Postgres service failing on Win10, manual startup works - postgresql

As of today, suddenly, my Postgres 9.6 Windows 10 service fails to start up the server. Here is what I used to register the service:
pg_ctl register -N PostgreSQL-9.6.10 --pgdata=%DATA_HOME%\Postgres ^
--log=%DATA_HOME%\Postgres\server.log
When I go to my Windows service control panel, when I hit start for this new service, which is registered okay, it reports that the service is started for a brief moment and then it switches the status to stopped. I am unable to find any logging of the service itself, to get a trace of why this might be happening.
The service does start fine when I do it manually:
pg_ctl -D %DATA_HOME%\Postgres -l %DATA_HOME%\Postgres\postgres.log start
Any idea what the problem might be and how to recover my service?

How to configure telnet service for yocto image

telnet is necessary in order to maintain compatibility with older software in this case. I'm working with the Yocto Rocko 2.4.2 distribution. when I try to telnet to the board I'm getting the oh so detailed message "connection refused".
Using the method here and the options here I modified the busybox configuration per suggestion. When the board is booted up and logged in, if you execute: telnet, it spits out usage info and a quick directory check shows that telnet is installed to /usr/bin/telnet. My guess is that the telnet client is installed but the telnet server is not running?
I need to get telnetd to start manually at least so I know it will work with an init script in place. The second reference link there suggests that 'telnetd will not be started automatically though...' and that there will need to be an init script. How can I start telnetd manually for testing?
systemctl enable telnetd
returns: Unit telnetd.service could not be found
UPDATE
telnetd in located in /usr/sbin/telnetd. I was able to manually start the telnetd service for testing from there. After manually starting the service telnet login now works. looking into writing a systemd init script to auto start the telnetd service, so I suppose this issue is closed. unless anyone would like to offer up detailed telnet busybox configuration and setup steps as an answer to 'How to configure telnet service for yocto image'
update
Perhaps there is something more? I created a unit file that looks like this:
[Unit]
Description=auto start telnetd
[Service]
ExecStart=/usr/sbin/telnetd
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
on reboot, systemd indicates the process executed and succeeded:
systemctl status telnetd
.
.
.
Process: 466 ExecStart=/usr/sbin/telnetd (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
.
.
.
The service is not running however. netstat -l does not list it and telnet login fails. Something I'm missing?
last update...i think
so following this post, I managed to get telnet.socket service to startup on reboot.
systemctl status telnet.socket
shows that it is running and listening on 23. Now however, when I try to remote in with telnet I'm getting
Connection closed by foreign host
Everything I've read so far has been talking about xinetd service (which I do not have...). What is confusing is that, if I just navigate to /usr/sbin/ and execute telnetd, the server is up and running and I can telnet into the board, so I do not believe I'm missing any utilities or services (like the above mentioned xinetd), but something is still not being configured correctly. any ideas?

Starting a postgres SQL 9.6 Server on Amazon Linux returns unrecognized service

I am attempting to start a Postgres SQL server on amazon Linux using the command
sudo service postgresql start
I installed the server using this method. I have added it here for simplicity
sudo rpm -i https://download.postgresql.org/pub/repos/yum/9.6/redhat/rhel-6-x86_64/pgdg-ami201503-96-9.6-2.noarch.rpm
and then
sudo yum install postgresql96-server.x86_64
after which i did this to install the command line tools for postgres
sudo yum install postgresql96.x86_64 postgresql96-libs.x86_64
Any suggestions on how I can start the server ? I usually start the server using
the command
sudo service postgresql start
however its not working in this case as it says "Unrecognized service"
I then tried this
postgres -D /usr/local/pgsql/data
postgres: could not access directory "/usr/local/pgsql/data": No such file or directory. Run initdb or pg_basebackup to initialize a PostgreSQL data directory.
Having the same issue, or similar. May be I installed pgsql from source, don't remember. We could make our own service start files. How? Let's find out! >>RTFM<< starting with what we already know:
man service
which leads us to chkconfig(8), so
man chkconfig
and it gives us an option
chkconfig --add ${svcname}
to add a brand new service under a name we choose!
But before we do, we might actually want to check what's already there. With
service --status-all
we get a list of all known services and their run status. And I found "postmaster" in my list, and as you might know, the PostgreSQL master server to connect to used to be called "postmaster". Yet, when I try
service postmaster status
it also tells me it doesn't know such service. OK, forget it -- for now -- just let's move on with making our own! But I still want to peek what there is in run-level 3 (normal server run level). So I go
ls -1 /etc/rc.d/rc3.d |fgrep post
and there I find: "K36postgresql95"! So, accordingly our service name should be "postgresql95". Trying that:
service postgresql95 status
it says now "postmaster is stopped". Confusingly the name the service reports for itself both in service --status-all and when we individually inquire for it is different than the name used to actually address it in the service command. Good to know. Easy enough to search /etc/rc.d for the name of interest.
service postgresql95 start
now starts the service. And check with
psql -U ${pguser} ${pgdb}
and I find that working. So now all I need to do is enable that service at system boot to auto-start
chkconfig --levels 3 postgresql95 on
and that works, doesn't it?
PS: It doesn't matter that I happen to run version 9.5
I recently installed PostgreSQL 9.2.24 on Amazon Linux 2 and I had to initialize the database manually before being able to create ROLE and DATABASE as I normally would on Ubuntu.
// initialize database after installing with yum
$ sudo postgresql-setup initdb
// start
$ sudo systemctl start postgresql.service

Can not start cloudera-scm-server-db because of "The CM is using external DB"

I've updated jdk from 1.8_131 to 1.8_151 for CDH5. So i need to restart the cluster to make it take affect. In the begining i use cloudrea manager web page to restart, but it failed when zookeeper started which is the first step. Then I made a bad choice which is close cloudrea manager in terminal including kill -9 postgresql process. After that, i could't open the cloudrea manager web page.
I use following instructions to start the cluster.
service cloudera-scm-server-db start
service cloudera-scm-server start
service cloudera-scm-agent start
All of them are failed, because /var/log/cloudera-scm-server and /var/log/cloudera-scm-agent disappear.
So I creat these two files manually also include dg.log and cloudera-scm-agent.log
At this time, the server and agent could start. But server-db still can not. The next is some details.
Starting cloudera-scm-server-db (via systemctl): Job for
cloudera-scm-server-db.service failed because the control process
exited with error code. See "systemctl status
cloudera-scm-server-db.service" and "journalctl -xe" for details
journalctl -xe
The CM is using external DB. Failed to start embedded DB service, giving up
service --status-all
What i've done:
So, what should i do now? thank you thank you very much!!!
The above problem had been sovled.
If you open this /etc/cloudera-scm-server/db.properties file, which shown as below.
# cat /etc/cloudera-scm-server/db.properties

com.cloudera.cmf.db.type=postgresql
com.cloudera.cmf.db.host=localhost
com.cloudera.cmf.db.name=scm
com.cloudera.cmf.db.user=scm
com.cloudera.cmf.db.password=TXqEESuhj5
com.cloudera.cmf.db.setupType=EXTERNAL
EXTERNAL is the crux.
In my CDH service, I use embedded postgresql as my server database. But it's not recommended to use by cloudera offical. I'm a new man on Cloudera, so I made a mistake.
I wrongly use a command which only prepared for Cloudera Manager Server external database.
/usr/share/cmf/schema/scm_prepare_database.sh postgresql scm scm scm_password
The above command can config db.properties
As long as you run above command, com.cloudera.cmf.db.setupType will be set to EXTERNAL(For more details about this, you can find in Cloudera docs)
The most direct and effective way is to reset password of scm.
Then
update the password
set Type as EMBEDDED
make port 7432 listening(you can use netstat -nltp to check)
in db.properties.
#vim cat /etc/cloudera-scm-server/db.properties
Auto-generated by scm_prepare_database.sh
Sat Oct 1 12:19:15 PDT 201
com.cloudera.cmf.db.type=postgresql
com.cloudera.cmf.db.host=localhost:7432
com.cloudera.cmf.db.name=scm
com.cloudera.cmf.db.user=scm
com.cloudera.cmf.db.password=new_password
com.cloudera.cmf.db.setupType=EMBEDDED
Now close all cloudera-scm service and restart in order server-db,server,agent.
If /var/log was cleared wrongly.
You can creat these files such as /var/log/cloudera-scm-server and /var/log/cloudera-scm-agent manually.
It is noteworthy that you should creat these file by user cloudera-scm, otherwise the log can not be written, and you won't find what error happened from log file.

How can I restart my openshift postgres cartridge?

My app has fallen over as it can't connect to the postgres DB and when I try to connect to the DB via ssh and psql I get the following message:
psql: could not connect to server: Connection refused
Is the server running on host "<GEAR_ID>-<NAMESPACE>.rhcloud.com" (<IP_ADDRESS>) and accepting
TCP/IP connections on port <PORT_NUMBER>?
Running rhc app show --state prints:
Cartridge jbossas-7, haproxy-1.4 is started
Cartridge postgresql-9.2 is started
also, running rhc app show shows nothing unusual.
I can't telnet to the above IP_ADDRESS & POST_NUMBER, which kinda looks like communication has been broken between the 2 gears.
Any ideas?
I had the same problem. Using pg_ctl instead of the rhc commands fixed it for me.
$ rhc ssh <appname>
[...rhcloud.com ...]\> pg_ctl restart
pg_ctl: old server process (PID: 20034) seems to be gone
starting server anyway
server starting
To restart your entire application:
rhc app restart <app_name>
TO restart just your postgresql cartridge:
rhc cartridge restart <cart_type> --app <app_name>
You can get the cart type by running
rhc app show <app_name> --gears
And looking for the cartridge name under the "cartridges" heading
Ok, so I managed to work around this issue but man it was a PITA.
Since I couldn't find any useful help on the web around this problem, I've ended up creating a new app based on my old one, and using pg_dump and psql to save and restore the db from the old application into my new app.
I'm still none-the-wiser as to why the original app was no longer able to communicate from the main jboss gear to the postgresql gear, even though the postgres server was up and running.
Perhaps (hopefully) someone from openshift will want to look into this. If so I'll keep my old broken app around for a while.

Can't stop or restart JBoss AS 4.2.3 as a service in Fedora

i have a little issue with a Jboss AS 4.2.3 . I'm developing an application in Seam so i'm using Jboss as server. In the client company they have a Jboss AS 4.2.3 installed on Fedora and configured as a service, so it starts automatically on boot machine with PostgreSQL. So, if i run chkconfig --list i can see Jboss here as a service.
But the problem is when i try to restart, stop or start this service (i have root permissions) using this command:
service jboss stop/restart
But i don't know what happens that looks like it doesn't find the Jboss AS instance that's running because i get this message:
JOBSS_CMD_START = cd /opt/java/jboss/bin; /opt/java/jboss/bin/run.sh -c default
No JBossas is currently running
But it's running because if i enter localhost:8080 on a browser it loads the Jboss page. The server admin of the company doesn't know also why the service can't restart or stop or start and only i know that he followed this tutorial to install and configure JBoss AS:
thewiki4opentech.org/index.php/How_to_install_JBoss_AS_in_CentOS_/RedHat/_Fedora
Also, i tried with
/etc/init.d/jboss stop
And i get the same output. If i use
/opt/java/jboss/bin/start.sh -c default
It tries to start a second instance of Jboss AS but it gives me errors because is trying to use the same ports as already started Jboss instance.
And it's difficult to me because i'm connecting remotely using Teamviewer and i want to deploy an EAR but i can't because i can't restart the service to extract the ear. So i wanna ask you for help if you know why the Jboss AS that's running can't be stopped or started using service jboss stop.
As aditional info, i'm using the config to access Jboss apps from other machines (using 0.0.0.0) and the server has a static IP. The config of my hosts file is this:
127.0.0.1 localhost localhost.localdomain localhost4 localhost4.localdomain4
192.168.1.106 entertechserver.localdomain entertechserver
#::1 localhost localhost.localdomain localhost6 localhost6.localdomain6
Regards.
Well, i think that i found the answer. The server admin copy the script run.sh to /etc/init.d/ but we saw that there's another script named jboss_init_redhat.sh that i think is optimized for redhat/fedora systems, so we used this script to copy to /etc/init.d/ and it works!! Now when i stop it gives me the next output:
JBOSS_CMD_START = cd /opt/java/jboss/bin; /opt/java/jboss/bin/run.sh -c default -b 0.0.0.0
waiting for processes to stop
Really i haven't seen the difference between both scripts yet but it will be intersting to take a look.
Regards.
