This seems quite basic, but I can only seem to create vertical splits in vs code, and would like to be able to create horizontal but don't know what the command is to do so.
I have tried looking through the commands prefixed with Terminal: , but don't seem to have anything that will create a new terminal in a horizontal split. The command that I'm using to create a new terminal is Terminal: Create New Integrated Terminal
open a first terminal, then a second one, then right click a terminal: "move to editor area".
Configure default terminal location
In theory you can configure the terminal location, using Workbench > Panel: Default Location:
The setting ID is workbench.panel.defaultLocation
The JSON is:
"workbench.panel.defaultLocation": "left"
That doesn't work for me. Sounds like a bug.
Work-around
To work around this you can:
Pull up a terminal with Ctrl'
Right click on the TERMINAL tab
Select either "Move panel left" or "Move panel right"
Click into the panel
Hit CtrlShift5 to split the terminal
You now have two terminals, one above the other
I have also found that changing the alignment of the terminal panel can give some more width and prevent crammed text in a narrow terminal column. To do this go into the VSCode menu...
View -> Appearance -> Align Panel -> Justify
This will place the terminal below everything and give extra width because it is no longer crowded by the Primary Side Bar.
On the terminal panel click on Configure Terminal Settings
On the next screen change Default Location to editor
Now if you create terminals it will create it in editor window
Use tmux and use ITerm.app in your configuration
If you're like me and your cat walked on your keyboard and opened a split terminal somehow, you can close it by right clicking the split piece and select Kill Terminal.
I can't find this in the documentation. Currently, when I click Terminal > New Terminal, it appears to the right of the IDE. I prefer to see this at the bottom. How do I move it to the bottom please? I have looked but I do not understand all the Newspeak.
You can right-click on Terminal and choose Move Panel to Bottom option, as you can see here:
If you go to settings there is an option to put the terminal on the bottom or right. You can change it there. If you are actually editting the settings.json file look for "workbench.panel.defaultLocation" statement and change it to "bottom"
When you open VS Code, the terminal defaults to opening on the bottom. You can click on the icon to move it to the right. I'm wondering if there's a way to set opening on the right as the default.

Yes - introduced in v1.20 there is the setting workbench.panel.defaultLocation with the option of "bottom" or "right".
It's at the bottom by default.
For example in the following image ,panel(Section D) is at the bottom, instead I want it to move to the rightside i.e., in the area where README.md editior shown in Editor Groups(Section C).

As of October 2018 (version 1.29) the button in #mvvijesh's answer no longer exists.
You now have 2 options.
Right click the panel's toolbar (nowhere else on the panel will work) and choose "move panel right/bottom":
Or choose "View: Toggle Panel Position" from the command palette.

You can press
ctrl + , (Or cmd + , on OSX)
and add the following option to your user settings JSON file:
"workbench.sideBar.location": "right"
I'm using Visual Studio Code v1.24.0 on a Mac.
By default, the Panel will appear on the bottom (You can change the default as well. Please refer to #Forres' answer: Moving Panel in Visual Studio Code to right side)
Here's the bottom/right toggle button for VS Code Panel:
Once I click on this button, the Panel moves to the right.
Moving it back is a little tricky though. As you can see, some of the buttons are hidden. This is because the width of the panel when it's aligned right is too small. We need to expand the column to see all the buttons.

Now, if you want to move the Panel back to the bottom, click on the toggle bottom/top button again.
Click menu option View > Appearance > Move Side Bar Right or in settings.json:

Go to View --> Appearance --> Move Panel Right
Click menu option View > Appearance > Move to Side Bar Right. Once side bar moves to right, option "Move Side Bar Right" changes to "Move to Side Bar Left".

For Visual Studio Code v1.31.1, you can toggle the panel session via the View menu.
Go to the View Menu.
Via the Appearance option, click on Toggle Panel Position

This removes the command View: Toggle Panel Position (workbench.action.togglePanelPosition) in favor of the following new commands:
View: Move Panel Left (workbench.action.positionPanelLeft)
View: Move Panel Right (workbench.action.positionPanelRight)
View: Move Panel To Bottom (workbench.action.positionPanelBottom)

With v1.64.2 they have brought back the command View: Move Panel Right (or Left). You can put the Panel (which typically has the Terminal/Output/etc. in it) as a vertical column on the left or right side - next to the Side Bar or Side Panel if you wish.
They are working on a fix for the change wrought by v1.64, should be in Insiders v1.65 02/08/2022.
Just use the View: Move Panel Right/Left/Bottom command from the Command Palette.

As of Stable v1.64 the setting "Wokbench.panel.defaultLocation": "right" will no longer work.
Replacing Panel Location
As mentioned above, the new Side Panel provides similar functionality
as moving the Panel to the left or right, yet improves on this by not

between panels, the new Side Panel is replacing the option to move the
bottom Panel.

Open settings using CTRL+., search for terminal and you should see this setting at the top. From the drop down below the settings explanation, choose right. See the screenshot below.

Go to Command Palette from the wheel icon on the bottom left --> search and enter "settings" menu --> search "panel" in the search bar --> Select Default location as "right" instead of the "bottom".
Reload VS Code, and you're good to go.
By default, ⌘J toggles the (bottom) panel. If all your views are on the side panel, make ⌘J toggle the side panel by doing:
Code > Preferences > Keyboard Shortcuts > "Command+J" > Right-click > Remove Keybinding

Go to view, then appearence. Then select move panel bottom.

I tried Googling but drew a blank and cannot see anything obvious in the config options mentioned on the vs code site page describing the config options

I don't believe you can detach/move the output windows in Visual Studio Code. You can move the side bar to the left/right side, but that's it. There is no config option, sorry.

This feature is not available yet in VS Code. However as of today (March 30, 2017) it's on 6 months roadmap so it should be done in a near feature.

Your original link to the view your desire is obsolete, so it is a guess as to what you wanted. But here is a demo of setting up a terminal/output look side-by-side. It is a little tricky - you drag your Outline header over the Terminal header which will then allow you the option of putting it to the left or right of the Terminal:

Version 1.47.0 of VS Code (at the moment of posting this, the latest one) allows you to drag output (or any other panel tab, e.g. terminal) to the activity bar. This way you can obtain output to the side of the editor.
Just right click on the panel of output section then select "Move panel left or right" as per your wish.
here your can see the move panel left option.
Press CTRL + SHIFT + P
Select Preferences: Open User Settings (JSON)
Insert (or change if it is there --search for it) the following config line:
"workbench.panel.defaultLocation": "right",
Save file.
That will work for new workspaces. VS-Code saves your preferences for each folder you start it in. So, if you navigate to a folder you previously called VS-Code in (I mean, from the terminal), it will open the output panel in the same location it was the last time you have used VS-Code from the same location.
After making the change above, go to a new place, like /opt and start VS-Code there to make a test.
