I am working on a 2D space game, similar to Roid Rage. I have a space shuttle in it. The shuttle will move around freely and will avoid obstacles. I have made the movement and rotation part of the shuttle successfully (using rigidbody2d). But now I am unable to make the camera follow the shuttle.
First I tried making the camera a child of shuttle. In this way, the camera followed the shuttle. But it didn't show any rotation of shuttle because I guess the camera also rotates with the shuttle in this case.
Then I did this:
public Transform shuttle;
private Vector3 offset;
void Start() {
offset = transform.position;
}
void LateUpdate() {
transform.position = shuttle.transform.position + offset;
}
In this case, the camera followed the shuttle but when I tap the screen and the shuttle is supposed to take a turn (in an orbit like path), it just rotates around its own axis.
Finally, I used this instead:
void LateUpdate() {
transform.position = Vector3.Lerp(transform.position, shuttle.position + offset, 0.125f);
}
Now, the result is that the shuttle is very shaky. Any solution to this problem?
Does something very simple like this not work? This is in the camera script, not attached to the GameObject.
public GameObject MyShuttle;
void LateUpdate() {
this.transform.position = MyShuttle.transform.position;
}
Found a solution after searching on forums. Since I was using Rigidbody2D to move the shuttle, I had to turn on its Interpolate property from None to Interpolate. The shaking was fixed by this.

I'm trying to make a simple hyper casual. I couldn't understand what's wrong with my codes.
My code:
public class CameraFollow : MonoBehaviour
{
public Transform Target;
public Vector3 offset;
void LateUptade()
{
transform.position = Vector3.Lerp(transform.position, Target.position + offset, Time.deltaTime * 2);
}
}
Two Things to note in your code.
Its LateUpdate and not LateUptade.
In lerp If the third input is 1 the camera will instantly jump to target+offset and if you want the camera to move slowly from its position to target+offse then you need to increase the value of the third input from 0 to 1 every frame.
You can also use Cinemachine to make camera follow player. Check out this Camera follow player tutorial for different ways to make the camera follow player.
Do not put Time.deltaTime in Lerp. The lazy solution is to simply write a constant that is between 0 and 1.
Additionally there is a typo in the function name. It should be LateUpdate and not LateUptade.
transform.position = Vector3.Lerp(transform.position, Target.position + offset, 0.3f);
I'm trying to do a little game on mobile using Unity and I've got a problem with the rotation of a maze.
To add context :
When your moving your finger on the screen, the maze is rotating on himself. There is a ball in it and you need to make it go on a cell to win the level.
When the maze is rotating too fast, the ball falls down and go through the ground and I don't know how to fix it.
I tried to play with the gravity, colliders...
This is the same when the ball is jumping (when the maze is going up and down quickly).
For the moment I just reset the ball position when you're falling.
{
ball.transform.position = new Vector3(0, 2, 0);
maze.transform.position = Vector3.zero;
maze.transform.rotation = Quaternion.identity;
}
Do you guys have some ideas ? Thanks
I had a similar problem in a tilt maze mini-game I worked on. Ideally implementing jkimishere's solution will work but I assume the maze is moving too fast for the collisions to register properly. You'll need to smooth the maze's rotation with a Lerp. In our case we had pressure plates with a tilt value, so it doesn't directly translate to your mobile use but perhaps give you a nudge in the right direction. We used:
public GameObject maze;
private float _lerpTime;
private bool _isRotating;
private Quaternion _startingRot, _desiredRot;
private void Awake()
{
_startingRot = maze.transform.localRotation;
}
private void Update()
{
//Don't want to move the maze if we don't ask for it
if(!_isRotating)
return;
//Lerp the maze's rotation
_lerpTime = Mathf.Clamp(_lerpTime + Time.deltaTime * 0.5f, 0f, 1f);
maze.transform.localRotation = Quaternion.Lerp(_startingRot, _desiredRot, _lerpTime);
//Once the maze gets where it needs to be, stop moving it
if(affectedObject.transform.localRotation.Equals(_desiredRot)
_isRotating = false;
}
private void ActivateTilt()
{
//Set the new starting point of the rotation.
_startingRot = maze.transform.localRotation;
//However you want to calculate the desired rotation here
//Reset our lerp and start rotating again
_lerpTime = 0f;
_isRotating = true;
}
This will ease the rotation of your maze over time. So that the ball can adapt to the new collider positions.
In the rigidbody(for the ball), make the collision detection to continuous, and in the rigidbody for the maze(if you have one) set the collision detection to continuous dynamic. Hope this helps!
I think that is unavoidable if you allow the player to move the platform freely. I suggest you restrain the speed at wich the player can tilt the platform. This way, the ball will have more frames to adapt to the new slope
I have a planet and a player moving on it using gravity. I would like to have a camera to follow the player around it. Using the Parent Constraint component works perfectly, but I want to delay the rotation follow, so I have to use a script. I just cannot figure out how to make it follow it around the globe. I either have a camera that completely freaks out, or a camera that sort of follows the player but doesn't move over the planet and always stays in front of it. And often the position following works, but as soon as I add something that changes rotation it only does that. I've tried many different scripts but nothing works. I'm grateful for any help.
EDIT
I'm sorry for not adding an example. At the moment I've tried this script attached to the camera:
public class CameraFollow : MonoBehaviour
{
public GameObject player;
private Vector3 offset;
void Start()
{
offset = transform.position - player.transform.position;
}
void LateUpdate()
{
transform.rotation = Quaternion.Slerp(transform.rotation, player.transform.rotation, 50f * Time.deltaTime);
transform.position = player.transform.position + offset;
}
The camera does mimic the rotation of the player, but the position isn't being follow correctly anymore. It seems mostly stuck in place, moving only very slightly.
In order to have a camera following a GameObject, you need to go to the camera you want following the GameObject, select Add component, write FollowPlayer, press New script, and then press select and add. Edit the script so it contains the following:
using System.Collections;
using System.Collections.Generic;
using UnityEngine;
public class FollowPlayer : MonoBehaviour
{
public Transform player;
public Vector3 offset;
// Update is called once per frame
void Update()
{
transform.position = player.position + offset;
}
}
Then, you will need to drag and drop the GameObject you want the camera to follow, in the "Player" box.
Define the offset of the camera from the GameObject, and your'e good to go.
I am very new to Unity and just got done yesterday following the Roller Ball example on the learn page here at Unity3d.
To practice what I have learned I wanted to try and recreate something similar using my own art and making the game different. I have been playing around with Voxel Art and I am using MagicaVoxel to create my assests. I created the walls, the ground etc.. and all is well.
Then came the player object, the sphere. I created one as close to a sphere as possible with magicaVoxel and it rolls fine. However, when using a script to have the camera follow the object it runs into issues.
If I don't constrain the Y axis then I will get bouncing and as far as the x and z axis I get kind of a Flat Tire effect. Basically the camera doesn't follow smoothly it bounces around, stop go etc...
I have tried making the collider larger then the sphere and even using the position of the collider vs the object itself. I have also tried putting the code in Update / FixedUpdate / LateUpdate. What is the proper way to fix or address something like this? Here is my scripts below:
Camera Controller:
public class CamController : MonoBehaviour {
public GameObject player;
private Vector3 offset;
void Start ()
{
// Get the distance between the player ball and camera.
offset = this.transform.position - player.transform.position;
}
void LateUpdate ()
{
this.transform.position = player.transform.position + offset;
}
}
Player Controller:
public class PlayerController : MonoBehaviour {
public float _speed;
void FixedUpdate()
{
// Get input from keyboard.
float _hoz = Input.GetAxis("Horizontal");
float _ver = Input.GetAxis("Vertical");
// Create a vector3 based on input from keyboard.
Vector3 _move = new Vector3(_hoz, 0.0f, _ver);
// Apply force to the voxel ball
this.GetComponent<Rigidbody>().AddForce(_move * _speed);
}
}
Thanks for any help in advance.
You can use the SmoothFollow Script of Unity it self for getting smooth follow of camera.
Here are the steps how you can get the script:
1) Assets->Import Package->Scripts.
2) At the dialog that appears select all the scripts, or just the smooth follow one and hit Import button.
3) Now this script is in your project, and you can attach it to the camera.
Hope this will help you...
Best,
Hardik.
I make a character move on the surface of a circle. I let the camera move and rotate follow character. But the camera move and rotate very jerky. If I increase the value of the third parameter, the shock increases. and to reduce the value of the third parameter, the camera does not rotate to keep up the character. Help me fix it
My Code Camera Follow Player
public class CameraFollow : MonoBehaviour
{
public Transform player;
GameController gc;
public float speed = 2;
Vector3 pos = new Vector3 (0, 0, -10);
// Use this for initialization
void Start ()
{
gc = FindObjectOfType (typeof(GameController)) as GameController;
}
void FixedUpdate ()
{
if (gc.gameState == GameController.GameState.playing || gc.gameState == GameController.GameState.changeWave) {
transform.position = player.position + pos;
transform.rotation = Quaternion.Slerp (transform.rotation,
player.transform.rotation,
speed * Time.deltaTime);
}
}
}
Setting the position of a transform inside of FixedUpdate is a red flag for sure, especially when you're reporting that it's "jerky". Fixed update happens at an irregular interval compared to the frames displayed. This is because Physics needs to update using a fixed time step. The reason why this is the case is out of scope for this question.
Long story short, try changing FixedUpdate to Update and that should fix things looking "jerky".
Let me know if this doesn't work and I'll look for other possible causes.
If you are using a Rigidbody2D to move the character, make sure to set its Interpolate property to 'Interpolate'. This should fix it.
