How to run confluent-5.3.2-2.12 platform? - apache-kafka

Environment:
CentOS7
openjdk version "1.8.0_181"
I downloaded confluent-5.3.2-2.12.tar.gz and extracted to /opt/confluent.
I am following "Installing and Running KSQL | Level Up your KSQL by Confluent" (https://youtu.be/icwHpPm-TCA).
Executed the following commands:
[root#srvr0 ~]# cd /opt/confluent/confluent-5.3.2/bin/
[root#srvr0 bin]# confluent start
bash: confluent: command not found...
Update1:
With reference to, https://docs.confluent.io/current/quickstart/ce-quickstart.html, executed the following commands:
curl -L https://cnfl.io/cli | sh -s -- -b /opt/confluent/confluent-5.3.2/bin
/opt/confluent/confluent-5.3.2/bin/confluent-hub install --no-prompt confluentinc/kafka-connect-datagen:latest
/opt/confluent/confluent-5.3.2/bin/confluent local start

############################# Log Flush Policy #############################
# Messages are immediately written to the filesystem but by default we only fsync() to sync
# the OS cache lazily. The following configurations control the flush of data to disk.
# There are a few important trade-offs here:
# 1. Durability: Unflushed data may be lost if you are not using replication.
# 2. Latency: Very large flush intervals may lead to latency spikes when the flush does occur as there will be a lot of data to flush.
# 3. Throughput: The flush is generally the most expensive operation, and a small flush interval may lead to excessive seeks.
# The settings below allow one to configure the flush policy to flush data after a period of time or
# every N messages (or both). This can be done globally and overridden on a per-topic basis.
# The number of messages to accept before forcing a flush of data to disk

# The following configurations control the disposal of log segments. The policy can
# be set to delete segments after a period of time, or after a given size has accumulated.
# A segment will be deleted whenever *either* of these criteria are met. Deletion always happens
# from the end of the log.
# The minimum age of a log file to be eligible for deletion due to age

Please help me in resolving the issue!

It's not clear where srvr0:9092 is defined; I suggest reviewing your server.properties file to fix the connection strings.
You don't need to run confluent at all. You can follow the base Apache Kafka guides for running both Zookeeper and Kafka
zookeeper-server-start + kafka-server-start
Or you can use Confluent's APT/YUM repos rather than just extracting tarballs, then use systemctl to control services.
Or, using Docker is another way to get started quickly.

Kafka expectantly shutting down. License topic could not be created

On Kafka startup multiple messages are logged to kafka/logs/kafkaServer.out and contain:
INFO [Admin Manager on Broker 0]: Error processing create topic
request CreatableTopic(name='_confluent-license', numPartitions=1,
replicationFactor=3, assignments=[],
configs=[CreateableTopicConfig(name='cleanup.policy',
value='compact'), CreateableTopicConfig(name='min.insync.replicas',
value='2')]) (kafka.server.AdminManager)
After approx 15 minutes Kafka shuts down and outputted to
kafka/logs/kafkaServer.out is :
org.apache.kafka.common.errors.InvalidReplicationFactorException: Replication factor: 3 larger than available brokers: 1.

[2020-12-08 04:04:15,952] INFO [KafkaServer id=0] shutting down (kafka.server.KafkaServer)
It appears Kafka shuts down because the replication factor is set to 3 for the topic _confluent-license ? I'm not creating the topic _confluent-license, is this created as part of Kafka startup for licensing check ?
In attempt to fix I've modified /v5.5.0/etc/kafka/server.properties so that replication factor is 1 for internal topics:
############################# Internal Topic Settings #############################
# The replication factor for the group metadata internal topics "__consumer_offsets" and "__transaction_state"
# For anything other than development testing, a value greater than 1 is recommended for to ensure availability such as 3.
offsets.topic.replication.factor=1
transaction.state.log.replication.factor=1
instead of 3 :
#offsets.topic.replication.factor=3
#transaction.state.log.replication.factor=3
But this does not fix the issue and same logs are generated. The replication factor of __consumer_offsets is still 3. How to reduce the replication factor of topic _confluent-license from 3 to 1 ? Or could there be an alternative issue that is causing Kafka to shutdown ?
You should change the property confluent.license.topic.replication.factor by default it is 3.
(kafka.server.KafkaServer)
org.apache.kafka.common.errors.TimeoutException: License topic could
not be created Caused by:
org.apache.kafka.common.errors.InvalidReplicationFactorException:

The above error is due to the license topic having a default replication factor as 3. The same can be configured with confluent.license.topic.replication.factor to be equal to 1 if you have only 1 broker. The documentation for the same is here.
[2020-12-08 07:46:02,241] ERROR Error checking or creating metrics topic (io.confluent.metrics.reporter.ConfluentMetricsReporter)

The above error is due to the Confluent Metrics Reporter being enabled. The replication factor for the metric topic is defaulted at 3 and can be configured with confluent.metrics.reporter.topic.replicas to be 1 if you have just one broker. The documentation for the same is here.
The property confluent.license.topic.replication.factor is not working as expected.
Instead, we can try anyone of these properties confluent.license.replication.factor=1 or confluent.license.admin.replication.factor=1 if the number of broker is 1. This property is not in the documentation.

Kafka brokers not starting up

I have 2 broker cluster of kafka 0.10.1 running up previously on my development servers with zookeeper 3.3.6 correctly.
I recently tried upgrading broker version to latest kafka 2.3.0 but it didn't start.
There is nothing much changed in the configuration.
Can anybody direct me what possibly could go wrong. Why brokers are not getting started?
Changed server.properties on broker server 1
broker.id=1
log.dirs=/mnt/kafka_2.11-2.3.0/logs
zookeeper.connect=local1:2181,local2:2181
listeners=PLAINTEXT://local1:9092
advertised.listeners=PLAINTEXT://local1:9092
Changed server.properties on broker server 2
broker.id=2
log.dirs=/mnt/kafka_2.11-2.3.0/logs
zookeeper.connect=local1:2181,local2:2181
listeners=PLAINTEXT://local2:9092
advertised.listeners=PLAINTEXT://local2:9092
NOTE:
1. Zookeeper is running on both servers
2. Kafka directories namely /brokers, /brokers/ids, /consumers etc are getting created.
3. Nothing is getting registered under /brokers/ids. Zookeeper CLI get /brokers/ids returns
[]
4. Command lsof -i tcp:9082 returns
COMMAND PID USER FD TYPE DEVICE SIZE/OFF NODE NAME
java 18290 cass 118u IPv6 52133 0t0 TCP local2:9092 (LISTEN)
4. logs/server.log has no errors logged.
5. No more logs are getting appended to server.log.

From the docs regarding ZooKeeper
Stable version
The current stable branch is 3.4 and the latest release of that branch is 3.4.9.
Upgrading zookeeper version to latest 3.5.5 helped and Kafka broker started correctly.
It would have been great if docs had stated the incompatibility with previous zookeeper version.
PS: Answer added to help someone struck with similar issue because of zookeeper version.

Troubleshooting for kafka offline partitions

After unexpected shutdown of brokers, some of the topic partitions remain offline even if all the brokers are back up and running. Does anyone know the solution for this issue ?

2019-05-17T10:40:32,380 [myid:] - WARN [controller-event-thread:Logging$class#85] - [Controller 3]: Partition [topic,9] failed to complete preferred replica leader election. Leader is -1
My colleague and I just ran into a similar problem, however, we were trying to delete a topic that had offline partitions. The key to your problem is that your leader is -1.
The way we fixed this was by manually editing the znode in Zookeeper to point the leader to a broker that was online and doing a rolling restart of the cluster. Using the Zookeeper cli get the following znode:
/brokers/topics/<my-topic>/partitions/0/state.
In our case it returned:
{"controller_epoch":52,"leader":-1,"version":1,"leader_epoch":35,"isr":[5]}
Notice that the leader is -1. You might try updating the znode, setting the leader to a broker that is up and running.

org.apache.kafka.common.errors.NotLeaderForPartitionException: This server is not the leader for that topic-partition

We are running Kafka (vesion kafka_2.11-0.10.1.0) in a 2 node cluster.
We have 2 producers (Java API) acting on different topics. Each topic has single partition.
The topic where we had this issue, has one consumer running.
This set up has been running fine for 3 months, and we saw this issue. All the suggested cases/solutions for this issue in other forums don't seem to apply for my scenario.

We haven't enabled retries for the messages, because this is transactional data and we want to maintain the order.

value.serializer : org.apache.kafka.common.serialization.StringSerializer
We are connecting to server1 at both producer and consumer.
The controller log at server2 indicates there is some shutdown happened at during sametime, but I dont understand why this happened.
