I'm new to mongo and am trying to do a very simple query in this collection:
{
"_id" : ObjectId("gdrgrdgrdgdr"),
"administrators" : {
"-HGFsfes" : {
"name" : "Jose",
"phone" : NumberLong(124324)
},
"-HGFsfqs" : {
"name" : "Peter",
"phone" : "+43242342"
}
},
"countries" : {
"-dgfgrdg : {
"lang" : "en",
"name" : "Canada"
},
"-grdgrdg" : {
"lang" : "en",
"name" : "USA"
}
}
}
How do I make a query that returns the results of administrators with name like "%Jos%" for example.
What I did until now is this: db.getCollection('coll').find({ "administrators.name": /Jos/});
And variations of this. But every thing I tried returns zero results.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance!
Your mistake is that administrators is not an array, but an object with fields that are themselves objects with name field. Right query will be
{ "administrators.-HGFsfes.name": /Jos/}
Unfortunatelly this way you're only querying -HGFsfes name field, not other administrator name field.
To achieve what you want, the only thing to do is to replace administrators object by an array, so your document will look like this :
{
"administrators" : [
{
"id" : "-HGFsfes",
"name" : "Jose",
"phone" : 124324
},
{
"id" : "-HGFsfqs",
"name" : "Peter",
"phone" : "+43242342"
}
],
countries : ...
}
This way your query will work.
BUT it will return documents where at least one entry in administrators array has the matching name field. To return only administrator matching element, and not whole document, check this question and my answer for unwind/match/group aggregation pipeline.
You need to use query like this:
db.collection_name.find({})
So if your collection name is coll, then it would be:
db.coll.find({"administrators.-HGFsfes.name": /Jos/});
Look this for like query in mongo.
Also, try with regex pattern like this:
db.coll.find({"administrators..-HGFsfes.name": {"$regex":"Jos", "$options":"i"}}});
It will give you only one result because your data is not an array as below in screenshot:
If you want multiple results, then you need to restructure your data.
Ok, think i've found a better solution for you, with aggregation framework.
Run the following query on your current collection, will return you all administrators with name "LIKE" jos (case insensitive with i option) :
db.test1.aggregate(
[
{
$project: {
administrators:{ $objectToArray: "$administrators"}
}
},
{
$unwind: {
path : "$administrators"
}
},
{
$replaceRoot: {
newRoot:"$administrators"
}
},
{
$match: {
"v.name":/jos/i
}
},
]
);
Output
{
"k" : "-HGFsfes",
"v" : {
"name" : "Jose",
"phone" : NumberLong(124324)
}
}
"k" and "v" are coming from "$objectToArray" operator, you can add a $project stage to rename them (or discard if k value doesn't matter)
Not sure for Robomongo testing but in Studio 3T, formerly Robomongo, you can either copy/paste this query in Intellishell console, or copy/import in aggregation tab, (small icon 'paste from the clipboard').
Hope it helps.

I did this in my mongodb:
db.teams.insert({name:"Alpha team",employees:[{name:"john"},{name:"david"}]});
db.teams.insert({name:"True team",employees:[{name:"oliver"},{name:"sam"}]});
db.teams.insert({name:"Blue team",employees:[{name:"jane"},{name:"raji"}]});
db.teams.find({"employees.name":/.*o.*/});
But what I got was:
{ "_id" : ObjectId("5ddf3ca83c182cc5354a15dd"), "name" : "Alpha team", "employees" : [ { "name" : "john" }, { "name" : "david" } ] }
{ "_id" : ObjectId("5ddf3ca93c182cc5354a15de"), "name" : "True team", "employees" : [ { "name" : "oliver" }, { "name" : "sam" } ] }
But what I really want is
[{"name":"john"},{"name":"oliver"}]
I'm having a hard time finding examples of this without using some kind of programmatic iterator/loop. Or examples I find return the parent document, which means I'd have to parse out the embedded array employees and do some kind of UNION statement?
Eg.
How to get embedded document in mongodb?
Retrieve only the queried element in an object array in MongoDB collection
Can someone point me in the right direction?
Please add projections to filter out the fields you don't need. Please refer the project link mongodb projections
Your find query should be constructed with the projection parameters like below:
db.teams.find({"employees.name":/.*o.*/}, {_id:0, "employees.name": 1});
This will return you:
[{"name":"john"},{"name":"oliver"}]
Can be solved with a simple aggregation pipeline.
db.teams.aggregate([
{$unwind : "$employees"},
{$match : {"employees.name":/.*o.*/}},
])
EDIT:
OP Wants to skip the parent fields. Modified query:
db.teams.aggregate([
{$unwind : "$employees"},
{$match : {"employees.name":/.*o.*/}},
{$project : {"name":"$employees.name",_id:0}}
])
Output:
{ "name" : "john" }
{ "name" : "oliver" }
I have a collection of persons whose schema looks like the collection of following documents.
Document: {
name:
age:
educations:[{
title:xyz,
passed_year:2005,
univercity:abc},
{
title:asd
passed_year:2007,
univercity:mno
}],
current_city:ghi
}
Now I wanna show all the persons who has not done xyz education from abc university in year 2005.
I think two possible queries for this need but not sure which one to use as both of them are giving me the output
Query 1:
db.persons.find({"education":{$ne:{$elemMatch:{"title":"xyz","passed_year":2005,"univercity":"abc"}}}})
Query 2:
db.persons.find({"education":{$not:{$elemMatch:{"title":"xyz","passed_year":2005,"univercity":"abc"}}}})
I'm quite confused about operator $ne and $not, which one should I use with $elemMatch as both of them are giving me the output.
Given this $elemMatch: {"title":"xyz","passed_year":2005,"univercity":"abc"} I think you want to exclude any documents which contain an sub document in the educations array which contains all of these pairs:
"title" : "xyz"
"passed_year" : 2005
"univercity" : "abc"
This query will achieve that:
db.persons.find({
"educations": {
$not: {
$elemMatch:{"title": "xyz", "passed_year": 2005, "univercity": "abc"}
}
}
})
In your question you wrote:
both of them are giving me the output
I suspect this is because your query is specifying education whereas the correct attribute name is educations. By specifying education you are adding a predicate which cannot be evaluated since it references a non existent document attribute so regardless of whether that predicate uses $ne or $not it will simply not be applied.
In answer to the question of which operator to use: $not or $ne: if you run the above query with .explain(true) you'll notice that the parsed query produced by Mongo is very different for each of these operators.
Using $ne
"parsedQuery" : {
"$not" : {
"educations" : {
"$eq" : {
"$elemMatch" : {
"title" : "xyz",
"passed_year" : 2005,
"univercity" : "abc"
}
}
}
}
}
Using $not:
"parsedQuery" : {
"$not" : {
"educations" : {
"$elemMatch" : {
"$and" : [
{
"passed_year" : {
"$eq" : 2005
}
},
{
"title" : {
"$eq" : "xyz"
}
},
{
"univercity" : {
"$eq" : "abc"
}
}
]
}
}
}
}
So, it looks like use of $ne causes Mongo to do something like this psuedo code ...
not educations equalTo "$elemMatch" : {"title" : "xyz", "passed_year" : 2005, "univercity" : "abc"}
... i.e. it treats the elemMatch clause as if it is the RHS of an equality operation whereas use of $not causes Mongo to actually evaluate the elemMatch clause.
I have a set of mongodb documents with the following structure:
{
"_id" : NUUID("58fbb893-dfe9-4f08-a761-5629d889647d"),
"Identifiers" : {
"IdentificationLevel" : 2,
"Identifier" : "extranet\\test#test.com"
},
"Personal" : {
"FirstName" : "Test",
"Surname" : "Test"
},
"Tags" : {
"Entries" : {
"ContactLists" : {
"Values" : {
"0" : {
"Value" : "{292D8695-4936-4865-A413-800960626E6D}",
"DateTime" : ISODate("2015-04-30T09:14:45.549Z")
}
}
}
}
}
}
How can I make a query with the mongo shell which finds all documents with a specific "Value" (e.g.{292D8695-4936-4865-A413-800960626E6D} in the Tag.Entries.ContactLists.Values path?
The structure is unfortunately locked by Sitecore, so it is not an options to use another structure.
As your sample collection structure show Values is object, it contains only one Value. Also you must check for Value as it contains extra paranthesis. If you want to get Value from given structure try following query :
db.collection.find({
"Tags.Entries.ContactLists.Values.0.Value": "{292D8695-4936-4865-A413-800960626E6D}"
})
I need get a specific object in array of array in MongoDB.
I need get only the task object = [_id = ObjectId("543429a2cb38b1d83c3ff2c2")].
My document (projects):
{
"_id" : ObjectId("543428c2cb38b1d83c3ff2bd"),
"name" : "new project",
"author" : ObjectId("5424ac37eb0ea85d4c921f8b"),
"members" : [
ObjectId("5424ac37eb0ea85d4c921f8b")
],
"US" : [
{
"_id" : ObjectId("5434297fcb38b1d83c3ff2c0"),
"name" : "Test Story",
"author" : ObjectId("5424ac37eb0ea85d4c921f8b"),
"tasks" : [
{
"_id" : ObjectId("54342987cb38b1d83c3ff2c1"),
"name" : "teste3",
"author" : ObjectId("5424ac37eb0ea85d4c921f8b")
},
{
"_id" : ObjectId("543429a2cb38b1d83c3ff2c2"),
"name" : "jklasdfa_XXX",
"author" : ObjectId("5424ac37eb0ea85d4c921f8b")
}
]
}
]
}
Result expected:
{
"_id" : ObjectId("543429a2cb38b1d83c3ff2c2"),
"name" : "jklasdfa_XXX",
"author" : ObjectId("5424ac37eb0ea85d4c921f8b")
}
But i not getting it.
I still testing with no success:
db.projects.find({
"US.tasks._id" : ObjectId("543429a2cb38b1d83c3ff2c2")
}, { "US.tasks.$" : 1 })
I tryed with $elemMatch too, but return nothing.
db.projects.find({
"US" : {
"tasks" : {
$elemMatch : {
"_id" : ObjectId("543429a2cb38b1d83c3ff2c2")
}
}
}
})
Can i get ONLY my result expected using find()? If not, what and how use?
Thanks!
You will need an aggregation for that:
db.projects.aggregate([{$unwind:"$US"},
{$unwind:"$US.tasks"},
{$match:{"US.tasks._id":ObjectId("543429a2cb38b1d83c3ff2c2")}},
{$project:{_id:0,"task":"$US.tasks"}}])
should return
{ task : {
"_id" : ObjectId("543429a2cb38b1d83c3ff2c2"),
"name" : "jklasdfa_XXX",
"author" : ObjectId("5424ac37eb0ea85d4c921f8b")
}
Explanation:
$unwind creates a new (virtual) document for each array element
$match is the query part of your find
$project is similar as to project part in find i.e. it specifies the fields you want to get in the results
You might want to add a second $match before the $unwind if you know the document you are searching (look at performance metrics).
Edit: added a second $unwind since US is an array.
Don't know what you are doing (so realy can't tell and just sugesting) but you might want to examine if your schema (and mongodb) is ideal for your task because the document looks just like denormalized relational data probably a relational database would be better for you.
I have the following document structure
{
"_id" : "aaa0001",
"path" : "/some/path",
"information" : {
"name" : "info"
},
"colors" : {
"colors" : [
{
"key" : "AAAA001",
"name" : "White"
},
{
"key" : "BBBB002",
"name" : "Black"
}
]
}
}
the idea is that I have to return the document by the color key. I have two parameters the "path" and the "color", so, I was trying to make something like this
db.components.find(
{$and:[
{"path" : "/some/path"},
{"colors":{"colors" : {$elemMatch: { "key" : "AAAA001" } } } }
]})
I'm getting the following message "Script is executed successfully, but there is no results to show".
Can anyone give me some directions regarding this?
thanks
Use the following query:
db.components.find({
"path": "/some/path",
"colors.colors.key" : "AAAA001"
})
MongoDB expects query document to contain field-value pairs { <field>: <value> }. So, in your example you're querying for a document with colors field equal to:
{"colors" : {$elemMatch: { "key" : "AAAA001" } } }
As for $and and $elemMatch operators, you don't need them in such a simple query.
For more information read Query Documents.
Update
You can also select only matching subdocument from colors array using Positional Operator $:
db.components.find({
"path": "/some/path",
"colors.colors.key" : "AAAA001"
}, {
_id: 0,
"colors.colors.$": 1
})
Though, you won't be able to change your documents structure, thus getting
{ "colors" : { "colors" : [ { "key" : "AAAA001", "name" : "White" } ] } }
