I have developed a Spotfire dashboard and would like to automate the following:
Update tables from a csv-file shortly after a certain csv-file gets created outside of Spotfire.
Save the dashboard after the update is over.
The problem is that at my company the dashboard still has internal status "in development" even though it is already in use. Therefore, I can rely only on what my Spotfire user can do: scripts. As far as I can tell, the native Spotfire automation routines are not available to me (please correct me if I'm wrong).
I tried the following IronPython script as a naive solution:

if csv_already_there():
update_table()
save_dashboard()
time.sleep(3600) # sleep for one hour
But the script crashes Spotfire.
Note: what I am looking for is probably a kludge but I'm okay with that since it's just a temporary solution.

I've written a simple script that has multiple custom functions stored as modules. I have done it this way because I was always been told that if your function can be reused by other things then it should be a module and not a .\ source include. I'm starting to think that mantra isn't right in my current scenario. I am trying to convert the script to an single .exe so that I can install it as a windows service.
Probably should acknowledge that I understand why you wouldn't want to include system modules like Active Directory or IIS management for the obvious issue that could lead to but I'm only trying to include custom functions in a single disputable non editable way.
I have used PowerGUI in the past but can't find any valid exe's for that since DELL have removed it and from memory, I don't think I've ever used it with a module.
I've tried PS2EXE-GUI and PS2EXE. Both of these make the exe and everything works fine while the modules exist. However, as soon as I put the exe on a server that hasn't got the Modules deployed to it, it fails to run. I thought the compile followed all the dependencies and included them as part of the build into the single exe? That appears to not be the case.
I've also tried the PowerShell Studio 2018 by Sapien, but based on their forums you can't include modules into the complied exe. Which again feels wrong if they are actually just custom functions, but it's the way they've written it.
I see https://poshtools.com/docs/posh-pro-tools/merge-script/ would possibly do what I need but that's chargeable and it looks like it actually merges all the content back into a single file. Given the time pressure I'm starting to think I'll have to pay if there are really no other better options. I just don't have time to join everything together manually and I can't help thinking there is a better way I'm missing!
Can anybody please suggest other options?
Could I also get clarification around my original mantra (functions go in modules...)?

Okay, this is kind of odd and it is driving us nuts. I'll outline what is going on as best I can, then I can provide specific details and/or code as folks request it, because I'm not sure what will be needed to suss this out.
I have an access database I have built so our analysts can work within a queue, select records, do whatever research is needed, then either mark the record in question as okay, or fill in some blanks and mark it as needing a dispute (we work in billing).
Basically, the database opens and a hidden form pulls the NT User Name from the local machine, then opens a visible form that queries the database via SQL ODBC to display a list of records with that NT User Name attached to them.
The user can then scroll through the records, select them to get more information, and click a button to mark them as okay, or another to mark them as needing a dispute.
If they click the okay button, it fires off an update query to mark the record as okay. If they click the dispute button, then it opens a third form to show them the line item they are disputing with values from all of the other text fields on the form that they can select from/fill in. On that form there is a button to commit the dispute, which fires off another query to update the values into the same table as the 'okay' button.
So, the issue is, that this all works perfectly on my workhorse machine, and an essentially naked test machine. It also works on another co-worker's machine. However, whenever we try to run it on two other coworkers' machines, everything works just fine, except for any of the queries that attempt to write back to the ODBC connection. All of the read-only stuff works just fine, just not the updates. But the updates work perfectly, and super-fast on my machine, my test rig, and my other co-worker's machine.
We've tried reinstalling the ODBC connection, and the ODBC SQL Drivers.
No go.
We've tried just opening the table in question on the affected machines and making direct edits to the table.
This works if no forms are open in the database, but as soon as we open a form, no update query will run against the table.
So, we tried commenting out all code on all open forms except the docmd.openquery code for the single button we used to test the update query.
No go.
We even built a new form with just a button on it that triggers a new update query that makes only one simple update (Now()) to the table in question.
This runs fine on its own, but times out when run off the button click from the form.
We tried changing the MS Office install on one machine to 'run all from computer' to make sure all necessary components are installed/present.
No go.
We tried installing the ODBC connection both via the normal windows interface, and through the access linked table manager interface.
No go.
We tried installing both 64-bit and 32-bit ODBC connections, both under USER DSN and SYSTEM DSN, and all permutations of one and not the other that we could think of.
No go.
It seems that no update query will write to that table while any form is open, but works just fine with no forms open. But only on these other two machines. Everything works fine on the other three machines we've tested on, whether forms are open or not.
We're kind of at wit's end here and don't know where to go. Google is proving unhelpful, possibly because we just don't know exactly how to search the problem out.
Here's basic technical stuff and I am happy to provide whatever other details, code, queries, etc. that are needed to troubleshoot upon request:
OS: Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit
Software: MS Office Enterprise 2013 32-bit
ODBC: SQL Server
All users have admin access to their respective machines.
Turns out that the issue here seems to have been an intermittent issue with Access being unable to determine which record to update due to the way we were calling details from a continuous form.
We went back to formula on our UI and built it so there is only ever one record on a form when we try to make changes to records, so there can be no system confusion about what record to update.
Still no clue as to why it was working intermittently, but the new iteration is working now.

I am trying to updating a software that is company wide. When the update is applied to the server, the client machines recognize they need an update and ask if you wish to update or not. To update, the user would need to run as admin, which is'nt an option in this case.
We would like to automate this process using powershell, using the Invoke-Command feature. For the most part, the only thing that the update does is copy new files to the programs folder, which we have achieved with robocopy. However, there is one registry key that needs to be added in multiple locations. There is a setup file that does this, but requires a user (with admin privileges) click a couple buttons, and we want this to be completely automated.
So I guess the short version of my question is, what is the best way to handle the registry changes that setup.exe does? It would be nice if there was a way to invoke the script that the executable does.
As for my question, I solved the problem with a slightly diferent approach. (One that should have been tried initially)
When (ProgramName).exe is run, if it sees that it needs updated, it runs a program called (ProgramName).setup.exe with the parameters :
Client="Local folder" server="server location"
These parameters did NOT work from the command line, however, and so I ended up using a powershell script to make a scheduled task that ran (ProgramName).setup.exe with said parameters.
Another huge advantage to this was the fact that I could create an icon that allowed a regular user to run the scheduled task with admin privileges. I couldn't setup a shortcut directly, however, I wrote an AUTO-it Executable that would run the task as admin.
I hope someone can get some level of help out of this post!
I am not a programmer rather a designer but have been trying to write a .bat file for weeks to have two applications, which I specify, open automatically and snap to a scale of 80% left hand side and 20% for the second app on the right hand side. I have looked into multiple options without having any luck. Currently, I can create a script to open two files and automate key strokes to have them snap 50-50%, however I really need the 80-20% screen real estate. Any chance anyone would be able to help me out?
I am currently trying to use PowerShell with WASP (http://wasp.codeplex.com/) but scripting in this is beyond my knowledge. Many thanks!
You should try UI Automation PowerShell Extensions.
It supports testing for Metro Apps. The initial setup is a bit tedious (as described in the link provided) but it is well worth it. You have a UI action recording tool UIAutomationSpy which records all of your actions and generates corresponding PowerShell scripts. You can then run these scripts using the UIARunner tool.
With respect to the current problem, you could simulate the steps for snapping the apps using the recorder. You could then create a task which runs a batch file (executing the concerned script) on startup.
I've been searching for this for awhile now, and I am not sure if I am just not using the correct search terms or if the answer is really that hard to find.
What I am trying to do is to create a new Windows service for a game server from a batch file, and then have a task run another batch file every 30 minutes or more that would run two commands on the game server's command line and do some file work.
Specifically, I am running a Minecraft server using Bukkit for a gaming community I help run, and I want to make sure that the thing is always up unless I specifically tell it to stop (like a service). Bukkit is run directly from a batch file and has it's own command line thing running on it.
I am told that you CAN run this type of thing as a service, but the command line will be hidden from view and/or interaction. This is the second part of my query. I have a handy little backup.bat file that copies all the world files and userdata files into a backup directory, 7zips it, and deletes the directory. The only thing is, is that Minecraft likes to always have the worlds' region files open and writing at all times, meaning that it could cause map corruption if I just run it straight off. To compensate, I need to run the command "save-off" on the server to disable the file hooks temporarily, run the backup, and as soon as it finishes, run "save-on" so that the game can continue without lost data.
What I would like to know about this second one is, is it possible to interface with the game service through a batch file, or do I need to create an application to do that? If the latter, how exactly does one go about doing that? I have moderate C++ knowledge (up through my second OO-C++ course in college), and can possibly learn another language if absolutely necessary.
So, in short, two questions:
1. Is it possible to, and how to run a BAT file as a Windows Service?
2. How to interface with said service via BAT files, and if not possible, what kind of application do I need to write (redirection to or writing a tutorial works for me).

Since we are speaking about a Bukkit Minecraft server, turn to the "Essentials" plugin for Bukkit.
It now includes a Backup function that does exactly what the OP asks for, namely stop the save so the files can be manipulated without corruption, launch a script, then starts again.
The script can be a backup one (examples provided in the linked page) but can be used to run any operation on the world's files.
