How can I restrict the number of lines displayed in my report? I display the field emp_desc using this query:
select emp_desc from emp where emp_name in ('roger','harper','john').
The output of this query returns 3 rows, and each row when printed takes 2 lines -
for a total of 6. But I want to display only 5 lines, and ignore the 6th and final line. How can I accomplish this?
Try this on the field who receives the query.
Right click on it > Format Object > Common > and mark the checkbox "Can grow"
you can specify the number of lines if you want too.
Without a screenshot, or at least knowing what your data looks like when it's returned, we can only guess. But it sounds like you want to change the format of every 3rd row to be shorter. This can be accomplished with this pseudocode formula:
IF RECORDNUMBER MOD 3 = 2 THEN
'Display a shortened version of your data
ELSE
'Display your data normally

So to summarize: one value is every time equal to the name of a column and to find the column shall be the if-structure

Step-1: Connected With data in tableau. Clicked all columns having price (4 here), pivoted them so that they look like this..
Step_2: Create calculated_field like this
if [Barcode] = [Barcode_c]
then [Price] END
Step3: Filtered out null values from calculatedField and got a view like this which can be tweaked as per liking.
I have a table that displays 8 columns. Due to the way the data source is structured (I cannot change this) it sometimes means one or more of the columns will be the same across two rows.
I need to filter to show only one row of data. This is based on "email', so if an email has more than 1 row, I want one of the rows. If the other columns are the same or not doesn't matter.
I don't need to combine anything, and I don't care which row is displayed, I just need to remove one of the duplicated rows.
Replace this:
Place orderid email item name date
a 1 a#a.com b c 1/1/11
a 1 a#a.com d c 1/1/11
With this:
Place orderid email item name date
a 1 a#a.com b c 1/1/11
Or this:

Any help would be much appreciated! I had a go with LOD calculations and I couldn't make that do what I wanted (that may well be me not understanding how to use them properly, though).
Given your example, it appears the difference is within the [item] field. You can create an index calculation on it and filter for value of 1.
index()
Set the index to discrete and compute using the [item] and filter for only 1. You can hide the field if you don't want it to appear by deselecting Show Header.
If you want to show the first row per email, regardless of what's in the other fields, try the following:
Create an [Index] calc field using INDEX().
Add [Index] to rows shelf and change to discrete.
Edit the table calc for [Index], select 'Specific Dimensions' and restarting every email (dropdown menu). All of the checkboxes should be ticked by default.
Notice how the index is not restarting for each email as expected. To correct this, drag email checkbox to the top position.
From here, filter [Index] = 1 and hide index column from view.
I am trying to set up a Crystal Report to generate pallet labels which include a "Pallet N of M" line on each page.
The order in the database only has one entry, which contains all of the other information for the label(s). My issue is that the number of pallets isn't known until print time, and each label needs the same order information as well as a pallet ID. What I am looking for is for the user to enter a parameter for the total number of pallets, then have Crystal generate the correct number of unique labels.
For example, if the order has 4 pallets then Crystal should generate 4 copies of the label, the only difference on each copy being the last line which should read 'Pallet 1 of 4', 'Pallet 2 of 4', 'Pallet 3 of 4', and 'Pallet 4 of 4' respectively.
The only solution I can think of would be to create a number of sections equal to the maximum number of pallets, all containing my real data as a sub-report, then suppress any which are greater than the entered parameter. I am trying to avoid this because we may have greater than 50 pallets on a given order, so that would be tedious to create and is just not a very clean solution.

Big thanks to Aliqux for the solution. In the end I needed to change the syntax to be Oracle compatible and also include the LINKVALUE field in the report, but the answer was 99% there especially considering I had not mentioned that my datasource was Oracle. The Command syntax I ended up using (with my parameter called TotalPallets) was:
SELECT

FROM table
WHERE rownum <= {?TotalPallets}
You will need to Add a command to your tables.
1) Under database Expert in the Database you used select Add Command.
2) Click create to Create a Parameter.
3) Create the requested values, you can leave the Default Value blank if you want, and change the Value Type to Number. (I will be calling my parameter Counter)
4) Put the following in the SQL query where table is the main table you are using
SELECT TOP {?Counter}
-1 AS LINKVALUE
FROM table
5) Click okay and enter a value if prompted
6) In links link a number field, that will never go into negative numbers as we are using -1 for a base, to the LINKVALUE in the Command Table.
7)Link Options are as followed
Join Type: Inner Join, Enforce Join: Not Enforced, Link Type: !=
8) In your report create a formula with a shared numbervalue the starts from one.
shared numbervar counters;
if counters = {?Counter} then counters := 0;
counters := counters + 1
9) You can use that formula and the Counter Parameter for your labels

I've made a crosstab in crystal report like below:
However, as you can see, the ordering is weirld (i.e. the correct one should be like below:)
And the ordering is stored in another field called order, I took a look in the crystal report's cross-tab expert sorting option, it doesn't allow me to order by another column, it only allows me to sort either ascending or descending, how can I set the ordering by another column?
Crosstab's sorting is based on the rows order, if you want to sort it in your on you have to add some extra rows and have to suppress subtotal and Label in Customize Style of Crosstab Expert
Example:
If you have 3 rows(A,B,C) to display and you have to sort it in order like B,C,A then you have to add 2 new rows(B,C) now your Crosstab looks like (B,C,A,B,C) now you have to suppress Rows B and C you meet your both requirements for sorting and display order
But This solution have some limitations like
if you want to export the report in Excel then it will add extra cells in grand total.
otherwise you are good to go.

Yes, you can not sort on another column. You must use any of one column as a header.
In Crystal report, sorting happened based on header column's value (That's why you see as per alphabetic).
I also face this issue and how I solved, that I am explain. You have to use a formula which have order, but either hide it or use a value like in this link.

open crosstab expert, highlight the column that you want to reorder, go to Group Options and select in specified order. This will open another tab where you will have your available values listed there. Using the arrows on the right side you can move up or down your values and accommodate them in the order you want them to be displayed.
Simple way would be take order column from stored procedure to cross tab and set the order according to that column.
Then supress the order column and reduce the width of that column to minimum pixel so that it doesn't appear in cross tab.
Make the field you want to sort by a group field and hide it. To hide it, in the Crosstab Expert > Customize Style dialog select this group then use the Group Options area to Suppress Subtotal and Supress Label. Worked for me.
Use the order field as the grouping column and change the label for said column to show the actual sizes. The labels can be changed in Crosstab Expert, Grouping Options and then the tab Options.
Below, I've attached a sample of my data as well as a sample of the chart output. I want to aggregate the data and include one row with this number; however, SSRS is just showing multiple of the same value.
In the example below, you'll notice there are 8 rows in Unit 1 and 8 rows in Unit 2, a
total of 13. How can I get Unit 1 to have one row which shows 8 and one row in Unit 2 to show 5? Currently, the expression is =COUNT(Fields!SubID.Value, "DataSet1").
I've also tried adding in a column full of the number 1 which I could use to Sum on, but that produced the same results.
Originally I was doing this all in SQL; that is, producing the exact output I want in SQL and then charting in SSRS. However, this is no longer a viable solution as the end user would like to be able to drill down into the details of the report. I do imagine, if there is no easy way to do this (which I feel like there has to be), that I could write two queries, having one show the report and the other show the details.

The second parameter of your count expression is the problem.
Don't use this:
=COUNT(Fields!SubID.Value, "DataSet1")
Try something like this instead:
=COUNT(Fields!SubID.Value, "UnitGroupName")
The group name should match what is shown in BIDS as the name you've given the grouping, such as under Row Groups.
