PostgreSQL Trigger Copy New Row into other Table - postgresql

I have a problem I am stuck on for some time now. So I wanted to reach out for a little help.
I have 2 tables which are holding the same data: transactions and transactions2.
I want to write a Trigger that is triggering every time a new row is added to transactions and insert it into transaction2 in PLSQL.
First I simply duplicated the table with
CREATE TABLE transactions2 (SELECT * FROM transactions WHERE 1=1);
I think I found out how to insert
CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION copyRow RETURNS TRIGGER AS $$
DECLARE
BEGIN
INSERT INTO transaction2
VALUES transaction;
END;
I think the syntax with this is also wrong, but how do I say, that the Trigger should start as soon as a new Insert into the first table is made?
Can anyone help me with this?

The correct syntax for an INSERT is INSERT (<column list>) VALUES (<values list>). The INSERT syntax isn't different in a function compared to "outside". So your trigger function should look something like:
CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION t2t2_f ()
RETURNS TRIGGER
AS
$$
BEGIN
INSERT INTO transactions2
(column_1,
...,
column_n)
VALUES (NEW.column_1,
...,
NEW.column_n);
RETURN NEW;
END;
$$
LANGUAGE plpgsql;
Replace the column_is with the actual column names of your table. NEW is a pseudo record with which you can access the values of the new row.
To create the trigger itself use something like:
CREATE TRIGGER t2t2_t
AFTER INSERT
ON transactions
FOR EACH ROW
EXECUTE PROCEDURE t2t2_f();
You may want to use another timing, e.g. BEFORE instead of AFTER.

Create Trigger to get hourly difference between timestamps

I have a table where I would like to calculate the difference in time (in hours) between two columns after inserting a row. I would like to set up a trigger to do this whenever an insert or update is performed on the table.
My columns are delay_start, delay_stop, and delay_duration. I would like to do the following:
delay_duration = delay_stop - delay_start
The result should be of numeric (4,2) value and go into the delay_duration category. Below is what I have so far, but it will not populate the column for some reason.

VALUES(DATEDIFF(hh, delay_stop, delay_start));
RETURN NEW;

I am quite new to all of this so if anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it!
If you have Postgres 12 or later you can define delay_duration as a generated column. This allows you to eliminate triggers.

Changes:
Before trigger instead of after. A before trigger can modify the
values in a column without additional DML statements, an after
trigger cannot. Issuing a DML statement on a table within a trigger
on that same table can lead to all types of problems. It is bast
avoided if possible.
Trigger name and function name not the same. Might just be me but I
do not like different things having the same name. Although it works
often leads to confusion. Always avoid confusion if possible.
Trigger fires on update of delay_start. An update of either delay_start or delay_end also updates delay_duration.

Alter PostreSQL column into a GENERATED ALWAYS column

I have an already made table:
cotizacion(idCot(PK), unit_price,unit_price_taxes)
I need to convert unit_price_taxes into a generated column that is equal to unit_price*1.16. The issue is I can't find the alter table statement which will give me this. Dropping table and creating it again is not an option as this table is already deeply linked with the rest of the database and reinserting all records is not an option at this point.
I tried the following:
ALTER TABLE cotizacion
alter column unit_price_taxes set
GENERATED ALWAYS AS (unit_price*1.16) STORED;
But it's not working. Does anybody know how to get this done or if it's even possible? I would like to avoid creating a new column.

The most probable reason for your trigger to go into an infinite recursion is that you are running an UPDATE statement inside the trigger - which is the wrong thing to do. Create a before trigger and assign the calculated value to the new record:
create trigger update_tax()
returns trigger

new.unit_price_taxes := unit_price * 1.16;
return new;

create trigger update_tax_trigger()
before update or insert on cotizacion
for each row execute procedure update_tax();
The only way to "convert" that column to a generated one, is to drop it and add it again:
alter table cotizacion
drop unit_price_taxes;
alter table cotizacion
add unit_price_taxes numeric generated always as (unit_price*1.16) stored;
Note that this will rewrite the entire table which will block access to it. Adding the trigger will be less invasive.

postgres trigger function only inserts few records in another table

I have 2 tables hourly and daily and my aim is to calculate average of values from hourly table and save it to daily table. I have written a trigger function like this -

and a trigger on hourly table like this -

But when I try to insert or update about 3000 records in the hourly table only 3 or 4 devices are inserted and not 3000. (also in trigger I have already tried AFTER INSERT OR UPDATE but even that gives the same result) What I am doing wrong here? Please suggest any better way to write the trigger if you feel I have written it wrongly. Thanks!
I don't suggest using TRIGGER for calculation when INSERT. Try different approach using function execute by cron hourly or daily.
WHY?
Because everytime you INSERT one row. the postgres will always do aggregate function AVG() and LOOPING for insert (based on your flow).
That mean another INSERT statement will waiting until Previous INSERT commited that will suffer your database performance for highly INSERT Transaction. If somehow you manage to BREAK the rule (maybe from configuration) you will get inconsistent data like what happened to you right now.

How to create a Trigger in PostgreSql?

TRIGEER-->To get a column value from one table to other table when i insert values?
I am having two tables(customer_details and loan_balance).
What i need is, I must get the column (custid)of customer_details table to the loan_balance table when i insert the data into the loan_balance table.

So i need a trigger to be raised and the data should be updated automatically without dynamic insertion of custid.
Postgres has an unconventional way of creating triggers:
create a function that returns type trigger and return the NEW row record
create a trigger that executes the function
Here's the code you need:

I chosen to select max(custid) rather than simply custid when finding the value in case there are multiple rows that match. You might have to adjust this logic to suit your data.

How can I insert the return of DELETE into INSERT in postgresql?

I am trying to delete a row from one table and insert it with some additional data into another. I know this can be done in two separate commands, one to delete and another to insert into the new table. However I am trying to combine them and it is not working, this is my query so far:
insert into b (one,two,num) values delete from a where id = 1 returning one, two, 5;
When running that I get the following error:
ERROR: syntax error at or near "delete"
Can anyone point out how to accomplish this, or is there a better way? or is it not possible?
You cannot do this before PostgreSQL 9.1, which is not yet released. And then the syntax would be
WITH foo AS (DELETE FROM a WHERE id = 1 RETURNING one, two, 5)
INSERT INTO b (one, two, num) SELECT * FROM foo;
Before PostgreSQL 9.1 you can create a volatile function like this (untested):
create function move_from_a_to_b(_id integer, _num integer)
returns void language plpgsql volatile as
$$
declare
_one integer;
_two integer;
begin
delete from a where id = _id returning one, two into strict _one, _two;
insert into b (one,two,num) values (_one, _two, _num);
end;
$$
And then just use select move_from_a_to_b(1, 5). A function has the advantage over two statements that it will always run in single transaction — there's no need to explicitly start and commit transaction in client code.
For all version of PostgreSQL, you can create a trigger function for deleting rows from a table and inserting them to another table. But it seems slower than bulk insert that is released in PostgreSQL 9.1. You just need to move the old data into the another table before it gets deleted. This is done with the OLD data type:
CREATE FUNCTION moveDeleted() RETURNS trigger AS $$
BEGIN
INSERT INTO another_table VALUES(OLD.column1, OLD.column2,...);
RETURN OLD;

As above answer, after PostgreSQL 9.1 you can do this:
WITH tmp AS (DELETE FROM table RETURNING column1, column2, ...)
INSERT INTO another_table (column1, column2, ...) SELECT * FROM tmp;
That syntax you have there isn't valid. 2 statements is the best way to do this. The most intuitive way to do it would be to do the insert first and the delete second.
As "AI W", two statements are certainly the best option for you, but you could also consider writing a trigger for that. Each time something is deleted in your first table, another is filled.
