is there any way to call an external web API from the AnyLogic modelling tool? I'd like to communicate with specific backend on some actions running during the simulation, so it would be cool.

A consulting client will provide a REST API and I need to connect to it through a locally installed on-premises Matlab (not Matlab Production Server), download and crunch some data and then send the results back.
I don't have experience with REST API yet so please excuse if I am mixing terms.
Right now I am trying to understand which is the relevant documentation for me and there are two options I am looking at:
The methods listed here - https://nl.mathworks.com/help/matlab/internet-file-access.html?s_tid=CRUX_lftnav , all relate to a RESTful Web Service. I don't know yet if the client has a REST API that can be categorized as a web service (I am going to use it to access some client data) - would anybody know what the 'standard' use case for a REST API is and if it will likely be considered as a 'web service'? I guess the 'web' service part refers to the HTTP protocol and it does need to be a website?
Then there is a bunch of documentation related specifically for the Matlab Production Server, which seems to me to be a more general version of dealing with REST APIs - https://nl.mathworks.com/help/mps/restful-api-and-json.html
However, if I understand it well, the second option is exclusive to MPS (and this is not what we will be using to access the API - we will be using standard Matlab Standalone desktop version)

p.s. I have read REST api vs REST Webservice vs RESTFul web service and that has cleared some questions on the difference between REST Api and REST API web service but it is still somewhat unclear in my head.
Sounds like you want to use webread and webwrite.
The MPS stuff is where MATLAB acts as the REST API, i.e. MATLAB is the server...
With webread and webwrite you can read/write data to/from an external server that's nothing to do with MATLAB.
Hey guys I need general help with identifying what an intermediate REST layer is called.
I am developing a solution that relies on the user data of a video game company. The company has REST APIs that I can call to gather the data, and I have decided to take the following approach: build a website with React, build an intermediate layer using Spring-boot which will provide APIs for the website and also call the company's APIs to gather the data. Say I want to research best practices for that intermediate layer be it caching for example, I am having trouble narrowing my search down to specifically cater for my architecture.
So what would you call that intermediate solution?

AlchemyAPI provides REST API endpoints for all text-mining and content analysis functionality. You can call those REST APIs from wherever you need, once you know your API key. In Matlab you can interact with RESTful web services using webread and webwrite.
So right now our company has custom SOAP web services that hold functions to do things (e.g. sending emails, getting employee info, etc.) and are connected via Service References.
We want to make the switch to Web API 2, but I'm kind of lost on how we can (or if it's possible) to do that since all of our services interact with SOAP.
I wanted to create brand new Web APIs for each service we have which would hold the methods, but I'm not sure where to start. I've scoured the internet, but I haven't really found anything that answers my question.

well, you can create the Web API Service, and exposes the functions that you need, maybe, this service can be accessed from anywhere, but, the real functionality is on the soap (that can be in a DMZ for example), so, create a class library that consume those services and Web API now use this class library, so Web API will be only a facade.
But, first think, is really necessary have this facade in web api to consume those services?
Remember that if your soap services are built with WCF, WCF has support for HTTP protocol.
I want to develop and application with the Oracle ADF, but I want a RESTful web service that will allow for other clients (a desktop app, a mobile app, etc...). TO help me determine the best way to do this I have two questions:
Does the ADF have some easy way to create a REST service built into the application?
If not, can I create a JAX-RS web service and hook it up in the same container as the ADF application?
I am thinking that because of what the ADF is, it may be best not to try to create a service with it. If so, please alert me of this.
Now with the release of jDeveloper 12.2.1 ADF comes with inbuilt REST Freamework which will solve all kinds of requirements(CRUD Operations, Custom method invocation, Paging, Data Consistency Check etc.)

This will work well for simple use cases, where there is not much complexity behind data entry screens.
However, you must keep in mind that ADF is most powerful when using Business Components and Bindings. Any other combination will decrease your productivity.
