Problems connecting to Postgresql server? - postgresql

I am running a Postgresql server hosted on heroku as part of an app I am developing. I've been using PGAdmin as a frontend to set up my tables and also check to make sure the app is correctly writing data to the tables. When I am at home it connects fine and I can use it with no problems. It also works when I tether to my phone's WiFi hotspot. However when I am in university on the WiFi it does not connect. I get the following error:
"could not connect to server: Connection timed out (0x0000274C/10060) Is the server
running on host <MY HOSTNAME> and accepting TCP/IP connections on port 5432?"
I'm trying to troubleshoot this. I tried the obvious things like checking my hostname and port are correct (they are, because it works from home!) and checking that Pgadmin has permissions in windows firewall (it does). Not sure what to try next.
Is it likely to be that the port is blocked? I used an online port checker which reported that the port (5432) was closed, however it also says this when using my phone's wifi hotspot (which normally works, as I said). Is there another port I can use with Postgresql?

OK, it turns out the port 5432 was actually closed on my university's WiFi. I was able to request that it be opened, and everything is now working.

App smith connectivity with local database

I have had an issue accessing the local database from Appsmith(docker container or signup from their website https://www.appsmith.com/).
I couldn't connect to my local database.
It sometimes says it can't connect to the specified localhost:5432 and asks me to "Failed to initialise pool. Check that the hostname and port are correct and that the postmaster is accepting TCP/IP connections" How to solve this?

pgAdmin 4. Unable to connect to server

I had a postgreSQL server/database working in a local area network in Windows. To have access to it through Ethernet I changed the IP in the router settings. Everything was fine. But when I came today to the office, I could not have connected to the server. Moreover, I cannot even create a localhost server on that PC. The error is "Unable to connect to server:" and nothing else. When I turn off the postgres in services it specifies the error with TCP/IP, port, etc. But not when the service is on. When connecting to the server, the pgAdmin asks for the postgres password. Endlessly, thou the password is printed correctly and the METHOD is set to trust. The reinstallation did not help.
What does this error mean? And what is the cure?

PostgreSQL error: 'Address already in use 0x00002740/10048'

I'm running an application in a high traffic production environment in a PostgreSQL database. I have about 850-900 open connections at a time. Every day I get some errors from end users:
Could not connect to server: Address already in use (0x00002740/10084)
Is the server running on host "XXXXXXXX" and accepting TCP/IP
connections on port 5432?
When they try again they are able to open the connection.
This application is running at other clients too. Open connections there are lower and I don't have the issue there.
I'm not using PgBouncer.
Can somebody point me in the right direction?

Is there any issue using the same postgresql database for two different servers?

I am using postgres database which is accessed by jboss and tomcat server.
My server accidentally restarted and then postgres service was not showing in the services list.
When I tried to open postgres local host server using pgadminIII it showed following error:
Server doesn't listen
The server doesn't accept connections: the connection library reports

If you encounter this message, please check if the server you're trying to contact is actually running PostgreSQL on the given port. Test if you have network connectivity from your client to the server host using ping or equivalent tools. Is your network / VPN / SSH tunnel / firewall configured correctly?
For security reasons, PostgreSQL does not listen on all available IP addresses on the server machine initially. In order to access the server over the network, you need to enable listening on the address first.
For PostgreSQL servers starting with version 8.0, this is controlled using the "listen_addresses" parameter in the postgresql.conf file. Here, you can enter a list of IP addresses the server should listen on, or simply use '*' to listen on all available IP addresses. For earlier servers (Version 7.3 or 7.4), you'll need to set the "tcpip_socket" parameter to 'true'.
You can use the postgresql.conf editor that is built into pgAdmin III to edit the postgresql.conf configuration file. After changing this file, you need to restart the server process to make the setting effective.
If you double-checked your configuration but still get this error message, it's still unlikely that you encounter a fatal PostgreSQL misbehaviour. You probably have some low level network connectivity problems (e.g. firewall configuration). Please check this thoroughly before reporting a bug to the PostgreSQL community.

You can't connect because it's not running. You can have as many clients connecting to a PostgreSQL server as your hardware can support - there is no problem with that.
Restart your PostgreSQL service. If it won't, check the logs for why. If you don't know where your PostgreSQL logs are now is a good time to find out. I can't tell you how to restart the service because you haven't said what OS you are running or how you installed PG. Check your documentation.

pgAdmin and PostgreSQL: can't connect to server

I just installed PostgreSQL on Snow Leopard and can't connect to the database server via pgAdmin 3.
I'm on my local machine, however I keep getting this error:
Could not connect to server: connection refused. Is the server running on host "localhost" (127.0.0.1) and accepting TCP/IP connections on port 5423?
I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to Postgres, so I'm not really sure what the problem is.
I can, however, log in through the command line, via psql -U postgres, and start and stop the server successfully.
Any help would be much appreciated.
The error message pointed out that you tried to connect to server on port 5423. However, postgres server listens on 5432 by default.
From your above comment (SHOW port; gives me "5432"), I think you need to change the port to 5432!
UPDATE: Tuan Dang spotted it. I'll leave this answer in place in case it helps someone else for whom the issue isn't quite the same.
Since you can connect via the command line, run:
SHOW port;
from psql. You'll probably see that the port is not 5432. You need to connect to the port PostgreSQL is actually running on from your application.
It's also possible that it just isn't listening on TCP/IP. Run:
SHOW listen_addresses;
to see what it's listening for.
The reason you can connect via the command line is likely to be because the command line psql you're using is connecting over a unix socket (since you didn't specify a host) and your app is connecting via tcp/ip.
