I'm working on a project that has now become complex enough to require navigational help from the IDE. In particular, I need highlighting of the occurrences of variables.
However, I can press the Toggle Mark Occurrences as many times as I want, PDT won't give me that useful functionality on anything, be it variables or functions. According to this (old) question, everything that is needed for that feature to work is correctly configured:
In the preferences (General > Appearance > Editors > Text Editors > Annotations), all annotations types related to "Occurrences" or "PHP" have Overview ruler checked and Text as also checked, with a color set.
In PHP > Editor > Mark Occurrences, every checkbox is checked.
This happens to me both in Neon.3 and in Mars.2: I'm not getting occurrences highlighted in PDT. JDT (Java) works as it should. CDT (tested on C++ code) works too.
Are there additional configuration options that evaded me?
Or is this a bug? I've searched the official Bugzilla and it seems that the highlighting of occurrences has been a recurring regression in Eclipse. It doesn't work either in JSDT (but that's a different issue because JSDT is undergoing an overhaul that caused a slew of regressions).
The same thing happened to me (sometimes still happens to me) but it improved significantly by adding more memory to my computer. It seems to be a functionality that due to the particularities of the php language requires many resources to be computed. I hope my experience will help you.

Just installed a new version of Eclipse ("Eclipse IDE for Enterprise Java Developers", 2019-06 / 4.12.0) and I find that although the hotkeys Ctrl-Shift-C and Ctrl-/ work to toggle comments for blocks of code in .java files, as expected, this doesn't seem to work for my .gradle files for some unaccountable reason.
OS is Linux Mint 18.3.
Anyone know how one goes about tweaking this sort of functionality in Eclipse (i.e. so that this toggling also works in .gradle files)?
NB I also find that going Ctrl-Shift-L twice does NOT open up (as previously) the "preference page" (i.e. where you can edit key bindings). I hope they haven't messed up things here.
However you can still edit these bindings by going Windows --> Preferences --> General --> Keys. This shows no fewer than 20 (!) "Toggle Comment" bindings, with Ctrl+7, Shift+Ctrl+C and Ctrl+/. The "When" column includes things like "Editing Java Source" but also "Editing in Structured Text Editors", etc..
So I tried to add my own key binding with "When" at "Editing Text". No joy. Anyone at all familiar with this aspect of Eclipse functionality?

Therefore what you have to do is install the correct Groovy editor.
I in fact gave the answer about how to do this here in early 2018.
It has changed ever so slightly now (for Eclipse "2019-06"/4.12), as described in my update there.
When you install that Eclipse-Groovy editor it automatically applies the various normal editing functionality not only to .groovy files but also (out of the box) to .gradle files: syntax highlighting, toggling of comments, etc.
I did not think this worked and was about to uninstall it, then I tried selecting Open with > Groovy editor, Thought I would share a little more detail, thanks!
If you start typing when the content assist is activated, content assist will only filter the suggestions based on the starting letters.
However, suppose that there is an object and we need to see if any of its methods contain a specific phrase in any parts of their names (not just checking if they start with that phrase).
Is there any way to configure the content assist or is there any plugin out there to provide that functionality for Eclipse?
The Eclipse Code Recommenders project includes subwords completion which seems to be exactly what you are looking for.
Keep in mind that with the upcoming 2.1 release (together with Eclipse Luna on the 25th of June, 2014), the subwords completion is no longer activated by default. Go to Preferences > Code Recommenders > Completions and activate the Subwords-Completion Processor.
I wanted to transfer my Syntax coloring settings from my Eclipse EE to my Eclipse for Android, so I did what is told in this question. The problem is that, even if my syntax coloring did apply correctly, I lost all my code completion and proposals (and, conveniently enough, I didn't make a backup)! If I press ctrl + space, I get a No default proposals message. Always.
I wouldn't like to have to install the whole IDE again, so if someone could provide a solution to this it would be much appreciated.
Preferences > Java > Editor > Content Assist > Advanced lists the default content assist proposals. Check that some proposals are actually enabled.
Is it possible to make the code-completion on Netbeans automatic, like on Aptana or Visual Studio?
I've noticed that Netbeans can sometimes take a while to populate the list, so this might be asking a bit too much, but if possible, I'd like to somehow enable it.
The onlything I've found in the options is the ability to set a custom key-combo, but not to make this automatic.
I know that if you wait a bit, the auto-completion shows up anyway, but I want it to be without delay.
It appears there is a setting in some NetBeans versions that sets the delay for the popup window.

The problem is that this article is a couple years old, so I opened NetBeans (6.1) on my computer and looked for the property but it didn't exist for the Java Editor (It did for other editors like the XML Editor). This leads me to believe my version is newer than the one in the article and the delay property no longer exists for the Java Editor (checking couldn't hurt though).
So instead, I decided to test the delay. I made a sample project, imported and instantiated a list, and then went to call a method. I stopped at the dot to let NetBeans offer suggestions and it was basically immediate (no noticeable delay). It is at this point, I am wondering if the delay you are experiencing is due purely to performance of the computer, especially since you indicate this occurs "sometimes". It is possible that you are looking at rather large classes, and NetBeans is taking extra time to look up the completions. You could try and test to see if this is true or not by testing code completion on a known large class. The other possibility is your computer is not as fast, or is doing work for another program at the same time. You can try and test this by restarting the computer, opening only NetBeans (to maximize resources to NetBeans), and try some code completions. If either exhibit noticeably faster delays, this is most likely the problem.

I think I found a solution. I set up autocomplete keyboard shortcuts for all letters and #, it seems to work. In some cases there is a small lag, but it doesn't prevent you from typing. It took about 5 minutes to add those shortcuts.
I tried to get the desired feature by adding the alphabet to the completion selectors. It worked somewhat, you can always try it.

The question is a bit old, but let me add a different approach. In addition to the above hot-key and utility approaches, there are default preference settings that can be toggled.
As of Eclipse Galileo (and definitely in my Eclipse Version: Indigo Service Release 2 Build id: 20120216-1857) language specific preferences can open up new files to edit which are already collapsed or expanded.

In my Eclipse Indigo I can open the Folding Preferences window via : menu/ Window/ Preferences/ Java/ Editor/ Folding and set all options on so I can open files by default that are completely collapsed.
Amongst other things, Mylyn allows you to fold/hide content and persist the state.
Mylyn monitors your work activity to identify relevant information, and uses this task context to focus the user interface on the task-at-hand. This puts the information you need at your fingertips and improves productivity by reducing searching, scrolling, and navigation. By making task context explicit Mylyn also facilitates multitasking, planning, reusing past efforts, and sharing expertise.
Once Mylyn is enabled it will start folding/hiding the content. If you have an active task (can use a local task repository) the state should be persisted between sessions. Alternatively you can attach the state to the task (sorry don't have Eclipse to hand to check the exact method to do this) then retrieve it. This is useful if you are sharing tasks with others.

This, and plenty other issues of Eclipse made me switch to JetBrains IntelliJ IDEA. It's worth sneaking a peek at it if you find Eclipse's performance annoying, need more control on your code formatting or if you just want to have your code foldings persisted.
