I am using Eclipse and I am coding java. I really like the "Smart Caret" option for the Home and End buttons since it allows you to go the start and end of a line but not past any whitespaces. Also the Home key will take you to the start of a comment, rather than the start of the line. And you can cycle through different positions with these keys. And this is how the editor was by default, from installation.
However one thing that has happened a few times now is that when I am writing code in the editor, this functionality just vanishes. It is seemingly random when it happens and the weirdest part, I think, is that it is file specific. So all of a sudden when I am writing, the Home and End keys start taking me to the very start and end of the line I am on. It is as if I am accidentally pressing some hotkey to disable these Smart Carets for the specific file.
It does not help to disable and re-enable the Smart Caret option in Preferences. And beyond that I do not really know what to do. Is this a bug? It is incredibly annoying when it happens. Being used to things working one way, then having them spontaneously change and then again having them back to the default when I am editing a different file.

It appears I've had an F8 key being pressed non-stop, and it seems to be a shortcut for "Go to Next Error or Warning".
I've wrote a piece of code, it has an error which I'm aware of. Specifically, I'm trying to run a function which doesn't exist yet:
All good, I'm glad it is telling me there's a problem, but... I wish to keep writing stuff in the same file and I simply can't. Every so often the GUI keeps sending the caret (the place where my next piece of text will be written) to the beginning of the problematic piece of code. Simply speaking, I can't keep doing anything until I resolve the problem, since it forcefully intrudes my every action. Even more than that! When I go to a different file, with means of fixing the problem and adding the missing function, it once again interrupts me and forcefully takes me back to the problematic file to show me that there's a problem (??!?!?!). Closing it with "Esc" only closes it once, but it keeps on returning every several seconds.
I don't think it was like that just a week ago, and I didn't install any new plugin since then. I'm currently using the last version, 1.58.2.
How do I stop this work-flow-intruding behavior?

I've kept on working for some time and it turns out the issue is much bigger than that. Whenever I type a name of some property, half way through some wild problem would jump and tell me "Cannot find name 'quar'. Did you mean 'quarter'?". The issue is basically the time delay of the problem checks, it's non-existent. It's also too intrusive, moving the caret and jumping between files to show me the existing problems. It's very recent, it didn't happen earlier this week. I've tried disabling different plugins I have and they're not the cause.

Try disabling the Outline Explorer and see what happens then.
Furthermore, see if disabling autosave improves anything.

Now Im going to preface this by saying that this is quite possibly the most annoying thing I have ever experienced in my years computing.
I'm new to VS Code and as such I am knee deep in my settings.json a lot of the time. Especially moreso when Ive just installed a new extension and it comes with loads of parameters, alnd all sorts of goodies - sort of like I did today when I got home from work.
I open settings.json. I add a comment line indicating a new section for my new extension's myriad of settings I half understand, and move any auto-generated config settings from the bottom to the freshly minted position. I start typing, the widget pops up letting me know about all 70+ settings I can fiddle with as much as I please.
I hit tab on the first entry, it goes down. Tab again, "true" goes down.

OKAY no problem VS code. Quick restart, back to my config.
I start typing the extension again, I get 200ms in or however long it takes for that widgit to appear, and

I watch the text in my editor contort as the settings are unloaded and reloaded and unloaded again.
I got the first 4 characters of the extension name typed out before this lovely notification reappears.

when this happens a few times its a little irritating.
BUT THIS IS CONSTANT .Every. Single. Line. I try to add. Each and every setting. Sometimes 2 or 3 times before I actually get the string down, never-mind its value.
I don't know what to do, I am legitimately going to rip my hair out. This is by far easily up there with one of the most frustrating things I have ever been forced to endure. It is relentless.
I dont know what else to do. Ive tried all I can think of.
I just want to learn and use my new extension.
Please for the love of anything help me.

When I use Cmd+K to go to the next occurrence of the selected word, Eclipse leaves behind these red "cursors" right before the copies of the word that I navigate through. If I then edit the last occurrence that I find, Eclipse "helpfully" edits all the occurrences that I've navigated through in the same way. This leaves corruption in parts of my file that I'm not currently looking at, which is really infuriating.
I want to disable this "feature", but I haven't got a clue what to call it, so I don't know how to find the setting that turns it off. Searching the Eclipse preferences for "occurrence" only gives various versions of "Mark Occurrences" for each editor plugin, which doesn't disable this behavior when unchecked.

This isn't really given by PyDev, it's a feature added by LiClipse (http://www.liclipse.com/multi_edition_video.html).
After the link is done with Ctrl+K, you can press ESC to remove those links if you don't want the multi-edition to happen (so that when you edit one occurrence you don't edit the others).
I must say this is the first request to have that turned off... I'm pretty certain as I just took a look and there's no setting to do that -- so, unfortunately, until the next release, you have to either live with it, remembering to press ESC if you don't want the multi edition to happen or use a plain Eclipse install with PyDev, but you'd also be without other LiClipse benefits, such as textmate bundles, vertical indent guides, theming integration, etc.
Still, note that ideally, I'd say you should get used to it as it can be a real time-saver -- although I'll implement the setting to turn it off for the next release anyways, as it's something that should really be there ;)
I'm wondering if I'm the only one struggling (i.e. failing) to keep the emacs key bindings working in Eclipse.
I set them. It works fine. The it stops working fine. Some keys still work, others don't. I find myself in a kind of weird quantum state of uncertain key-binding setup superposition. Some key bindings from the standard set work, some from the emacs set work, some things I can achieve with neither set of bindings.
I'm the only one to experience this? I've seen this on at least 4 computers in the past few months.
I set key bindings back to standard set. Sometimes it works. I use the reset to defaults button. Try to set it back to emacs. Doesn't work. Pressing the apply button between the different steps or not... Drives me crazy.
On some computers, the bindings are just whatever. Can only save using the mouse, C-d and C-k don't work to delete/cut lines, most emacs keys still work but back to C-space for auto-completion, etc.
Anyone knows what can cause this? How to prevent it? Am I pressing some key binding key-bindings by mistake?
I had a similar problem with the Ctl-K, Ctl-D commands: after doing an upgrade (I forget whether it was Eclipse itself or the Android plugin) I saw Eclipse offering a little pop up menu on both these keys, offering to do either the correct Emacs command or some completely unrelated command. So, for example, Ctl-D offered to either delete the next character (correct) or delete the line (incorrect).
After some poking around in the key bindings (Windows>Preferences>General>Keys), I discovered that sure enough, someons in the Eclipse project supplied these wrong bindings in addition to the correct ones. So I deleted the incorrect bindings and left the correct ones.
So I thought I would be out of the woods at this point. But I also discovered that I had to add the correct binding back in a couple of times before it would stick.
Look for Cut to End of Line under the Command column and make sure it has Ctl-K when Editing Text and in the Text Editing Category. The same for Delete Next (which means next character). But make sure Ctl-D does NOT show up for the Delete Line Command.
Test it out in an editor window; if it fails, go edit the bindings again, test again, repeat until it sticks, making sure you click Apply after editing the bindings.
I'm using Eclipse Galileo, with a plugin for PHP development. I use the same editor at work and at home for my personal projects (at work, I do not use PHP or the PHP plugin, however).
One thing about using it is driving me crazy, though, and though I've spent a couple of hours digging through all the different options under Window->Preferences (as well as searching around the Internet), I can't find out how to do this one thing. Maybe someone here can help me?
Here's what's happening. I've got a line of code:

and my cursor is on the 'w' in 'world'.
I hit the 'Home' key on my keyboard. In my key mappings, it claims this is supposed to take me to the beginning of the line ('Line Start', to be exact). To me, 'start' means 'there is nothing to the left of this position', aka position 1. As in, no tabs, no spaces, no nothing, and if I hit the 'Left arrow' key on my keyboard, I should then move to the end of the previous line. You know, how your browser works inside of a textarea, and how Word, Notepad, Excel, and almost every other program works.
Instead, when I hit 'Home', my cursor moves to position 5, the very beginning of the word 'echo'. This, in case it's not clear, is NOT the start of the line. It's the start of the non-whitespace content on the line, but that's not the way I expect this key to function. If I hit 'Home' again, I get to the REAL start of the line - position 1. Hit it again, and I'm back to 5.
It's possible that it's not a matter of the 'Home' key at all, but potentially a side-effect of the 'Smart Indenting' function. I also can't figure out how to turn that off (I've seen a few posts here that indicate that it can't be done), and it frequently messes up my formatting which causes me to waste my time fixing it, as I'm particular about how my code looks when I'm coding. For example, when I copy/paste a line, the indenting gets all messed up (the pasted line tabs in to where Eclipse thinks it should be, in spite of all of the preceding whitespace I've copied along with the text on the line). This may be related to the operation of the 'Home' key, or to Eclipse's conception of what the 'start' of the line really means.
I realize that people out there who don't code like I do will have an initial reaction of 'change the way you type', or 'ignore the messed-up formatting and let Eclipse auto-fix it later' or something similar. That's possible, but will take quite a bit of time, and is actively hindered by the fact that I'd be changing the way I work on this one app (in this one setting, as it doesn't do this at work), while all the others will continue to operate as I expect them to. So for me, that sort of suggestion is not a very viable option.

Untick General > Editors > Text Editors > Smart caret positioning at line start and end. Note that this will apply to all Eclipse editors, not just the PHP editor.
