Does ADFS use kerberos? - kerberos

Currently looking to federate servers that use AD. First thought was to use ADFS to manage service requests across domains and realms. That being said the application must have access to Kerberos tickets for a specific use case.
Does AD FS use Kerberos at any point or is it it's own totally redesigned ticketing system? If so can you create a hybrid application that can authenticate using ADFS and request tickets using Kerberos?

ADFS simply provides a federation service on top of AD i.e. support for protocols like WS-Fed and SAML.
The Kerberos protocol remains part of AD.
Once authenticated ADFS provides either a SAML 1.1 or 2.0 token that contains the claims.

SPA webapp SSO federation

I have an SPA web app using openidconnect for authentication and authorization with local keycloak.
This app is now moving to an windows onprem infrastructure using AD, kerberos tickets and a central SSO.
users log in in their windows session, and then we shall be able to transparently login in our SPA web app. (ie with out entering credentials)
How can I convert kerberos ticket/authentication into Openidconnect world? Where is the magic?
Shall we add some kerberos in our app?
how can we retrieve our access token containing the user role?

Your SPA should continue to talk to Keycloak using OIDC, and no code in the SPA should need to change. Your APIs will also continue to receive the same access tokens.
You should only need to configure Keycloak to use AD for authentication as an LDAP data source. Here is an article on how to do that. It is an infrastructure job rather than just a coding one, so I would recommend collaboration with AD administrators on the environment setup.
AD is only one possible authentication method, and by doing things this way you keep your options open. You are likely to need to perform account linking, eg to identify users the same before and after the migration. There may be some data setup involved here, eg ensure AD has the same emails as the existing system.

Local Identity based login along with saml 2.0 SSO

There is an existing mechanism to log into a website. Now, external / remote SAML IDP is being added to facilitate SSO. The website uses other micro-services and components that provide data and functionality to the website.
Is there a way to have an existing mechanism of local identity username password credentials to continue to co-exist as an alternate strategy for authentication alongside remote IDP SSO while keeping rest of the services handling authorization in a semantic way (using a saml token)?
P.S. I looked at the options to implement existing auth mechanism as saml IDP, but building it seems complex even with the likes of shibboleth or openSAML libraries.
P.P.S. I haven't looked at possibility of reimplementing existing auth mechanism with openId connect to co-exist with remote saml idps.
Sure: one can provide a landing page to the user that gives a choice between using a local account or an account at a remote IDP.

Trusting External organization ADFS server and consuming openid Connect token

ADFS server 2016 supports openId connect. I have external organization that hosts ADFS server , I want my web application to get authenticated from External ADFS server using openIdConnect .
Question : As per Microsoft docs . If we want to consume external organization's ADFS we should host ADFS in our organization also. My application should trust ADFS hosted inside my organization ,instead of trusting external ADFS directly.
Here I want to know why we cannot directly trust External ADFS using opendiconnect ? It seems possible. what is reason of not trusting external ADFS directly?
Both models work. If your application plans to have users from multiple organizations, it is better to have your app trust an internal org ADFS which can then be federated to multiple of these organizations with simple configuration changes. This makes the application simpler where it is dealing with only one IDP. An additional advantage for having an internal ADFS is that any authentication policy changes can be managed fully at internal ADFS layer and not potentially requiring application changes.
However, if your application is only going to support one external organization, you can do this directly in the application. Both models work for this.

Configuring Ping Federate and Spring SAML to authenticate application

I installed PingFederate on an AWS EC2 running Windows_Server-2008-R2_SP1-English-64Bit-Base-2014.04.09. I have a Java application that is using Spring Security for authentication.
I have read about how with PingFederate, I can set up an Identity Provider(IdP) and a Service Provider(SP). I have gathered that the IdP would be the Application User providing login credentials(the Identity) and passing this to the SP which has the Target Application apart of the SP in this diagram on this page here:

This image also shows the Federated Identity Software on both sides of the IdP and the SP.
I have created an IdP and SP with my local PingFederate server just to see what the configuration options are and I am confused on which parts of this I actually need to be able to have a SSO for my Spring Security application.
My questions are:
Do I need an IdP and SP to implement that I am trying to do.
Right now our usernames and passwords are stored in a SQL Server, would I leverage this for PingFederate to use to authenticate the users?
Should I even be using Spring Security SAML for this or would another route be more appropriate?

I also apologize if I am completely off in my thinking, I am trying to wrap my mind around what is needed.
Presuming your goal is to establish federation between Ping and your application (in order to e.g. externalize authentication or enable single sign-on), your thinking is correct.
The Ping Federate serves as an Identity Provider (IDP) and you can configure it to connect to your SQL server, so that it can authenticate your existing users from there. IDP communicates with other applications which are called Service Providers (SP).
In order to connect to Ping your application therefore needs to be able to act as a SAML 2.0 Service Provider and using Spring SAML is a very good way to enable it to do so.
The typical flow of data between SP and IDP for single sign-on is similar to:
User accesses SP application which requires authentication
SP creates an AuthenticationRequest and sends it to IDP (using redirect in user's browser)
IDP processes the request and authenticates the user
IDP responds back to SP with an AuthenticationResponse message
SP processes the response and creates a session for the user based on the included data
There is an assumption being made that you need SAML between your Spring app and PingFederate. That is not true depending on how it is deployed and if you (see Andy K follow-up questions). You should check out the OpenToken Integration Kit for Java or perhaps the ReferenceID Int Kit from Ping as a possible solution. Much simpler to integrate than trying to hack together another SAML solution that may not be needed. However, I would recommend talking to your RSA who can give you the best approach for your scenario.

WIF using SAML 2 protocol / Federate AD FS 2.0 with CAS

I'am are trying to implement a Web SSO with claim based identity using WIF and AD FS 2.0 right now. Right now I have a existing ASP.Net application which delegates authentification to the AD FS 2.0 server and trust issued security tokens. That works just fine.
However, in the organization there is an existing JA-SIG Central Authentication Service (CAS) server which supports the SAML 2 protocol. I would like to replace AD FS 2.0 with the existing CAS service.
In my understanding WIF uses WS-Federation, which is like a container around a SAML token. Is it possible to use the plain SAML 2 protocol and it's bindings (redirect or POST)? If that is not possible (as I guess), a second alternative might be to use federate identity and federate AD FS 2.0 with CAS. Is that possible? There is little to no information about that on the web.

After some research I came up with the following issues. CAS 3.x supports SAML 1.1 tokens and the SAML 1.1 protocol including Web SSO. There is support for SAML 1.1/2.0 tokens in ADFS 2.0. However, only the SAML 2.0 protocol is supported. That means no out of the box federation between CAS and ADFS 2.0 is possible.
We are researching OpenSSO as an alternative now, which provides support for all necessary protocols including WS-Federation for attaching WIF clients.
Access control Service v2 (ACS v2) may be an option. It supports both SAML1.1 and 2.0 as well in addition to other ones like simple web token (SWT) etc. It then allows to translate tokens from the source system to the relying party format..
