I have an angular application built on microservices. Zuul is my gateway. When the user first logs in, he is routed to the angular app if authenticated. Once the user is in the angular application, I need the ability to call another microservice passing in the user information collected at login. What options do I have to make this information available to the other service.
One option I could think of is have the gateway store the information in a cookie, have the angular application read that information from the cookie and pass it to the other microservice. Since the cookie can be tampered, I am thinking that may not be the right way.
Zuul filter? may not work as the services as stateless, I cannot use the session to store that information.
Any other options for this scenario?
You can use the Zuul pre filter to set the user data on the header and send to the next microservice

I've been exploring utilizing Cognito User Pools for authentication and API Gateway to feed client requests with auth tokens. I'd basically like to have a simple react app that utilizes the cognito sdk for authentication. Then use the authentication to make requests via the API Gateway to an express application, hooked up to cognito user pool auth. It would be ideal to have user information available in the express app - seems pretty simple to me.
I've seen many articles and forum posts about how to retrieve Cognito User Info in the context of a lambda function but nothing about how to retrieve Cognito User Info in the context of an HTTP Integration.
Is this possible?
Yes, it is possible, and can be achieved in, at least, two ways:
Proxying requests with original headers
If you enable "Use HTTP Proxy integration" in your HTTP integration, the API Gateway will act as a proxy and forward any headers in the request to the backend (and same from the backend response back to the client). This means that the JWT will reach the express application in the same header the client sent it, where it can be decoded and the claim(s) retrieved.
Using request [and response] data mappings
Another way is to pass the required claim(s) in the Path/QueryString/Headers mappings for the Integration Request, using context.authorizer.claims.{claim} in the mapping, e.g. context.authorizer.claims.email. You can see the documentation on setting up the data mappings and also the mapping reference for more variables that can be used. Please note that for context variables the right syntax to use is without the $ prefix.
I have a set of REST services on IBM cloud. Ingress is integrated with Appid for authentication. Ingress adds the token id & access id to the authorization header.
Now on the API side (springboot) do I need to validate the user again on every request ? will this be redundant ? If no, which appid api can be used to authorize the user. Any reference to similar example
Already gone through the example on IBM cloud site. One is about ingress & appid integration, but does not talk about REST services layer how to handle the authorization tokens there.

Authentication versus Authorization is where the line is drawn. The Ingress integration with App ID does the authentication for you and your REST service (application) can be assured that the request if it comes through is authenticated. Now just because the user exists in your system and has provided the right credential does not mean that he is allowed to access the service he is trying to access or view the data he's trying to view which is where the authorization comes into play - the REST service can use the authorization tokens to figure out if the user has the right access to use the service.

In any application - REST, UI or otherwise - multiple levels of security may be necessary depending on your requirements. Authentication verifies the user is who they claim to be, authorization checks what permissions the user might have. Each application might have its own rules for what the user can access.
In your case, you have authenticated the user facilitated via Ingress with AppID, which supplies a user principal (identity) to your application. However, should every user have access to all of your application endpoints? If the answer is no, then you will need an authorization model, for which a common approach is RBAC (role-based access control).
Even without an RBAC requirement, it is still wise the validate the user's principal in some form for each request. For example, perhaps the user belongs to a domain that you might not expect, or should no longer have access to this specific REST application. Your application server may have features that assist you with a simple authorization feature, or you can custom build your own validation.
At present, as the identity provider, AppID can be the store of the user's role for RBAC. However your application or application server must decide what to do with that role.

I am looking into using microservice for my application. However the application involves authentication. E.g. there is a service for user to upload their images if they are authenticated. There is also a service for them to write reviews if they are authenticated.
How should i design the microservice to ensure that the user just need to authenticate once to access different services. Should i have a API gateway layer that does the authentication and make this API gateway talk to the different services?
You can do authentication at the gateway layer, if authentication is all you need. If you are interested in authorization, you may have to pass the tokens forward for application to consider it. Also you can do that, if you have trust on other services behind the gateways. That is service 1 is free to call service 2 without authentication.
Also you loose bit of information about the principal, you can however write it back on the request in the gateway while forwarding.
Also another point to consider is JWT, they are lightweight and more importantly could be validated without calling auth server explicitly and it saves you some time specially in microservices. So even if you have to do auth at every service layer you are doing it at minimal cost, some nanoseconds. You can explore that as well.
However final call is based on how strong your security needs are compared to rest. based on that you can take a call. Auth stripping at api gateway saves you code duplication but is less secure as other services can do as they wish.
Same goes for token, you can authenticate without explicit call to auth server but then tokens are valid for some min time and bearer is free to do as they wish once they got the tokens, you cannon invalidate it.
While Anunay's answer is one the most famous solutions, there is another solution I would like to point out. You could use some distributed session management systems to persist sessions on RAM or DISK. As an example, we have authentication module that creates a token and persists it in Redis. While Redis itself can be distributed and it can persist less used data on disk, then it will be a good choice for all microservices to check client tokens with redis.
With this method, there is nothing to do with API gateway. The gateway just passes tokens to microservices. So even in case you are thinking about different authenitcation methods on different services, it will be a good solution. (Although I cant think of a reason for that need right now but I have heard of it)
Inside a session, you can store user Roles and Permissions. That's how you can strict users access to some API's. And for your private API's, you could generate a token with role ADMIN. Then each microservice can call other one with that token so your API's will be safe.
Also you could rapidly invalidate any sessions and store anything you want in those sessions. In our system, spring framework generates a X-AUTH-TOKEN that can be set in headers. The token is pointing to a session key in redis. This works with Cookies too. (and if I'm not wrong, you could even use this method with oAuth and JWT)
In a clean architecture you can create a security module that uses this validation method over API's and add it to every microservice that you want to protect.
There are other options when it comes to session persisting too. Database, LDAP, Redis, Hazelcast ... the choice depends on your need.
I'm developing a mobile app, the server side is REST using Spring 3 MVC.
I was trying to integrate Spring Security with it to secure resources. I've read through a lot of material to get information on how to do it. I understand the architecture, however, when it comes to implementation I am still confused.
I referred a SO question; I have the same requirements. I understand the code, however, I am confused about when the first authenticate request comes in; at that time a token will not be present as the part of the header, so the same filter won't work.
So I was wondering how should I implement it. I was thinking of implementing it as follows:
A separate filter that authenticates user using username password from the request
After authentication the filter sets the authentication info in the context
And another filter that works with tokens for authentication for all API URLs
Is this the correct way to implement it?
No need to add another filter. Whatever the authentication result, the system will try to call handler for corresponding mapping, as you have chain.doFilter() outside if(validate_token).
You must tell Spring security that your request /login MUST NOT BE AUTHENTICATED. You can configure it in xml/java config.
First, let me describe the application: we are working on a web-based software which is some kind of custom help desk application. It requires the user to login (we use FOSUserBundle). After login the user is redirected to the dashboard. From the dashboard there is no more page reload, the frontend is build on Angularjs and the user can get anywhere within the application without page reload. You could speak of a single page application.
So the data that is presented to the user, is fetched from a rest api (we use FOSRestBundle). This works quite well at this point.
There is some kind of dilemma. Only our staff will access this application (for now). So a staff member needs to login to access the helpdesk. The data that is pushed to the frontend via angularjs is called via api, so the user that has just logged in needs to authenticate again on every request because of rest.
Problem: Since the backend runs on symfony2 let us just try to get the user object of the currently logged in user when an api call is made:
$this->get('security.context')->getToken()->getUser()
returns anon. that stands for anonymous, or
$this->getUser();
returns just null.
So the authenticated context seems to be gone when using the rest api. However when I call an action directly without rest, I can get user information.
So what we need is to secure our rest api and get user information on every api call. We don't want third party people to access our application, just staff. I am not familar with OAuth, but the user will be redirected to a third party page to Allow/Deny access to his data? This would not be an option for us.
Based on that information, do you have any suggestions or ideas how to secure the api and transport the user data so that getUser does not return null or anon. but the actuall logged in user?
there's another way to resolve your problem.
It's by using Certificates.
you can generate certificates then use Http tunneling (https obviousley), the server will ask for a certificate (you've to configure Apache for that but it's not a big challenge).
with this in place, you've to add a CertificateManageron the server side to ensure that the certificate is valid and to know who's calling the service (to be able to authenticate the user at each request), the CertificateManager(or what ever you'll call it) will probably have to be configured within you filters chaine (as known in the java world), et voilĂ

REST is stateless so you will have to send some kind of authentication/authorization in each request. You can use HTTP BASIC AUTH or something like OAuth.

I'm kind of building our application in exactly the same architecture (RESTful API with Symfony2 back-end and AngularJS frontend.
