error starting mongodb with brew start on macOS Catalina 10.15.6 - mongodb

I have tried a few troubleshoots to no avail. They don't seem to match my specific error. I start mongodb with
> brew services start mongodb-community
The terminal says it is succesfully started, but when i
> brew services
to check mongodb's status it says error. No explanation.
But if I open up a new terminal and run mongo, I do however get a more detailed error.
> connecting to: mongodb://127.0.0.1:27017/?
> compressors=disabled&gssapiServiceName=mongodb
> Error: couldn't connect to server 127.0.0.1:27017, connection
> attempt failed: SocketException: Error connecting to
> 127.0.0.1:27017 :: caused by :: Connection refused :

I have found a solution to this problem. The socket exception error is apparently being thrown because the root owns the
/tmp/mongodb-27017.sock
solution
sudo rm -rf /tmp/mongodb-27017.sock
re start mongodb with
brew services start mongodb-community#4.4
it will create a new
/tmp/mongodb-27017.sock
which is owned by user. You can check by
ls -lsah /tmp/mongodb-27017.sock
my output was then
0 srwx------ 1 userName wheel 0B Apr 8 12:05 /tmp/mongodb-27017.sock
where username was previously root.
my solution was found here

MongoDB starting with status error on macOS

I'm using homebrew to initialize mongodb as it follows:
brew services start mongodb-community#5.0
It starts successfully
==> Successfully started mongodb-community (label: homebrew.mxcl.mongodb-community)
However, when I type mongoto run mongodb, I keep getting connection refused:
MongoDB shell version v5.0.2
connecting to: mongodb://127.0.0.1:27017/?compressors=disabled&gssapiServiceName=mongodb
Error: couldn't connect to server 127.0.0.1:27017, connection attempt failed: SocketException: Error connecting to 127.0.0.1:27017 :: caused by :: Connection refused :
connect#src/mongo/shell/mongo.js:372:17
#(connect):2:6
exception: connect failed
exiting with code 1
So I typed brew services list to check if the mongoDB is up, and it seems it started with an error status:
Name
Status
User
Plist
mongodb-community
error
guilhermemendes
/opt/homebrew/opt/mongodb-community/...
check the following.
if you are using M1 based MacOS then install mongo db (and brew) with Rosetta.
check the IP binding on mongo config
(/usr/local/etc/mongod.conf or /opt/homebrew/etc/mongod.conf)
verify the connection string URI format - Mongo docs - connection-string-uri-format

MongoDB - couldn't connect to server 127.0.0.1:27017, caused by :Connection refused : connect#src/mongo/shell/mongo.js:374:17

I installed mongodb with homebrew and i use Mac OS Big Sur
when I start mongo db with
$ brew services start mongodb-community
It says that mongodb it successfully started but when i run
$ brew services list
The status of mongodb-community is "error" and if I try to type the command "mongo" in the cmd it gave me the problem explained in the title of this question:
MongoDB shell version v4.4.3
connecting to: mongodb://127.0.0.1:27017/?compressors=disabled&gssapiServiceName=mongodb
Error: couldn't connect to server 127.0.0.1:27017, connection attempt failed: SocketException: Error connecting to 127.0.0.1:27017 :: caused by :: Connection refused :
connect#src/mongo/shell/mongo.js:374:17
#(connect):2:6
exception: connect failed
exiting with code 1
I ran the following in command line to fix the problem.
mongod --dbpath /usr/local/var/mongodb
this was directly after a re-install.
The error message that clued me in was:
{"t":{"$date":"2021-04-22T11:33:48.608-04:00"},"s":"E", "c":"STORAGE", "id":20557, "ctx":"initandlisten","msg":"DBException in initAndListen, terminating","attr":{"error":"NonExistentPath: Data directory /data/db not found. Create the missing directory or specify another path using (1) the --dbpath command line option, or (2) by adding the 'storage.dbPath' option in the configuration file."}}
more specifically
"error":"NonExistentPath: Data directory /data/db not found. Create the missing directory or specify another path using (1) the --dbpath command line option, or (2) by adding the 'storage.dbPath' option in the configuration file."
if you want to run mongodb type on terminal:
mongod --dbpath /usr/local/var/mongodb
If it not works use only:
mongod
And if you want to make CRUD in your db via SHELL or TERMINAL, run this :
mongo
-Archlinux
Search for [.mongodb / mongosh /]
Give execute permission to config.

Unable to start mongodb without access control

I am using EC2(for Ubuntu 16.04) and i have installed mongodb 3.6
but when i start it using following command
mongod --port 27017 --dbpath /data/db
It is giving following error

Downgrading MongoDB 3.4 to 3.2, can't connect to shell

I am getting this error instead of my shell prompt (running Ubuntu 16.04LTS).
I'm pretty new to MongoDB. I had to downgrade from version 3.4 to 3.2:
https://docs.mongodb.com/manual/release-notes/3.4-downgrade-standalone/
I followed those instructions (I thought) pretty faithfully, but now can't access the shell to confirm, etc.

There was a socket file that the error seems to be referencing at /tmp/mongodb-27017.sock
Per these, I ended up removing that socket file, then tried to reboot the mongod daemon:
'Failed to unlink socket file" error in MongoDB 3.0
MongoDB - Permission denied for socket: /tmp/mongodb-27017.sock
service mongod restart
service mongod status
scorpian555#scorpo:~$ service mongod status

Per those, I removed the socket file and ran:
scorpian555#scorpo:~$ ls -ld /tmp
drwxrwxrwt 17 root root 20480 Jul 13 14:58 /tmp
I think I'm a little lost here, I was under the impression that, upon restart of the daemon, it would recreate this temporary file, at which point I would check the permissions.
I can't find the link at the moment, but had found elsewhere instructions to make sure the owner of the mongod.sock file was mongod (not root) and I would have to chown it if it wasn't mongod.
I'm pretty new to MongoDB, like I said. I found this as another possible issue, but wanted to see if I should dive down this rabbit hole or whether I might be looking in the wrong place?
Connection refused to MongoDB errno 111
Thanks.
My issue was that, while I started the mongod service, I did not actually run the daemon with sudo as needed.

MongoDB server won't start

I just installed Arch Linux today. I'm setting up my development stack, and I'm stuck with mongodb.
I have followed this wiki when installing:
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/MongoDB#Installing_MongoDB
When I try to get into mongo console, I get this:
jan#arch:~$ mongo
MongoDB shell version: 2.4.5
connecting to: test
Tue Jul 9 19:38:13.365 JavaScript execution failed: Error: couldn't connect to server 127.0.0.1:27017 at src/mongo/shell/mongo.js:L112
exception: connect failed
jan#arch:~$
What am I missing here?
EDIT: I figured out when I run mongod directly from terminal, it starts server fine. However the systemctl start mongodb doesn't start it.
Okay, I've figured it out by scanning journalctl output:
ul 09 19:49:33 arch mongod[1122]: all output going to: /var/log/mongodb/mongod.log Jul 09 19:49:33 arch mongod[1122]: can't open [/var/log/mongodb/mongod.log] for log file: errno:13 Permission denied Jul 09 19:49:33 arch mongod[1122]: Bad logpath value: "/var/log/mongodb/mongod.log"; terminating.
So I searched for user that might be utilized by mongodb:
jan#arch:~$ cat /etc/passwd
root:x:0:0:root:/root:/bin/bash
...
mongodb:x:998:2::/var/lib/mongodb:/bin/bash
And chowned required folders:
jan#arch:~$ sudo chown -R mongodb:x /var/log/mongodb/
jan#arch:~$ sudo chown -R mongodb:x /var/lib/mongodb/
Started it again:
jan#arch:~$ sudo systemctl start mongodb
It works now.
jan#arch:~$ mongo
MongoDB shell version: 2.4.5
connecting to: test
