how do i compare values and assign condition in tableau? - tableau-api

I have a table with members, date and results. The date represent the month for which all the results were generated for various members. Table stores results for multiple months. Now, i want to compare results of current month with last month for particular member and assign “equal” , “>” or “<” sign based on their values. How can i do that in tableau?
Any help is greatly appreciated!
Thank you.

You can use the lookup function. Assuming you have below data:
you can create a lookup function in tableau with below expression:
LOOKUP(sum([Result]),-1)
Note you need to use an aggregate function on your measure
After creating a lookup column create a calculated field to do data comparison:
This should give you the result you are looking for:
You can edit the table calculations to define the reset level for your calculation:

Spotfire - Filtering a Table by Values in a Calculated Column

I am trying to filter a table visualization of all of my data by looking to see if a Study Number contains Activity A. If a Study Number contains Activity A then I want to filter for all rows containing those Study Numbers even if the Activity is not A. See mock data below. In my real data set I have ~55,000 rows.
I have created a calculated to return Study Numbers if Activity= A but I am not sure where to go from there. Thanks for any help.
If(UniqueConcatenate([Activity]) OVER ([Study Number])~="A","Y","N")
Will give you this resulting column that you can then filter on (or you can use the formula as a Data Limiting Expression:

How to filter by current month automatically on pivot table google sheets?

As a data analyst, I would like to see the report in a pivot table automatically for the current month, so that I can take a look at it and don't have to change the date filter manually.
This is the formula to show the first day of the current month. (Which is the criteria I need, first of the current month)
=EOMONTH(today(),-1)+1
It works when I put this formula in any cell.
But when I put it in the pivot "filter by condition" option it doesn't work.
This is what I tried.
Text is exactly =EOMONTH(today(),-1)+1 (In formula box)
The date is exactly =EOMONTH(today(),-1)+1 (In formula box)
Here a screenshot of the options
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
I've never had great luck with the pivot table filter criteria in Sheets, I typically filter the data first if it's more advanced or use aggregating functions. In the Sheets pivot tables are better for quick analysis than dashboards.
There's probably a few ways to do it, but one of the easier ways would be to duplicate the data tab, clear the data and use a filter function to retrieve data. Update the Pivot table data source to the new tab. This will always only be the current month's data.
Basically you filter the data before the pivot table, with the [filter function][1].
=Filter(data , [date col]>=EOMONTH(today(),-1)+1 , [date col]< date(year(today()), month(today())+1,1)
You can also add a month column to the data and then filter on that column, however each month you would need to update the month filter in the pivot table.
=date(year([date cell]),Month([date cell]),1)
If you're using it for a 'dashboard' of sorts, I would generally recommend to create it yourself with aggregating formulas (sumifs, countifs, ect) and then you can use the more complex filters.
try custom formula:
=MONTH(A2)=MONTH(TODAY())
where A2 is first cell of column containing valid dates
You can try to Filter by a Custom Formula:
=month(DatePurchase)=month(TODAY())
Where DatePurchase is the Field Name.

DAX: Distinct and then aggregate twice

I'm trying to create a Measure in Power BI using DAX that achieves the below.
The data set has four columns, Name, Month, Country and Value. I have duplicates so first I need to dedupe across all four columns, then group by Month and sum up the value. And then, I need to average across the Month to arrive at a single value. How would I achieve this in DAX?
I figured it out. Reply by #OscarLar was very close but nested SUMMARIZE causes problems because it cannot aggregate values calculated dynamically within the query itself (https://www.sqlbi.com/articles/nested-grouping-using-groupby-vs-summarize/).
I kept the inner SUMMARIZE from #OscarLar's answer changed the outer SUMMARIZE with a GROUPBY. Here's the code that worked.
AVERAGEX(GROUPBY(SUMMARIZE(Data, Data[Name], Data[Month], Data[Country], Data[Value]), Data[Month], "Month_Value", sumx(CURRENTGROUP(), Data[Value])), [Month_Value])
Not sure I completeley understood the question since you didn't provide example data or some DAX code you've already tried. Please do so next time.
I'm assuming parts of this can not (for reasons) be done using power query so that you have to use DAX. Then I think this will do what you described.
Create a temporary data table called Data_reduced in which duplicate rows have been removed.
Data_reduced =
SUMMARIZE(
'Data';
[Name];
[Month];
[Country];
[Value]
)
Then create the averaging measure like this
AveragePerMonth =
AVERAGEX(
SUMMARIZE(
'Data_reduced';
'Data_reduced'[Month];
"Sum_month"; SUM('Data_reduced'[Value])
);
[Sum_month]
)
Where Data is the name of the table.

Identifying next closest record by date in tableau

I have a table of users and another table of transactions.
The transactions all have a date against them. What I am trying to ascertain for each user is the average time between transactions.
User | Transaction Date
-----+-----------------
A | 2001-01-01
A | 2001-01-10
A | 2001-01-12
Consider the above transactions for user A. I am basically looking for the distance from one transaction to the next chronologically to determine the distances.
There are 9 days between transactions one and two; and there are 2 days between transactions three and four. The average of these is obviously 4.5, so I would want to identify the average time between user A's transactions to be 4.5 days.
Any idea of how to achieve this in Tableau?
I am trying to create a calculated field for each transaction to identify the date of the "next" transaction but I am struggling.
{ FIXED [user id] : MIN(IF [Transaction Date] > **this transaction date** THEN [Transaction Date]) }
I am not sure what to replace this transaction date with or whether this is the right approach at all.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
LODs dont have access to previous values directly, so you need to create a self join in your data connection. Follow below steps to achieve what you want.
Create a self join with your data with following criteria
Create an LOD calculation as below
{FIXED [User],[Transaction Date]:
MIN(DATEDIFF('day',[Transaction Date],[Transaction Date (Data1)]))
}
Build the View
PS: If you want to improve the performance, Custom SQL might be the way.
The only type of calculation that can take order sequence into account (e.g., when the value for a calculated field depends on the value of the immediately preceding row) is a table calc. You can't use an LOD calc for this kind of problem.
You'll need to understand how partitioning and addressing works with table calcs, along with specifying your sort order criteria. See the online help. You can then do something like, for example, define days_since_last_transaction as:
if first() > 0 then min([Transaction Date]) -
lookup(min([Transaction Date]), -1) end
If you have very large data or for other reasons want to do your calculations at the database instead of in Tableau by a table calc, then you use SQL windowing (aka analytical) queries instead via Tableau's custom SQL.
Please attach an example workbook and anything you tried along with the error you have.
This might not be useful if you cannot set User ID Field as a filter.
So, you can set
User ID
as a filter. Then following the steps mentioned in here will lead you to calculating difference between any two dates. Ideally if you select any one value in the filter, the calculated field from the link should give you the difference in the dates that you have in the transaction dates column.

Can not sort month-year column?

I have a date column. I created Month-Year column in my report using the following expression, but I am not able to sort month-year wise.
=MonthName(Month(Fields!new_sitevisiteddateutc.Value))& "-"& Year(Fields!new_sitevisiteddateutc.Value)
I would like to have MAY-2009 JUNE-2009 JANUARY-2011 MARCH-2011, however I am getting JUNE-2009 MARCH-2011 MAY-2009 JANUARY-2011.
Can someone help me with this?
In the table properties you can add multiple sorting fields and thier order.
Sort by year first and then month.
=Year(Fields!new_sitevisiteddateutc.Value)
=Month(Fields!new_sitevisiteddateutc.Value)
