Workbench from this point on. If I try to do a regular quit, nothing happens.
How can I consistently run a simple query on my database? Sometimes it works (maybe 10% of the time), but it mostly just hangs.

UPDATE 3: The problem is fixed for MacOS HighSierra in MySQL Workbench 6.3.10.
UPDATE 2: It looks like the bug is recurring again in MacOS HighSierra. See https://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=83658 for more details.
There is an unofficial build that fixes the problem. You can download it at: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B2fTesDcrHzVRGVFWEdILWpuaEE?usp=sharing
The build was created by Bob Davenport. See https://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=87714 for more details.
UPDATE: The bug is fixed in MySQL Workbench 6.3.9.
----------------------- original answer -----------------------
It is a known MySQL bug: http://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=83658 caused by GateKeeper Path Randomisation introduced in MacOS Sierra. See https://weblog.rogueamoeba.com/2016/06/29/sierra-and-gatekeeper-path-randomization/.
A possible workaround is to remove the Quarantine ACL:
xattr -dr com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/MySQLWorkbench.app"

I found that if you use the latest 6.3 version, that in order to get queries to work, you have open a first connection and ignore it and then open a second connection. This creates two tabs in the workbench. If you perform your queries in the second tab, it works. If you try in the first tab, it hangs.
I also have found that you have to do a force quit the workbench.
I hope the mysql folks get this fixed.

To resolve this issue, I downgraded MySQL Workbench to 6.1. Now I am able to run my query and it doesn't hang.

In my case, it was changing the connection->ssl->Use SSL setting from "If available" to "No". Workbench 6.3.8 on OSX 10.12.1 now works for me.

The spinning wheel of death is due to the new feature introduced in the Sierra update called "Gatekeeper Path Randomization".
Follow the instructions:
Open MySQL Workbench :)
Right click on your connection (most likely “localhost” or “127.0.0.1”)
Choose “Edit connection”
On the right hand window select “Connection > SSL”
Change “Use SSL” from “If available” to “No”
Now click on the tab “System Profile”
Choose “MacOS X” as System Type
Click “Test connection”

The version 6.3.9 solved the problem, but this version is not showing in "Check for upgrades" option, you need to download directly from the site.
MySQL Workbench official download page

6.3.9 fixed the issue in the mac. Here is the link MySql 6.3.9

At last I have downloaded MySQL Workbench 6.3.10 and install MySQL Workbench 6.3.10 and solved my problem. I have downloaded MySQL Workbench 6.3.10 from bellow link https://dev.mysql.com/downloads/workbench/
It is working for me.. I think this will work for you..

I found that deleting the cache and workspaces folder contents (~/Library/Application Support/MySQL/Workbench) it works again. What I haven't found is how to ensure it doesn't hang again :-(
I also found that if I manually close the Connection tab from the menu and exit WB from the menu and not from the OS window buttons it seems more stable next time.
PS: I am using SSH connection so it may be due to this but it is not always happening.
UPDATE: A clean install and no SSH configurations the issue still persists. Unless you manually go and delete the cache folder files it continues to hang.

I was getting around the problem for awhile by deleting the user library folder and dropping back to version 6.2.5 ... but today found the problem was back. So today I deleted the user library folder and dropped back to version 6.1.7. It's working again, for now.

In my case, the IP address changed where mySQL was served.
Flushing the DNS fixed it for me:
sudo dscacheutil -flushcache;
sudo killall -HUP mDNSResponder;
say cache flushed

This seemed to help some of the time, but not 100%:
Connect to the database with a different user, and then re-connect with the original user.
I'm about to downgrade like the accepted answer says though, as this doesn't solve it every time.

This is still an open bug in 6.3.8:
https://bugs.mysql.com/bug.php?id=82231
The possible workaround is to open secondary tab with the same connection and work in there. However it crashes anyway from time to time.
Until the bug is fixed I use free Mysql Workbench aleternative for common work. For mac users I would suggest https://sequelpro.com.

Upgrade to 6.3.9 fixed the issue. The 6.3.4 was hanging on queries for me. Unfortunately the Help > Check for Updates didn't indicate any updates were available, so I went to the source.

This can probably help as a temporary/immediate solution. If I try to manually type the below query, MySQL Workbench hangs, especially at x.*
SELECT
x.*
FROM x_table x;
But if I write the SQL in another editor and paste it in MySQL Workbench and run the query, it doesn't hang.
Versions: MacOS Big Sur (11.2), MySQL Workbench 8.0

I can't open my MySQL Workbench (workbench execution error)

I'm scared to ask this because people can be a little mean on here but I've watched 1000 of YouTube videos and went through just as many google searches. I was trying to create a data dictionary for mysql diagram. I used this website https://dataedo.com/kb/tools/mysql-workbench/how-to-export-data-dictionary#toc_0 to help me. I downloaded the .py link listed in the install plugin step. The followed the instructions in mysql. It said the plugin install was successful and to restart my workbench. After that I started getting the error shown in the picture. I have tried everything:
Restart workbench
Repair workbench through msi download
Followed the steps in this link: https://www.tutorialspoint.com/how-do-i-kill-all-the-processes-in-mysql-show-processlist
Updated all my sql products in mysql installer
Made sure mysql services were turned on and running
I don't know what else to do. I can't even open workbench to see if the plugin is the issue because again I can't get in. I just need some help
That is a strannge error, where mysql workbench has some corrupt files.
Deinstall MySQL Workbench with the MySQL Installer
Install Workbench again
So everything will start normal again, the configuration and connections will stay and can be used again as normal
This is not an installation issue, so don't waste your time by trying to fix this issue by repeating the installation.
The error comes from the approach where MySQL Workbench tries to ensure there's only one instance of it running. For that it searches the process list for another instance and, if one was found, sends the command line parameters it got to that instance, letting the already running instance handle them (and shuts itself down after that).
But again: this happens only if another instance is found, so check your process list carefully. Filter by the term "MySQL" to see any MySQL related processes (including that of a MySQL server). Shutdown/kill any of these processes and try launching WB again.
Same issue happened to me and it was like what the heck. Don't waste your time to uninstall and reinstall because it won't solve your problem.
Solution: open your file explorer and delete the entire folder "Workbench"
Path: %appdata%\MySQL\Workbench
I have the same issue with this file.
Just as Jr Relampagos says, delete the .py file here : AppData\Roaming\MySQL\Workbench\modules
Restart Workbench, it works for me.
With me I'm just go to C:\Users<USER>\AppData\Roaming\MySQL\Workbench\modules and then delete the .py file you install, then open the Workbench again

Error builtin:list-members on trying auto complete in mysql workbench

Till yesterday auto complete was working in mysql workbench. Today getting below error on trying auto complete(Ctrl+space).
Kindly help to resolve it if you have an idea.
I restarted MySQL Workbench and now its working fine.
It appears this is a known bug in MySQL workbench since 2018: bugs.mysql.com...
Others have had success from rolling back to version 6.3.10. The bug is still present in the current version 8.0.23.
Another potential solution is delete the .column_widths file in:
[username]\AppData\Roaming\MySQL\Workbench\cache
Ironically Mysql Workbench's .column_widths appear to be a sqlite version 3 file
I believe you corrupted your Workbench installation somehow, so the easiest way to fix that is to re-install the application.

Service 'MongoDB Server' (MongoDB) failed to start

I'm trying to install mongo DB on my local machine with the installer from the official website. But I'm continuously getting this message, can someone help?
I've tried the solution provided here but didn't help.
I suggest doing the following:
Hit Win+R to open up you run.exe then inside of it enter services.msc to open up services. Try locating the service under the name of MongoDB Server and set the Startup Type manually to Automatic - [In addition to that, you could set the username and password manually. If you get a message saying the user was granted login as a service right, try hitting retry on the MSI dialog and see if it starts].
Important:
Don't forget to save and close everything (services.msc) before continuing.
Also very important, you should (must) check your .NET framework version and update it to version 4.5 and above. You could download a software like eg Driver Booster to update all of your drivers and additional components that are outdated.
I ran into the same issue. My problem was the installation location. I was trying to install under C:\MongoDB. I resolved it by installing in the default MongoDb location which is C:\Program Files\MongoDB.
For me this is usually an issue with the configuration file %ProgramFiles%\MongoDB\Server\x.x\bin\mongod.cfg
At some time there was an invalid option "snmp" enabled (only valid in enterprise version).
Nowadays, although the installer asks for directories for data and logs it doesn't ALWAYS seem to use these, but defaults to %MONGO_DATA_PATH% or %MONGO_LOG_PATH%, respectively. I don't know where these should be defined, but the server fails at accessing c:\data\db (which doesn't exist). So you have to correct the paths.
I also faced this kind of error. But I just change the Network service to Local system in Log On As tab.
Follow my step-by-step below to resolve it:
Press Win+R, type: services.msc, then looking for MongoDB Server (MongoDB)
Double click on MongoDB Server (MongoDB).
Then it will open properties tab. On that tab click on Log On
After that check two items i.e. Local System account and Allow service to interact with desktop
After that press Apply and OK button. That's it, cheers!!
Open command prompt and copy the following command:-
"C:\Program Files\MongoDB\Server\4.2\bin\mongo.exe"
NOTE: This Tricks is work on my Windows 8.1 PC.
Comment out string with mp: in configuration file: %ProgramFiles%\MongoDB\Server\x.x\bin\mongod.cfg
Like this:
...
#snmp:
#mp:
Click Windows+r, type lusemgr.msc , Go to Groups and double click Administrators, Click Add, Click Advanced and click Find Now. Double click in Network Service (in bottom list) and click OK.
It worked for me.
Installing in the other locations other than the windows directory caused me this error. Reinstalling the setup with the recommended method of "complete" fixed it.
The problem occurs if you have Windows version previous to Windows 10.
Install the following update before installing MongoDB. Click on the link below.
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2999226/update-for-universal-c-runtime-in-windows
It worked for me.
The problem occurs if you have Windows version previous to Windows 7. Install the following update by going to below link you have to download
Windows6.1-KB2999226-x64.msu
#You have to download and install then go to servies.msu and start MongoDB server by Start also go into log on and set to #local machine

Bad screen redrawing in Oracle SQL Developer after statment with error [duplicate]

I have a problem with Oracle SQL Developer. When I use it on a Windows Server 2003 machine, it works fine. When I use it on my Windows 7 desktop, I get a lot of redraw problems in the query results grid when I scroll either horizontally or vertically, like so:
Edit: ImageShack was the original image host for my screenshot, and it's no longer a valid url. Since my problem is fixed now, I can't repro this. The gist is that the client area of the result grids was repainted as gibberish during scrolling.
This makes it tricky to assess the results of your queries. Clicking on the header and on individual cells causes it to then redraw properly, but it's goofy to not be able to just scroll normally. Is there any way to fix this? I am using the current version of SQL Developer 1.5.5 with the included JVM.
I couldn't even see the dropdown list when I clicked Tools. Here's what I did.
Click Tools
Try to locate Preferences by moving your mouse downwards starting from the Tools button.
When in Preferences, do the same in step 2 for the left side of the panel and try to locate Environment.
When in 'Environment', try to locate 'Look and Feel'. You won't be able to see the caption but it has these values: Windows | Oracle. You'll know you found it when you see a dropdown with an actual value of Oracle.
Change it to Windows.
That solved my problem.
To hell with these kinds of stupid problems.
You need to turn off DirectDraw -- see http://tiredblogger.wordpress.com/2009/05/29/configuring-oracle-sql-developer-for-windows-7/, specifically the bit where they add the following to sqldeveloper.conf:
AddVMOption -Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true
I finally solved the problem:
Go to \sqldeveloper\bin\sqldeveloper.conf and add this line:
AddVMOption -Duser.language=en
The problem was de user language (in spanish do not works)
I finally solved the problem after many tries in windows 10. Oracle should fix this without tricks...
What I did:
Download lastest sqldeveloper 4.1.5 with JDK bundled.
Run sqldeveloper and import settings from previous install.
Close sqldeveloper, and go to USER\AppData\Roaming\sqldeveloper erasing config folders of older versions.
Modify file \sqldeveloper\sqldeveloper\bin
Change this option value to true
AddVMOption -Dsun.java2d.ddoffscreen=true
Comment line:
#AddVMOption -Dsun.locale.formatasdefault=true
Add this options before IncludeConfFile sentence at then end:
AddVMOption -Dsun.awt.keepWorkingSetOnMinimize=true
AddVMOption -Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true
And finally always start sqldeveloper with sqldeveloper\sqldeveloper\binsqldeveloper64W.exe
And change sqldeveloper theme to "windows style".
This problem still reproduces in 2015, I'm using W7, jdk version 1.8.0_40-b25 and sqldeveloper version Version 4.1.0.18.
I had the same problem and nothing seems to help, not even William Rose's answer, until, in my desperation, I put the AddVMOption from his answer in the last line of my sqldeveloper.conf file and Voila! It worked. It seems that somehow the option is shadowed if you put it at the begging.
Just wanting to add this bit of information, but I can't comment yet due to lack of reputation.
i had the same problem with vista and win 7.
just downloaded the latest sql developer 1.5.5 version WITHOUT jdk included
exported my connections from the previously installed sql developer and
deleted my installed version!
then downloaded the JDK 1.6 update 16 from sun and installed it: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp (32bit version! even if you have win x64. sql developer doesn't accept JDK x64!)
then i unzipped the sql developer 1.5.5 i downloaded (without the jdk)
on first start sql developer asks you for the path to java jdk: given it the path that i installed the jdk 32bit from above and it now runs fine!
even without switching from aero to basic windows design and without redrawing-problems.
hope this helps you too...
Just install old version Oracle SQL Developer 3.2.2 (3.2.20.09.87) and jdk-6u35-windows-x64.
That's how I solved the problem.
I made this step after solved
Add or replace the attribute of the following config file.
..\sqldeveloper\bin\sqldeveloper.conf
AddVMOption -Dsun.java2d.noddraw=true
Turkish developer can see this site
Remove or comment out the line below in sqldeveloper.conf:
# AddVMOption -Dsun.locale.formatasdefault=true

sql developer hangs on startup - what can I do?

At present I cannot run it (SQL Developer 4.1) because it hangs on "Restoring Editors" while starting. I suppose I've done it by exiting it before by killing sql developer process because it was hanged on fetching objects to Schema Browser so long...
Maybe I would clean some temporary files but can't find any.
Any ideas?
Deleting files from c:\Users\MY_USER\AppData\Roaming\SQL Developer\SQL History
and c:\Users\MY_USER\AppData\Roaming\SQL Developer\System...
Really helped me to resolve the connection issues
Basing on this thread https://community.oracle.com/thread/2564842 I've created own solution.
Extract installation of current version SQL Developer (4.1.0.17.29)
At "c:\Users\MY_USER\AppData\Roaming\SQL Developer\"
I've changed directory name system4.1.0.17.29 to system4.1.0.17.28.
After running newly extracted SQL Developer (4.1.0.17.29) I was prompted to let copy configuration from version 4.1.0.17.28 to 4.1.0.17.29 ;)
Everything works great now. I suppose that running the same (broken) installation after decreasing version could also help.
Remove folders c:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\SQL Developer\system4.1.3.20.78\system_cache*. SQLDeveloper will recreate it after launching.
Just execute sqldeveloper as administrator. It works fine!
In my case the problem was because of windows compatibility issue. So I've selected my windows version and it's stop from randomly crash after startup
Our setup:
Windows 10
Sqldeveloper Versions <= 20.4.0
We observed this problem as well. Even worse while working over a VPN connection. I followed a couple of hints with more or less no effect.
To move
C:\Users\<USER>\AppData\Roaming\SQL Developer
to a local directory by adding this line
AddVMOption -Dide.user.dir=c:\temp\sqldev-conf
in the \sqldeveloper\bin\sqldeveloper.conf file gave us some improvement, but the “IndexPreferencesTask” still got stuck several times on startup.
After some more hours on unsuccessful research, we moved back from JDK 11 to JDK 8.
This solved 99% of the problem. The “IndexPreferencesTask” still hangs on startup but for less than a second.
Sounds to me like a problem with JDK 11.
In my case when i changed Tools --> Preferences --> Environment -> Look and Feel to Windows it is solved.
Delete the History files from C:\Users\User\AppData\Roaming\sqldeveloper
Restart the PC
In my case, the solution was kind of weird. After battling to resolve this for 2 days, no luck. Suddenly, on my mac, I searched for sql developer, not sqldeveloper. It popped up a sqldeveloper application (not sure how that is different from what I have been trying to open ), clicked it and boom, it opened. My guess is that there is a copy of that app on my system that I should have been opening rather than trying to open the reinstalled app. Note: I reinstalled the app after it started misbehaving though.
Operating System: Windows 10
Oracle Sqldeveloper Ver: 17.4.0
The problem has been noticed sometime when any network security
patch was installed on your machine. Looks like the patch impacts
your cached data under your user profile folder.
As above Lakh, rtbf and others answered. Removing below folders
will resolve the issue.
C:\Users\<userId>\AppData\Roaming\SQL Developer\SqlHistory
C:\Users\<userId>\AppData\Roaming\SQL Developer\system17.4.0.355.2349
If any one find more approriate reason please feel free to
disagree with my answer.
