I come across two phrases with respect to ordering,
Messages sent by a producer to a particular topic partition will be
appended in the order they are sent. That is, if a record M1 is sent
by the same producer as a record M2, and M1 is sent first, then M1
will have a lower offset than M2 and appear earlier in the log.
Another
(config param) max.in.flight.requests.per.connection - The maximum number of
unacknowledged requests the client will send on a single connection
before blocking. Note that if this setting is set to be greater than
1 and there are failed sends, there is a risk of message re-ordering
due to retries (i.e., if retries are enabled).
The question is, will the order still be retained to a particular partition if there are failed sends like mentioned #2 ? if there is a potential issue with one message , all the following messages will be dropped "to retain the order" per partition or the "correct" messages will be sent and failed messages will be notified to the application ?

As written in the documentation part you have copied, there is a risk that the ordering is changed.
Imagine, you have a topic with e.g. one partition. You set the retries to 100 and the max.in.flight.requests.per.connection to 5 which is greater than one. As a note, retries will only make sense if you set the acks to 1 or "all".
If you plan to produce the following messages in the order K1, K2, K3, K4, K5 and it takes your producer some time to
actually create the batch and
make a request to the broker and
wait for the acknowledgement of the broker
you could have up to 5 requests in parallel (based on the setting of max.in.flight.request.per.connection). Now, producing "K3" has some issues and it goes into the retry-loop, the messages K4 and K5 can be produced as the request was already in flight.
Your topic would end up with messages in that order: K1, K2, K4, K5, K3.
In case you enable idempotency in the Kafka Producer, the ordering would still be guaranteed as explained in Ordering guarantees when using idempotent Kafka Producer

Allowing retries without setting max.in.flight.requests.per.connection
to 1 will potentially change the ordering of records because if two

According it there are two types of producer configs possible to achieve ordering guarantee:
max.in.flight.requests.per.connection=1 // can impact producer throughput
or alternative
enable.idempotence=true

max.retries // to be greater than 0

Can anybody explain how second configuration achieves order guarantee? Also in the second config exactly-once semantics enabled.
idempotence:(Exactly-once in order semantics per partition)
Idempotent delivery enables the producer to write a message to Kafka exactly
once to a particular partition of a topic during the lifetime of a
single producer without data loss and order per partition.
Idempotent is one of the key features to achieve Exactly-once Semantics in Kafka. To set “enable.idempotence=true” eventually get exactly-once semantics per partition, meaning no duplicates, no data loss for a particular partition. If an error occurred even producer send messages multiple times will get written to Kafka once.
Kafka producer concept of PID and Sequence Number to achieve idempotent as explained below:
PID and Sequence Number
Idempotent producers use product id(PID) and sequence number while producing messages. The producer keeps incrementing the sequence number on each message published which map with unique PID. The broker always compares the current sequence number with the previous one and it rejects if the new one is not +1 greater than the previous one which avoids duplication and the same time if more than greater show lost in messages.
In a failure scenario it will still maintain sequence number and avoid duplication as shown below:
Note: When the producer restarts, new PID gets assigned. So the idempotency is promised only for a single producer session
If you are using enable.idempotence=true you can keep max.in.flight.requests.per.connection up to 5 and you can achieve order guarantee which brings better parallelism and improve performance.
Idempotence feature introduced in Kafka 0.11+ before we can achieve some level level of guaranteed using max.in.flight.requests.per.connection with retries and Acks setting:
max.in.flight.requests.per.connection to 1
max.retries bigger number
acks=all
max.in.flight.requests.per.connection=1: to make sure that while messages are retrying, additional messages will not be sent.
This gives guarantee at-least-once and comes with cost on performance and throughput and that's encourage introduced enable.idempotence feature to improve the performance and at the same time guarantee ordering.
exactly_once: To achieve exactly_once along with idempotence we need to set transaction as read_committed and will not allow to overwrite following parameters:
isolation.level:read_committed( Consumers will always read committed
data only)
enable.idempotence=true (Producer will always haveidempotency enabled)
MAX_IN_FLIGHT_REQUESTS_PER_CONNECTION=5 (Producer will
always have one in-flight request per connection)
enable.idempotence is a newer setting that was introduced as part of kip-98 (implemented in kafka 0.11+). before it users would have to set max.inflight to 1.
the way it works (abbreviated) is that producers now put sequence numbers on ourgoing produce batches, and brokers keep track of these sequence numbers per producer connected to them. if a broker receives a batch out of order (say batch 3 after 1) it rejects it and expects to see batch 2 (which the producer will retransmit). for complete details you should read kip-98
I was going through kafka documentation and came across
Guarantees
At a high-level, Kafka gives the following guarantees:

I had few questions.
Is it always guaranteed that M1 will have a lower offset than M2 ? what if M1 is retried later than M2 ?
I also understood from various documentations that ordering is not guaranteed, and the consumer has to deal with it.
A possible scenario even with a single partition is:
Producer sends M1
Producer sends M2
M1 is not ack'ed on the first try due to some failure
M2 is delivered
M1 is delivered in a subsequent try.
One easy way to avoid this is through the producer config max.in.flight.requests.per.connection=1.
This of course has performance implications, so it should be used with caution.
Please notice, that ordering guarantees apply at the partition level. So, if you have more than one partition in the topic, you'll need to set the same partition key for messages that you require to appear in order.
For example, if you want to collect messages from various sensors and sensor has it's id, then if you use this ID as message key, ordering of messages from every sensor will be guaranteed on consumers (as no sensor will write messages to more than 1 partition).
To answer your questions:
Yes, M1 will have always offset lower than M2. The offsets are set by broker, so the time of message arrival at the broker is key here.
Ordering is not guaranteed on topic level only

However, if you have multiple messages in flight simultaneously I am not sure how order is determined.
You might want to think about the acks config for your producer as well. There are failure conditions where a message may be missing if the leader goes down after M1 is published and a new leader receives M2. In this case you won't have an out of order condition, but a missing message so it's slightly orthogonal to your original question but something to consider if message guarantees and order are critical to your application.

Overall, designing a system where small differences in order are not that important can really simplify things.

Yes, the Producer should be single threaded. If one uses multiple Producer threads to produce to the same partition, ordering guarantee on the Consumer will still be lost.So, ordering guarantee on the same partition implicitly also means a single Producer thread.
There are two strategies for sending messages in kafka : synchronous and asynchronous.
For synchronous type, it is intuitively that a producer send message one by one to the target partition, thus the message order is guaranteed.
For asynchronous type, messages are send using batching method, that is to say, if M1 is send prior to M2, then M1 is accumulated in the memory first, then the same with M2. So When producer sends batches of messages in a single request, the messages order thus will be guaranteed.
If I set Kafka config param at Producer as:
1. retries = 3
2. max.in.flight.requests.per.connection = 5
then its likely that Messages within one partition may not be in send_order.
Does Kafka takes any extra step to make sure that messages within a partition remains in sent order only

With above configuration, its possible to have out of order messages within a partition ?
Unfortunately, no.
With your current configuration, there is a chance message will arrive unordered because of your retries and max.in.flight.requests.per.connection settings..
With retries config set to greater than 0 you will lose ordering in the following case (just an example with random numbers):
You send a message/batch to partition 0 which is located on broker 0, and brokers 1 and 2 are ISR.
Broker 0 fails, broker 1 becomes leader.
Your message/batch returns a failure and needs to be retried.
Meanwhile, you send next message/batch to partition 0 which is now known to be on broker 1, and this happens before your previous batch actually gets retried.
Message/batch 2 gets acknowledged (succeeds).
Message/batch 1 is re sent and now gets acknowledged too.
Order lost.
I might be wrong, but in this case, reordering can probably happen even with max.in.flight.requests.per.connection set to 1 you can lose message order in case of broker failover, e.g. batch can be sent to the broker earlier than the previous failed batch figures out it should go to that broker too.
Regarding max.in.flight.requests.per.connection and retries being set together it's even simpler - if you have multiple unacknowledged requests to a broker, the first one to fail will arrive unordered.
However, please take into account this is only relevant to situations where a message/batch fails to acknowledge for some reason (sent to wrong broker, broker died etc.)

If I am using Kafka Async producer, assume there are X number of messages in buffer.
When they are actually processed on the client, and if broker or a specific partition is down for sometime, kafka client would retry and if a message is failed, would it mark the specific message as failed and move on to the next message (this could lead to out of order messages) ? Or, would it fail the remaining messages in the batch in order to preserve order?
I next to maintain the ordering, so would ideally want to kafka to fail the batch from the place where it failed, so I can retry from the failure point, how would I achieve that?
Like it says in the kafka documentation about retries
Setting a value greater than zero will cause the client to resend any
record whose send fails with a potentially transient error. Note that
this retry is no different than if the client resent the record upon
receiving the error. Allowing retries will potentially change the
ordering of records because if two records are sent to a single
partition, and the first fails and is retried but the second succeeds,
then the second record may appear first.
So, answering to your title question, no kafka doesn't have order guarantees under async sends.

I think that if you want to send in batch mode, the only way to secure it I would be to set the max.in.flight.requests.per.connection=1 but as the documentation says:
Note that if this setting is set to be greater than 1 and there are
failed sends, there is a risk of message re-ordering due to retries
(i.e., if retries are enabled).
Starting with Kafka 0.11.0, there is the enable.idempotence setting, as documented.
enable.idempotence: When set to true, the producer will ensure that
exactly one copy of each message is written in the stream. If false,
producer retries due to broker failures, etc., may write duplicates of
the retried message in the stream. Note that enabling idempotence
requires max.in.flight.requests.per.connection to be less than or
equal to 5, retries to be greater than 0 and acks must be all. If
these values are not explicitly set by the user, suitable values will
be chosen. If incompatible values are set, a ConfigException will be
thrown.
Type: boolean Default: false
This will guarantee that messages are ordered and that no loss occurs for the duration of the producer session. Unfortunately, the producer cannot set the sequence id, so Kafka can make these guarantees only per producer session.
Have a look at Apache Pulsar if you need to set the sequence id, which would allow you to use an external sequence id, which would guarantee ordered and exactly-once messaging across both broker and producer failovers.
