I have a Powershell script. My ultimate goal is to compare the two Excel files and highlight differences in both versions. Part of my "preparatory code" is this:

My problem is that the parameter call to the GenerateData functions of the $OutFile variables won't work for some reason. All the other parameters appear to be passed successfully, e.g. the WorkBooks. But if I insert a Write-Host $OutFile at the beginning of the GenerateData function, the string is empty (which means it doesn't get passed, if I am not mistaken).
I am sure this is easily explained, but I just can't seem to figure this one out.

I got it. My problem was the syntax in the main method. Being caught up in other languages, I thought I needed parentheses and commas to pass arguments. Yet, it's much simpler with Powershell:

This did the trick! The only weird thing about it is that Powershell doesn't throw an error, if you stick to the parentheses-comma style of coding. The argument simply doesn't get passed.

This has been driving me nuts for days.... I have a powershell script that converts all .doc files in a target directory to PDF's using Word SaveAs interop.
The script works fine when run within context of the logged in user, but errors with "You cannot call a method on a null-valued expression." when I try to execute the script using a service account (via task scheduler, run as another user)... service account has local admin rights.
The exception occurs at this line: $Doc.SaveAs([ref]$Name.value,[ref]17)

If you are certain the service account has access to Word, then I think the exception you encounter is in the [ref] while doing the SaveAs().
AKAIK only Office versions below 2010 need [ref], versions above do not.
Next I think your code can be tydied up somewhat, for instance by releasing the com objects ($Doc and $Word) inside the finally block, as that is always executed.
Also, there is no need to perform a Get-ChildItem twice.
Something like this:

Then, there is the question of $SuccessPath. You never use it. Is it your intention to save the PDF files in that path? If so, change the line

As #lee_Daily pointed out you would need to have different code to perform a find and replace in different file types. Here is an example of how you could go about doing that:

I would suggest learning the ImportExcel module too, it is a great tool which i use a lot.

When designating a Range by the start and end position it's necessary to do so relative to the document. The code above refers to a Paragraphs collection. In addition, it uses SetRange, but should only use the Range method. So:

I have a script that I've been working on to provide parsing of SCCM log files. This script takes a computername and a location on disk to build a dynamic parameter list and then present it to the user to choose the log file they want to parse. Trouble is I cannot seem to get the ValidateSet portion of the dynamic parameter to provide values to the user. In addition the script won't display the -log dynamic parameter when attempting to call the function.
When you run it for the first time you are not presented with the dynamic parameter Log as I mentioned above. If you then use -log and then hit tab you’ll get the command completer for the files in the directory you are in. Not what you’d expect; you'd expect that it would present you the Logfile names that were gathered during the dynamic parameter execution.

The problem is that you have all the dynamic logic inside scriptblock in the if statement, and it handles the parameter addition only if the path provided contains a semicolon (':').
You could change it to something like:

I'm trying convert a bunch of pictures and videos, but when I convert it to a new format I obviously lose the properties of the original file. I'd like to be able to read the "Date taken" property from the old file and update it on the new one using powershell.
I can't test it right now (don't have any images with XIF data laying around, but I think this should work:

In general, you can access any extended property for a file shown in explorer through the shell GetDetailsOf method. Here's a short example, adapted from another answer:
