Is it possible to use Xcode 11.5 on the latest macOS Big Sur? - swift

I am following Stanfords' CS193p Developing Apps for iOS online course.
I am using Xcode 11.5. I didn't update because that's the version the course instructor (Paul Heagarty) is using. I have to have (for now) this Xcode version.
So I didn't yet updated my macOS to Big Sur, because I am afraid, that I will not be able to use Xcode 11.5 on macOS Big Sur.
Is it possible to use Xcode 11.5 on the latest macOS Big Sur?
Or will Xcode 11.5 it just stop working if I will update to Big Sur?
I have an Intel-based Mac. (not M1 Apple Silicon)
And also - can I have both the Xcode 11.5 & the latest Xcode 12.x version at the same time?

Xcode 11.5 is not officially supported on Big Sur so 11.5 is not guaranteed to run on Big Sur, but you should be able to use 11.5 on Big Sur.
You can have multiple versions of Xcode installed. If you install Xcode from the App Store, make sure you change the name of your Xcode 11.5 install from Xcode to something else, such as Xcode11.5. If you don't change the name of your existing Xcode installation, the new version of Xcode will overwrite the existing version.
Xcode 12.4 runs on Catalina so you can have both Xcode 11.5 and 12.4 installed without having to install Big Sur.

Install XCode 6 on OSX 10.8.5

I have Xcode 4.6 and Xcode 5.1.1 installed on my mac with OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)
Now I want to install Xcode 6 and keep Xcode 4.6 and Xcode 5.1.1 installed.
Is this a good idea or would the old Xcode 4.6 and Xcode 5.1.1 interfere with the new version Xcode 6?
From the official web site:
Xcode 6 requires a Mac running OS X version 10.9.4 or later or 10.10.
Install XCode 6 on OSX 10.8.5 not possible.
For manage all xcode installation, You can install all xcode version in your mac, in application folder rename xcode make retain all xcode version without replace it, but xcode comes with compablility of mac os x version so if you want to install xcode 6 you need to update of mac version 10.9.4 or later. Hope so You can understand.

xcode 4.? + ios 6 works at lion 10.7.2?

I got a working mac os lion 10.7.2 system, and I don't want to upgrade to mountain lion so I can begin ios 6 development. Which Xcode version should I install so I can get ios 6 set up to work? My current Xcode is 4.2, how to install ios 6 sdk and simulator in it?
To do iOS 6 development you need Xcode 4.5. It should still work on Lion and can be installed through the Mac App Store. The iOS 6 SDK and Simulator will be automatically installed with it.

If You have the developer account then download the latest version of xcode with it's .dmg file and also you find the older version of the xcode i would prefer to instal new version of the xcode 4.5 to building the IOS 6 Application.

xCode 4.2.3 can not compile to iOS 5.1.1 (9B208) or iOS 5.1.1 (9B206)

Yesterday after about a whole nights tinkering i manage to compile for 5.1.1
That was after i downgraded from iOS 5.1.1 (9B208) to iOS 5.1.1 (9B206) as a last desperate attempt.
But today afte a restart im back to square one.
When i go to the organizer and select devices from the top menu i get the following text as before:
The version of iOS on “xs iPhone” does not match any of the versions
of iOS supported for development with this installation of the iOS
SDK. Please restore the device to a version of the OS listed below, or
update to the latest version of the iOS SDK; which is available here.
OS Installed on xs iPhone
5.1.1 (9B206)
Xcode Supported iOS Versions Latest
5.0 (9A334)
4.3
4.2
I feel completely dumbfounded that it has to be so vastly complicated getting xcode and iOS go together.
But lets say i clean out xcode and reinstall my iphone.
Is there a safe way to compile for the latest IOS "currently 5.1.1"?
As others have pointed out, you need to install the latest version of Xcode, which is 4.3.2.
We recently had this problem after the latest iOS update and upgrading Xcode solved it just fine.
I had similar problems until I upgraded my Xcode to the latest version. Upgrading should fix your issue.
I had a similar problem and I can not upgrade to Xcode 4.3.x because I am still running Snow Leopard and 4.2 still is the latest Xcode version. I solved the issue after following the steps in this answer

ios 5.1 with xcode 4.2 for iOS development
I updated my iPhone to iOS 5.1.
My operating system is Snow Leopard.
Now I need the sdk 5.1 to develop, with xcode 4.2.
Where can I download it?
Any suggest?
Solution:
Downgrade to ios5.0 or update to Lion
To get Xcode 4.2 on Snow Leopard to run code on a device running 5.1 you can do this:
If you have another Mac running Lion + XCode 4.3.1 you can copy the files from:
/Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/DeviceSupport/5.1 (9B176)
to the equivalent place on your SL Mac: probably
/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/DeviceSupport
and also copy version.plist from the Lion machine in the iPhoneOS.platform folder to the SL machine.
Re-start XCode on the SL machine and re-connect the devices and it seems happy enough.
[Edit: If you don't have access to a machine with Lion+4.3.1 you can get the files out of the 4.3.1 DMG which can be downloaded from Apple here: http://adcdownload.apple.com/Developer_Tools/xcode_4.3.1_for_lion/xcode_4.3.1_for_lion.dmg
then mount the DMG, Show Package Contents on the XCode icon and drill down to
/Volumes/Xcode/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/DeviceSupport to
find the files mentioned above.]
In steps:
Stop XCode on SL machine
Disconnect your iphone
Mount the Xcode 4.3.1 image (.dmg that you can download from Apple dev site)
Show package contentes of the Xcode 4.3.1
copy XCode/Xcode/Contents/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/DeviceSupport/5.1 (9B176)
to <HD>/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/DeviceSupport
copy XCode/Xcode/Contents/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/DeviceSupport/version.plist
to <HD>/Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/
Start Xcode
connect your iphone and it should work.
You can't.
You need to update to Mac OS 10.7 Lion in order to get the latest version of Xcode with the 5.1 SDK.
The last installable version of Xcode on Snow Leopard will be 4.2. Apple really wants developers to keep up to date on everything, whether MacOS or iOS.
If you want to stay on Snow Leopard, download the iOS 5.0.1 firmware of your device on this link : http://www.iphonefirmware.com/firmwares-download.
And do a manual restore on iTunes.
I did it today (March 8, 2012) on my iPad 2 and it works, Apple still seems to sign this iOS version.I guess not for a long time, so do it quickly.
iOS 5.1 is only avalaible in xCode 4.3.1, and its only avalaible in Lion, sorry.
YOu can try changing the version of your mac and faking it to install 4.3.1, but I cannot assure you its going to work...

Why can't I use my older Xcode version after an upgrade?

I had been using Xcode 3.1.3 on Leopard, but I just upgraded to Snow Leopard (10.6.4) and upgraded my Xcode to 3.2 with the iOS 4.0 SDK. Now I'm not able to go back to my older Xcode version to build projects for an older OS version.
How can I build applications that target my original model iPhone, which doesn't support iOS 4.0?
There was options to install xCode version at the time of installing xCode Please also select xCode 3.1.3 and 3.0 at the time of installing.
