How do I setup a hy project so that I can use pytest for testing - pytest

I'm trying to test a hy project with pytest but am having trouble with pytest discovering my tests. What needs to be done so that pytest can pick up tests written in hy? I've made the assumption that tests can be written in hy and discovered by pytest because of the native_tests section in the main hy repo. If this is a bad assumption, no need to read on. Please let me know.
My project root looks something like this:
src
.hy program files
tests
__init__.py
test_*.hy test files where each test function is prefixed with test-*
pytest.ini
inside of pytest.ini I have the following:

python_functions = test_* is_test_* hyx_test_* hyx_is_test_*
testpaths = tests
I stole the python_functions section out of the hy repo's setup.cfg

The missing ingredient is Hy's confest.py, which defines hook functions pytest uses to discover tests. For example, we define pytest_collect_file like this:

Overriding collection paths via PyTest plugin

With PyTest, you can limit the scope of test collection by passing directories/files/nodeids as command line arguments, e.g., pytest tests, pytest tests/my_tests.py and pytest tests/my_tests.py::test_1. Is it possible to override this behavior from within a plugin, i.e., to set them to something else programmatically?
So far I've attempted setting file_or_dir to my own list within config.option and config.known_args_namespace from the pytest_configure hook, but this appears to have no effect on anything.
You are probably looking for config.args:
# conftest.py

config.args = ['foo', 'bar/baz.py::test_spam']
Running pytest now will be essentially the same as running pytest foo bar/baz.py::test_spam. However, putting stuff in pytest.ini would be IMO a better solution:

How can I debug my python unit tests within Tox with PUDB?

I'm trying to debug a python codebase that uses tox for unit tests. One of the failing tests is proving difficult due to figure out, and I'd like to use pudb to step through the code.
At first thought, one would think to just pip install pudb then in the unit test code add in import pudb and pudb.settrace(). But that results in a ModuleNotFoundError:

Noticing the .tox project folder leads one to realize there's a site-packages folder within tox, which makes sense since the point of tox is to manage testing under different virtualenv scenarios. This also means there's a tox.ini configuration file, with a deps section that may look like this:

pytest
commands = pytest tests
adding pudb to the deps list should solve the ModuleNotFoundError, but leads to another error:

So, I'm stuck at this point. Is it not possible to use pudb instead of pdb within Tox?
There's a package called pytest-pudb which overrides the pudb entry points within an automated test environment like tox to successfully jump into the debugger.
To use it, just make your tox.ini file have both the pudb and pytest-pudb entries in its testenv dependencies, similar to this:
[tox]
envlist = lint, py3
[testenv]
deps =
pytest
pudb
pytest-pudb
commands = pytest tests
Using the original PDB (not PUDB) could work too. At least it works on Django and Nose testers. Without changing tox.ini, simply add a pdb breakpoint wherever you need, with:
import pdb; pdb.set_trace()
Then, when it get to that breakpoint, you can use the regular PDB commands:
w - print stacktrace
s - step into
n - step over
c - continue
p - print an argument value
a - print arguments of current function

Pytest: collecting 0 items even after following the conventions

I created a test module by following all the conventions, but when I run the test, I get the following message:
collecting 0 items
Here's my directory hierarchy:
integration_tests (Directory)-> tests (Directory)-> test_integration_use_cases.py (python file)
And this is the content of the file:

FYI: I am running this on a development machine (Like vagrant)
so I had the same problem as you have even after following all the recommended conventions. My application structure was as follows;
Application
-- API
app.py
-- docs
-- venv
-- tests
-- unit_test
test_factory
...
...
I, however, resolved the issue by moving the tests directory under the API package so that my application structure looked as below;
Application
-- API
app.py
-- tests
-- unit_test
test_factory
...
-- docs
-- venv
...
Although pytest is supposed to auto-discover the tests, it seems to do that if they are placed in the application root. Check out the pytest for flask

pytest implementing a logfile per test method

I would like to create a separate log file for each test method. And i would like to do this in the conftest.py file and pass the logfile instance to the test method. This way, whenever i log something in a test method it would log to a separate log file and will be very easy to analyse.
I tried the following.
Inside conftest.py file i added this:

The problem here is that pytest_runtest_setup does not have the ability to return anything to the test method. Atleast, i am not aware of it.
So, i thought of creating a fixture method inside the conftest.py file with scope="function" and call this fixture from the test methods. But, the fixture method does not know about the the Pytest.Item object. In case of pytest_runtest_setup method, it receives the item parameter and using that we are able to find out the test method name and test method path.
Please help!
I found this solution by researching further upon webh's answer. I tried to use pytest-logger but their file structure is very rigid and it was not really useful for me. I found this code working without any plugin. It is based on set_log_path, which is an experimental feature.
Pytest 6.1.1 and Python 3.8.4

Notice that the use of Path can be substituted by os.path.join. Moreover, different tests can be set up in different folders and keep a record of all tests done historically by using a timestamp on the filename. One could use the following filename for example:

How to get test name and test result during run time in pytest

I want to get the test name and test result during runtime.
I have setup and tearDown methods in my script. In setup, I need to get the test name, and in tearDown I need to get the test result and test execution time.
Is there a way I can do this?

I have these files in my test directory:

Create a conftest.py file if you don't have one yet and add this:

The hook pytest_runtest_protocol implements the runtest_setup/call/teardown protocol for the given test item, including capturing exceptions and calling reporting hooks. It is called when any test finishes (like startup or teardown or your test).
If you run your script you can see the result and name of the test:
$ py.test ./rest/test_rest_author.py
====== test session starts ======
/test_rest_author.py::TestREST::test_tc15 PASSED
test_tc15 --- passed
======== 1 passed in 1.47 seconds =======

unittest.TestCase.id() this will return the complete Details including class name , method name .
From this we can extract test method name.
Getting the results during can be achieved by checking if there any exceptions in executing the test.
If the test fails then there wil be an exception if sys.exc_info() returns None then test is pass else test will be fail.
Using pytest_runtest_protocol as suggested with fixture marker solved my problem. In my case it was enough just to use reports = runtestprotocol(item, nextitem=nextitem) within my pytest html fixture. So to finalize the item element contains the information you need.
