Recently we have started doing some testing of our Kafka connectors to MSK, Amazon's managed Kafka service. Publishing records seem to work fine however not when transactions are enabled.
Our cluster consists of 2 brokers (because we have 2 zones) using the default MSK configuration. We are creating our Java Kafka producer using the following properties:
bootstrap.servers=x.us-east-1.amazonaws.com:9094,y.us-east-1.amazonaws.com:9094
client.id=kafkautil
max.block.ms=5000
request.timeout.ms=5000
security.protocol=SSL
transactional.id=transactions
However when the producer was started with the transactional.id setting which enables transactions, the initTransactions() method hangs:

Looking at the log output we see streams of the following, and it didn't seem like it ever timed out.

As far as I can determine, the broker is available and each of the hosts in the bootstrap.servers property are available. If I connect to each of them and publish without transactions then it works.
Any idea what we are missing?

This turned out to a problem with the default AWS MSK properties and the number of brokers. If you create a Kafka cluster with less than 3 brokers, the following settings will need to be adjusted.
The following settings should be set (I think) to the number of brokers:

Because we have 2 brokers, we ended up with:
default.replication.factor=2

transaction.state.log.replication.factor=2
This seemed to resolve the issue. IMHO this is a real problem with the AWS MSK and the default configuration. They need to auto-generate the default configuration and tune it depending on the number of brokers in the cluster.

I am using AWS MSK for our production workload and we have been noticing some not very clear log messages in cloudwatch. The messages are about the internal communication between brokers (more on cluster setup later):

Our logs are cluttered with these recurring messages. The logs can be found on all three brokers, all referencing the brokerId=2, as per the message above.
I am assuming the instance referenced is one of the MSK brokers.
Whilst the logs are at INFO level and the cluster seems to work fine, I'd like to understand if anyone had to face these sorts of output messages before?
The MSK config is the following:
3 brokers over 3 availability zones
encryption in transit,client_broker = TLS, encryption in cluster
client_authentication sasl I am
cluster properties: auto.create.topics.enable = true, default.replication.factor = 3, num.partitions = 3, delete.topic.enable = true, min.insync.replicas = 2, log.retention.hours = 168, compression.type = gzip
kafka version: 2.7.0
I would be interested to know how to get rid of this log message and if this should be a matter of worry.

I am attempting to use mirrormaker 2 to replicate data between AWS Managed Kafkas (MSK) in 2 different AWS regions - one in eu-west-1 (CLOUD_EU) and the other in us-west-2 (CLOUD_NA), both running Kafka 2.6.1. For testing I am currently trying just to replicate topics 1 way, from EU -> NA.
I am starting a mirrormaker connect cluster using ./bin/connect-mirror-maker.sh and a properties file (included)
This works fine for topics with small messages on them, but one of my topic has binary messages up to 20MB in size. When I try to replicate that topic I get an error every 30 seconds

When logging in DEBUG to get more information we get

It gets stuck in a loop constantly disconnecting with request timeout every 30s and then trying again.
Looking at this, I suspect that the problem is the request.timeout.ms is on the default (30s) and it times out trying to read the topic with many large messages.
I followed the guide at https://github.com/apache/kafka/tree/trunk/connect/mirror to attempt to configure the consumer properties, however, no matter what I set, the timeout for the consumer remains fixed at the default, confirmed both by kafka outputting its config in the log and by timing how long between the disconnect messages. e.g. I set:

In the properties that I start MM-2 with.
based on various guides I have found while looking at this, I have also tried

Recently my kafka producer running as a cronjob on a kubernetes cluster has started doing the following when pushing new messages to the queue:

I am running Kafka 0.10.0 on CDH 5.9, cluster is kerborized.
What I am trying to do is to write messages from a remote machine to my Kafka broker.
The cluster (where Kafka is installed) has internal as well as external IP addresses.
The machines' hostnames within the cluster get resolved to the private IPs, the remote machine resolves the same hostnames to the public IP addreses.
I opened the necessary port 9092 (I am using SASL_PLAINTEXT protocol) from remote machine to Kafka Broker, verified that using telnet.
First Step - in addition to the standard properties for the Kafka Broker, I configured the following:
listeners=SASL_PLAINTEXT://0.0.0.0:9092
advertised.listeners=SASL_PLAINTEXT://<hostname>:9092
I am able to start the console consumer with
kafka-console-consumer --new consumer --topic <topicname> --from-beginning --bootstrap-server <hostname>:9092 --consumer.config consumer.properties
I am able to use my custom producer from another machine within the cluster.
Relevant excerpt of producer properties:
security.protocol=SASL_PLAINTEXT
bootstrap.servers=<hostname>:9092
I am not able to use my custom producer from the remote machine:
Exception org.apache.kafka.common.errors.TimeoutException: Batch containing 1 record(s) expired due to timeout while requesting metadata from brokers for <topicname>-<partition>
using the same producer properties. I am able to telnet the Kafka Broker from the machine and /etc/hosts includes hostnames and public IPs.
Second Step - I modified server.properties:

consumer & producer within the same cluster still run fine (bootstrap
servers are now the internal IP with port 9092)

I have been struggling for the past three days to get this to work, however I am out of ideas :/ My understanding is that advertised.hostnames serves for exactly this purpose, however either I am doing something wrong, or there is something wrong in the machine setup.

I met this issue recently.
In my case , I enabled Kafka ACL, and after disable it by comment this 2 configuration, the problem worked around.

If you only use a SASL_PLAINTEXT listener on the Kafka Broker, you
have to make sure that you have set the

We have a kafka cluster with three brokers (node ids 0,1,2) and a zookeeper setup with three nodes.
We created a topic "test" on this cluster with 20 partitions and replication factor 2. We are using Java producer API to send messages to this topic. One of the kafka broker intermittently goes down after which it is unrecoverable. To simulate the case, we killed one of the broker manually. As per the kafka arch, it is supposed to self recover, but which is not happening. When I describe the topic on the console, I see the number of ISR's reduced to one for few of the partitions as one of the broker killed. Now, whenever we are trying to push messages via the producer API (either Java client or console producer), we are encountering SocketTimeoutException.. One quick look into the logs says, "Unable to fetch the metadata"

From your error Unable to fetch metadata it could mostly be because you could have set the bootstrap.servers in the producer to the broker that has died.
Ideally, you must have more than one broker in the bootstrap.servers list because if one of the broker fails (or is unreachable) then the other could give you the metadata.
FYI: Metadata is the information about a particular topic that tells how many number of partitions it has, their leader brokers, follower brokers etc.
So, when a key is produced to a partition, its corresponding leader broker will be the one to whom the messages will be sent to.
From your question, your ISR set has only one broker. You could try setting the bootstrap.server to this broker.
