I have a scenario where almost all of the tables have issues with the PK value as follows. This results is a database error or the violation of the PK insert.
When using the DBCC CheckIdent it displays an inconsistency between the next value and the current one.
Can anyone have a reason for the mismatch happening on several tables?
Since this database is then replicate, I'm afraid this error will propagate across the environment.
I adapted this script to fix it, but really trying to figure out the root of the problem.

As simple as this:
create table testid (
id int not null identity (1,1) primary key,
data varchar (3)
)
insert into testid (data) values ('abc'),('cde')
DBCC CHECKIDENT ('testid', RESEED, 1)
insert into testid (data) values ('bad')

Context: I am exploring a new database (in MS SQL server), and I want to know for each table, all columns that have null values.
I.e. result would look something like this:
table column nulls
Tbl1 Col1 8
I have found this code here on stackoverflow, that makes a table of table-columnnames - without the WHERE statement which is my addition.
I tried to filter for nulls in WHERE statement, but then the table ends up empty, and I see why - i am checking if the col name is actually null, and not its contents. But can't figure out how to proceed.
select schema_name(tab.schema_id) as schema_name,
tab.name as table_name,
col.name as column_name
from sys.tables as tab
inner join sys.columns as col
on tab.object_id = col.object_id
left join sys.types as t
on col.user_type_id = t.user_type_id
-- in this where statement, I am trying to filter for nulls, but i get an empty result. and i know there are nulls
where col.name is null
order by schema_name, table_name, column_id
I also tried this (see 4th line):
select schema_name(tab.schema_id) as schema_name,
tab.name as table_name,
col.name as column_name
,(select count(*) from tab.name where col.name is null) as countnulls
from sys.tables as tab
inner join sys.columns as col
on tab.object_id = col.object_id
left join sys.types as t
on col.user_type_id = t.user_type_id
order by schema_name, table_name, column_id
the last one returns an error "Invalid object name 'tab.name'."
column name can't be null but if you mean nullable column (column that accept null value) that has null value at least so you can use following statement:
declare #schema varchar(255), #table varchar(255), #col varchar(255), #cmd varchar(max)
DECLARE getinfo cursor for
SELECT schema_name(tab.schema_id) as schema_name,tab.name , col.name from sys.tables as tab
inner join sys.columns as col on tab.object_id = col.object_id
where col.is_nullable =1
order by schema_name(tab.schema_id),tab.name,col.name
OPEN getinfo
FETCH NEXT FROM getinfo into #schema,#table,#col

EXEC(#cmd)
FETCH NEXT FROM getinfo into #schema,#table,#col
END
CLOSE getinfo
DEALLOCATE getinfo
that use cursor on all nullable columns in every table in the Database then check if this column has at least one null value if yes will select schema Name, table name, column name and all records that has null value in this column
but if you want to get only count of nulls you can use the following statement:
declare #schema varchar(255), #table varchar(255), #col varchar(255), #cmd varchar(max)
DECLARE getinfo cursor for
SELECT schema_name(tab.schema_id) as schema_name,tab.name , col.name from sys.tables as tab
inner join sys.columns as col on tab.object_id = col.object_id
where col.is_nullable =1
order by schema_name(tab.schema_id),tab.name,col.name
OPEN getinfo
FETCH NEXT FROM getinfo into #schema,#table,#col
WHILE ##FETCH_STATUS = 0
BEGIN
set #schema = QUOTENAME(#schema)
set #table = QUOTENAME(#table)
set #col = QUOTENAME(#col)
SELECT #cmd = 'IF EXISTS (SELECT 1 FROM '+ #schema +'.'+ #table +' WHERE ' + #col + ' IS NULL) BEGIN SELECT '''+#schema+''' as schemaName, '''+#table+''' as tablename, '''+#col+''' as columnName, count(*) as nulls FROM '+ #schema +'.'+ #table +' WHERE ' + #col + ' IS NULL end'
EXEC(#cmd)
FETCH NEXT FROM getinfo into #schema,#table,#col
END
that use cursor on all nullable columns in every table in the Database then check if this column has at least one null value if yes will select schema Name, table name, column name and count all records that has null value in this column

I am not able to run this procedure.
Can you please help me where I have done wrong?
I am using squirrel and face the same question as you.
until I found that:
-- Note that if you want to create the function under Squirrel SQL,
-- you must go to Sessions->Session Properties
-- then SQL tab and change the Statement Separator from ';' to something else
-- (for intance //). Otherwise Squirrel SQL sends one piece to the server
-- that stops at the first encountered ';', and the server cannot make
-- sense of it. With the separator changed as suggested, you type everything
-- as above and end with
-- ...
-- end;
-- $$ language plpgsql
-- //
--
-- You can then restore the default separator, or use the new one for
-- all queries ...

I need to get a tree of related nodes given a certain node, but not necessary top node. I've got a solution using two CTEs, since I am struggling to squeeze it all into one CTE :). Might somebody have a sleek solution to avoid using two CTEs? Here is some code that I was playing with:
DECLARE #temp AS TABLE (ID INT, ParentID INT)
INSERT INTO #temp
SELECT 1 ID, NULL AS ParentID
UNION ALL
SELECT 2, 1
UNION ALL
SELECT 3, 2
UNION ALL
SELECT 4, 3
UNION ALL
SELECT 5, 4
UNION ALL
SELECT 6, NULL
UNION ALL
SELECT 7, 6
UNION ALL
SELECT 8, 7
DECLARE #startNode INT = 4
;WITH TheTree (ID,ParentID)
AS (
SELECT ID, ParentID
FROM #temp
WHERE ID = #startNode
UNION ALL
SELECT t.id, t.ParentID
FROM #temp t
JOIN TheTree tr ON t.ParentID = tr.ID
)
SELECT * FROM TheTree
;WITH Up(ID,ParentID)
AS (
SELECT t.id, t.ParentID
FROM #temp t
WHERE t.ID = #startNode
UNION ALL
SELECT t.id, t.ParentID
FROM #temp t
JOIN Up c ON t.id = c.ParentID
)
--SELECT * FROM Up
,TheTree (ID,ParentID)
AS (
SELECT ID, ParentID
FROM Up
WHERE ParentID is null
UNION ALL
SELECT t.id, t.ParentID
FROM #temp t
JOIN TheTree tr ON t.ParentID = tr.ID
)
SELECT * FROM TheTree
thanks
Meh. This avoids using two CTEs, but the result is a brute force kludge that hardly qualifies as "sleek" as it won’t be efficient if your table is at all sizeable. It will:
Recursively build all possible hierarchies
As you build them, flag the target NodeId as you find it
Return only the targeted tree
I threw in column “TreeNumber” on the off-chance the TargetId appears in multiple hierarchies, or if you’d ever have multiple values to check in one pass. “Depth” was added to make the output a bit more legible.
A more complex solution like #John’s might do, and more and subtler tricks could be done with more detailed table sturctures.
DECLARE #startNode INT = 4
;WITH cteAllTrees (TreeNumber, Depth, ID, ParentID, ContainsTarget)
AS (
SELECT
row_number() over (order by ID) TreeNumber
,1
,ID
,ParentID
,case
when ID = #startNode then 1
else 0
end ContainsTarget
FROM #temp
WHERE ParentId is null
UNION ALL
SELECT
tr.TreeNumber
,tr.Depth + 1
,t.id
,t.ParentID
,case
when tr.ContainsTarget = 1 then 1
when t.ID = #startNode then 1
else 0
end ContainsTarget
FROM #temp t
INNER JOIN cteAllTrees tr
ON t.ParentID = tr.ID
)
SELECT
TreeNumber
,Depth
,ID
,ParentId

where TreeNumber in (select TreeNumber from cteAllTrees where ContainsTarget = 1)

Here is a technique where you can select the entire hierarchy, a specific node with all its children, and even a filtered list and how they roll.

I'm trying to call sp_spaceused to get the number of rows in a few specific tables that I want to monitor, but I'm trying to avoid using a cursor.
I've made a table to hold all the tables I want to monitor:
CREATE TABLE MonitoredTable
(
MonitoredTableID INT PRIMARY KEY IDENTITY(1, 1) NOT NULL
, DatabaseName NVARCHAR(128) NOT NULL
, SchemaName NVARCHAR(128) NOT NULL
, TableName NVARCHAR(128) NOT NULL
, RowNumberThreshold INT NOT NULL
, IsActive BIT NOT NULL
)
My problem is: I want to create a function that will only return MonitoredTableIDs for tables that their row counts exceed the defined RowNumberThreshold.
Here's what I'd like to do, but this is invalid SQL:
CREATE FUNCTION dbo.GetTablesLargerThanThreshold()
RETURNS #tablesLargerThanThreshold TABLE
(
MonitoredTableID INT NOT NULL
)
AS
BEGIN
INSERT INTO #tablesLargerThanThreshold
SELECT MonitoredTableID
FROM MonitoredTable
WHERE IsActive = 1
AND (SELECT [rows] FROM (EXEC sp_spaceused DatabaseName + '.' + SchemaName + '.' + TableName)) > RowNumberThreshold
RETURN
END
Is there a way I can check if the number of rows in a MonitoredTable are greater than the defined RowNumberThreshold without resorting to a cursor?
Something like this?

AND t.type = 'U' -- User-defined table
AND t.is_ms_shipped = 0 -- sys.object was not created by an internal SQL Server component
Disclaimer: I'm dealing with a rather old legacy system so any comments telling me about poor design are redundant, although I do genuinely appreciate any such sentiment. There is a new version that solves most legacy problems but we still have to maintain the old system, so basically, we have to manage for now.
I have a table that looks like this (yes, that is a single column, I know):
And I need a view (for reporting purposes) that will dynamically process the data in said table and return this:
The values are \n-delimited (shudder) and you can assume there will always be the same number of values in each cell (9 in the example, although other databases could have 4 or 12 or any number), although I suppose having NULL-insertion in the event of missing values couldn't hurt. They will also always be in a matching order (as in the example, 'AUD', 'Australian Dollar', and '$' are all the first values in their respective cells, and so on).
I've found various approaches to splitting a single cell out into a view, but nothing that covers merging data in such a way as I require. Sitting at home with a cold has not helped my research capabilities. Help me StackOverflow, you're my only hope!
Bonus points for tidy, relatively readable SQL examples, although I'm anticipating messiness as a natural by-product of the hackish nature of my required solution.
Something like this. I didn't take the time to build out the tables, but it should be fairly obvious where you can replace my variables with your rows. You will also want to do a replace char(10) where I have used commas. You could package it up in a table valued function and then call as a view.

pivot (max(Item) for Col in (Code,Name,Symbol)) pvt
group by ItemNumber
to give us:

ON s.ID = n.ID
Cleanup:
IF OBJECT_ID(N'tempdb..#TEMP') > 0
BEGIN
DROP TABLE #TEMP
END
IF OBJECT_ID(N'tempdb..#table') > 0
BEGIN
DROP TABLE #table
END
Because I needed a view, this ended up being my solution:
CREATE FUNCTION [dbo].[CurrencyTableGenerator]()
RETURNS
#CurrencyTable TABLE(
Code NVARCHAR(250)
,Name NVARCHAR(250)
,Symbol NVARCHAR(250)
)
AS
BEGIN
DECLARE #xml1 XML
DECLARE #xml2 XML
DECLARE #xml3 XML
DECLARE #C1 NVARCHAR(250)
DECLARE #C2 NVARCHAR(250)
DECLARE #c3 NVARCHAR(250)
SET #c1 = (SELECT ...)
SET #c2 = (SELECT ...)
SET #c3 = (SELECT ...)
SET #xml1 = N'<root><r>' + REPLACE(#c1, CHAR(10), '</r><r>') + '</r></root>';
SET #xml2 = N'<root><r>' + REPLACE(#c2, CHAR(10), '</r><r>') + '</r></root>';
SET #xml3 = N'<root><r>' + REPLACE(#c3, CHAR(10), '</r><r>') + '</r></root>';
INSERT INTO #CurrencyTable
SELECT Code.Code, Name.Name, Symbol.Symbol
FROM
(SELECT ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY ##ROWCOUNT) AS ck,
c.value('.', 'VARCHAR(250)') AS [Code]
FROM #xml1.nodes('//root/r') AS a(c)) AS Code
INNER JOIN
(SELECT ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY ##ROWCOUNT) AS nk,
n.value('.', 'VARCHAR(250)') AS [Name]
FROM #xml2.nodes('//root/r') AS a(n)) AS Name ON Code.ck = Name.nk
INNER JOIN
(SELECT ROW_NUMBER() OVER (ORDER BY ##ROWCOUNT) AS sk,
s.value('.', 'VARCHAR(250)') AS [Symbol]
FROM #xml3.nodes('//root/r') AS a(s)) AS Symbol ON Symbol.sk = Name.nk
RETURN
END
GO
CREATE VIEW [dbo].[CurrencyView]
AS
SELECT * FROM [dbo].[CurrencyTableGenerator]()
GO
Thanks to RThomas for the function.
