I created a calculated field using IF...THEN...END condition and now I'd like to convert the dimension into a measure (sum).
I'd expect such option in the context menu (right-click) but even when I select that field in a sheet as a measure, it seems still to act as a dimension.
Help would be greatly appreciated.
If it's something you need to have as a dimension for your entire flow, just right-click on Epic field and select Convert to Dimension.
Doing so, you'll have that calculated field listed among your original dimensions.
right clict and select "discrete" will turn that into measure. Also, you can drag and drop that column to "Marks" area such as color.

I have a report that is designed to allow users who aren't proficient in Tableau visualize data in the form of a bar graph. There are some drop downs on the side that allow them to select some dimensions. These dimensions then populate the graph. The labels in the graph, however, do not match the dimension name selected, and I was curious how to do this. So for instance on the right hand side Dimension 1 is set to Item Subcategory, and I'd like it to say that in the graph as well, instead of being labeled Dimension 1.
The drop downs on the right are generated from this code in the dimension itself:
If anyone has any ideas on how to do this, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks!
The way I would do this would be to hide the column headers on the sheet itself, or edit their aliases to just a bunch of spaces so it appears blank.
You can then create a sheet with the Dimension 1 parameter on the Text shelf, formatted to look like a column header (or formatted however you want it to look), and add that sheet to the dashboard as a floating sheet. Repeat for the other two dimension parameters, position the sheet above the column so it looks like the header, and there you go! Whenever the parameter changes, the column header will change to match too.
I would note that this only works if the sheet is on a fixed-size dashboard, since floating sheets don't usually play nice with auto-sizing dashboards.
Hi ,
Sorry for blur image! As We can see for Conversion Attrition ,Converted ,Remaining - some values are there! But it's dividing ,I need the values in the same column.
I have done this but the division is coming ! I need help here ! Thanks in advance.
If you want to reduce the number of column headers, remove some discrete (blue) fields from the columns shelf. If you want to reduce the number of row headers, remove some discrete (blue) fields from the rows shelf.
Depending on your data shape and values, you might want to put the fields you take off those shelfs onto another shelf, such as the text shelf.
The easiest approach is treat understanding Tableau as a series of experiments and learn from them -- i.e. if I do this, what does Tableau do in response? In this case, the discrete fields on the rows and columns axis define the row and column headers for your viz, dividing the view into panes and cells.
You have to also keep aware of which fields you are treating as dimensions in your view. That will determine the level of detail of the viz and the number of marks.

From the Image I need to calculate % complete for the order number 1.
Calculation for complete will be
(total number of points for status 'Delivered' / total number of points)*100
The value should be 57%
Can some one help with the calculated field?
Look at IIF in help files
SUM(IIF([Status]="Delivered",[Point],NULL)) / SUM([Point])
I assume your column named Order No. extends all the way down each row (i.e., each row should have a 1 as Order No. but the screenshot does not show that.
Also, the above only works if the status of "Delivered" is consistently cased, which it is not in the screenshot. If it is not consistently cased, wrap [Status] in an Upper function:
SUM(IIF(UPPER([Status])="DELIVERED",[Point],NULL)) / SUM([Point])
You can also get the effect you want, just by manipulating the Tableau user interface -- without needed to write calculated fields as #S. User18 showed. Both approaches work, but it helps to understand both alternatives.
As with #S. User18, I assume your column named Order No. is consistently filled in. I also assume [Order No.] is a dimension.
Place [Order No.] on a shelf, say Rows
Place [Status] on another shelf, say Columns
Place Sum([Point]) on a shelf, say Text
This shows the sum of the number of Points for each combination of the two dimensions: [Order No.] and [Status]
To convert the number of Points to a percentage, right click on Sum([Point]) on the marks card, and choose Quick Table calculation->Percent of Total
Similarly, right click on Sum([Point]) and experiment with different "Compute Using" settings to get the effect you want -- i.e. percent of each row, column, table etc. You can instead Edit the Table Calc if the preset Compute Using options don't get the effect you want.
Right click on any row or column headers that you want to hide - so if you only want to display the percentages for the Completed Status, hide the others. Don't exclude the others as that will change the calculations.

I am Creating a Cross-tab with Tableau Desktop 10.0.
I need to show each column in the cross-tab in different background color. How to do this tableau. I have read about a method using calculated columns, but i am looking for other options. Also is it possible differentiate each columns with a line?
Thanks for help
I'm not sure what you mean by calculated columns but the only way I know is to use a dummy Measure in the columns shelf and then place the actual measure you want on the Text pill. Set the marks to Bar and increase the size to full. Each Measure will have its own dummy Measure in the column shelf. Take a look at this example. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/60455118/160919%20stack%20question.twbx
As for differentiating each column with a line, you can do this by going Format > Borders > Column and adjust the Column Divider.
I am trying to get all my lines to overlap on a single graph. How would I go about doing this? Here is what I managed to get so far:
And when I say overlap, I mean something similar to this:
Here is more information about my data:
Each of the attributes (e.g. 'Intro', 'Flair') have the following integers in the data: 1,2,3,4 with an associated pcttip (tip percentage) as a decimal number.
I have manually right clicked on each of the measures in the columns area and changed them to "dimension".
The dataset can be found here if you would like to try: https://www.dropbox.com/s/je72hbso2tzby60/Tableau_data_2.xlsx?dl=0
You can do this in Tableau fairly easily. You need to pivot some of your data.
Click on the data source in the top-left and select Edit Data Source
In the bottom pane, where your data is previewed, select/highlight each of the fields that you want measured (Intro, Flair, etc.)
Right-Click with those fields selected and click Pivot
When you return to your sheet, you will see a new dimension field and measure field for your pivot.
Add [Pivot field values] to the Columns section - make sure this is set to 'Dimension' and 'Continuous'
Add [Pivot field names] to the Color card
Pivot
Output
Drag 'Repeat' pill to the X-axis on 'Intro' then drag the other pills into 'Intro'
