I have setup a sample Kafka cluster on AWS and am trying to identify maximum throughput possible with the given configurations. I am currently following post provided here for this analysis.

I would appreciate it if you could clarify the following issues.
I observed a throughput of 40MB/s for messages of size 512 bytes ( single producer - single consumer ) with given hardware. Assume I need to achieve a throughput of 80MB/s.
As I understand one way to do this to increase the number of partitions per topic and increase the number of threads in producer and consumer. ( Assuming I do not change the default values for batch size, compression ratio etc. )
How to find the maximum throughput possible with given hardware? The point after which we are required to improve our hardware resources if we are to further improve the throughput?
( In other words how to make the decision "With X GB RAM and Y GB disk space this is the maximum throughput I can achieve. If I need to further improve the throughput I have to upgrade RAM to XX GB and disk space to YY GB" )
2.Should we scale the cluster vertically or horizontally? What is the recommended approach?

If we define throughput as the volume of data transmitted over the network per second, the maximum throughput should not exceed #machine number * bandwidth. Given a single machine whose NIC is configured with 1Gbps, the max TPS on single machine cannot be larger than 1Gbps. In your case, TPS is 40MB/s, namely 320Mbps,which is quite less than 1Gbps, meaning there is still room for improvement. However, if your target is far larger than 1Gbps, you definitely need more machines.
AFAIK, bandwidth is the most likely cause for the system bottleneck. Unlike CPU and RAM, it's not easy to scale vertically, so a horizontally scaling might be an option.
You could do some maths before scaling. Say the throughput target is "produce 2 billion of records with 512Bytes in 1 hour". That's to say, the TPS has to achieve 2,000,000,000 * 8 * 512 / 3600 / 1024 / 1024 = 2170mbps. Assuming available bandwidth for single machine is 700mbps(Over 70% usage normally brings 'packet loss'), at least 4 machines should be planned for the producer application.

As far as I have learned from all the relevant articles about NVMe SSDs, one of NVMe SSDs' benefits is multiple queues. Leveraging multiple NVMe I/O queues, NVMe bandwidth can be greatly utilized.
However, what I have found from my own experiment does not agree with that.
I want to do parallel 4k-granularity sequential reads from an NVMe SSD. I'm using Samsung 970 EVO Plus 250GB. I used FIO to benchmark the SSD. The command I used is:
fio --size=1000m --directory=/home/xxx/fio_test/ --ioengine=libaio --direct=1 --name=4kseqread --bs=4k --iodepth=64 --rw=read --numjobs 1/2/4 --group_reporting
And below is what I got testing 1/2/4 parallel sequential reads:
numjobs=1: 1008.7MB/s
numjobs=2: 927 MB/s
numjobs=4: 580 MB/s
Even if will not increasing bandwidth, I expect increasing I/O queues would at least keep the same bandwidth as the single-queue performance. The bandwidth decrease is a little bit counter-intuitive. What are the possible reasons for the decrease?

I would like to highlight 3 reasons why you may see the issue:
Effective Queue Depth is too high,
Capacity under the test is limited to 1GB only,
Drive Precondition
First, parameter --iodepth=X is specified per Job. It means in your last experiment (--iodepth=64 and --numjobs=4) effective Queue Depth is 4x64=256. This may be too high for your Drive. Based on the vendor specification of your 250GB Drive, 4KB Random Read should show 250 KIOPS (1GB/s) for the Queue Depth of 32. By this Vendor is stating that QD32 is quite optimal for your Drive operation in order to reach best performance. If we start to increase QD, then commands will start aggregating and waiting in the Submission Queue. It does not improve performance. Vice Versa it will start to eat system resources (CPU, memory) and will degrade the throughput.
Second, limiting capacity under test to such a small range (1GB) can cause lot of collisions inside SSD. It is the situation when Reads will hit the same Media Physical Read Unit (aka Die aka LUN). In such situation new Reads will have to wait for previous one to complete. Increase of the testing capacity to entire Drive or at least to 50-100GB should minimize the collisions.
Third, in order to get performance numbers as per specification, Drive needs to be preconditioned accordingly. For the case of measuring Sequential and Random Reads it is better to use Full Drive Sequential Precondition. Command bellow will perform 128KB Sequential Write at QD32 to the Entire Drive Capacity.

Let's see we have a file system with FAT10 and a disk size of 1 GB.
I'd like to know how I can calculate the minimum size of a cluster?
My current approach looks like this: FAT10 means we have 2^10 clusters. Since the disk size is 1 GB which equals 2^30 bytes, we have 2^(30-10) = 2^20 bytes for each cluster.
Which means the minimum cluster size is 2^20 bytes ?
I hope this is the correct place to ask, otherwise tell me and I will delete this question! :c
It really depends on what your goals are.
Technically, the minimum cluster size is going to be 1 sector. However, this means that the vast majority of the 1 GB will not likely be accessible by the FAT10 system.
If you want to be able to access almost the whole 1 GB disk with the FAT10, then your calculation serves as a reasonable approximation. In fact due to practical constraints, you're probably not going to get much better unless you decide to start making some more unorthodox decisions (I would argue using a FAT10 system on a 1 GB drive is already unorthodox).
Here are some of the things you will need to know.
How many of the theoretical 1024 FAT values are usable? Remember, some have special meaning such as "cluster available", "end of cluster chain", "bad block (if applicable)" or "reserved value (if applicable)"
Does your on-disk FAT10 table reserve its space by count of sectors or count of clusters?
What is your sector size?
Are there any extra reserved sectors or clusters?
Is your data section going to be sector or cluster aligned?
Are you going to limit your cluster size to a power of two?
Horizontal scaling means that we scale by adding more machines into the pool of resources. Still, there is a choice of how much power (CPU, RAM) each node in the cluster will have.
When cluster managed with Kubernetes it is extremely easy to set any CPU and memory limit for Pods. How to choose the optimal CPU and memory size for cluster nodes (or Pods in Kubernetes)?
For example, there are 3 nodes in a cluster with 1 vCPU and 1GB RAM each. To handle more load there are 2 options:
Add the 4th node with 1 vCPU and 1GB RAM
Add to each of the 3 nodes more power (e.g. 2 vCPU and 2GB RAM)
A straightforward solution is to calculate the throughput and cost of each option and choose the cheaper one. Are there any more advanced approaches for choosing the compute resources of the nodes in a cluster with horizontal scalability?
For this particular example I would go for 2x vCPU instead of another 1vCPU node, but that is mainly cause I believe running OS for anything serious on a single vCPU is just wrong. System to behave decently needs 2+ cores available, otherwise it's too easy to overwhelm that one vCPU and send the node into dust. There is no ideal algorithm for this though. It will depend on your budget, on characteristics of your workloads etc.
As a rule of thumb, don't stick to too small instances as you have a bunch of stuff that has to run on them always, regardless of their size and the more node, the more overhead. 3x 4vCpu+16/32GB RAM sounds like nice plan for starters, but again... it depends on what you want, need and can afford.
The answer is related to such performance metrics as latency and throughput:
Latency is a time interval between sending request and receiving response.
Throughput is a request processing rate (requests per second).
Latency has influence on throughput: bigger latency = less throughput.
If a business transaction consists of multiple sequential calls of the services that can't be parallelized, then compute resources (CPU and memory) has to be chosen based on the desired latency value. Adding more instances of the services (horizontal scaling) will not have any positive influence on the latency in this case.
Adding more instances of the service increases throughput allowing to process more requests in parallel (if there are no bottlenecks).
In other words, allocate CPU and memory resources so that service has desired response time and add more service instances (scale horizontally) to handle more requests in parallel.
What is the max throughput of kafka in MB/second.
I am trying to send messages of size 2MB each and get a throughput of about 30 records per second (i.e. 60 MB/second)
I wanted to check what was the theoretical max throughput that could be reached.
Kafka is usually network bound -- so it depends on your hardware. Theoretical max for 1Gbit Ethernet would be 125MB/sec.

I have 1 master and 3 slaves(4 cores each)
By Default the min partition size in my spark cluster is 32MB and my file size is 41 Gb.
So i am trying to reduce the number of partitions by changing the minsize to 64Mb

So what are the advantages of increasing the partition size and reducing the number of partitions.
Because when my partitions are around 1314 it took around 2-3min appx and even after reducing the partition count, it is still taking same amount of time.
The more partitions the more overhead, but to some extend it helps with performance as you can run all of them in parallel.
So, on one hand it makes sense to keep number of partitions equal to number of cores. On the other it might happen specific partition size lead to specific amount of garbage in the JVM, which might overhead the limit. In this case you'd like to increase number of partitions to reduce memory footprint of each of them.
It might also depend on the workflow. Consider groupByKey vs reduceByKey. In the latter case you can compute a lot locally and send just a little to remote node. Shuffles happen to be written to disk before being sent to remote, thus having more partitions might reduce performance.
It is also true that there is some overhead come along with each partition.
In case you'd like to share cluster with several people, then you might consider approach to take somewhat less number of partitions to process everything, so that all of the users would have some processing time.
