Google Kubernetes Api Cron Job - kubernetes

I have a cluster in Google Kubernetes Engine, in that cluster there is a workload which runs every 4 hours, its a cron job that was set up by someone. I want to make that run whenever I need it. I am trying to achieve this by using the google Kubernetes API, sending requests from my app whenever a button is clicked to run that cron job, unfortunately the API has no apparent way to do that, or does not have a way at all. What would be some good advice to achieve my goal?

CronJob resource in kubernetes is not meant to be used one-off tasks, that are run on demand. It is rather configured to run on a regular schedule.
Manuel Polacek has already mentioned that in his comment:
For this scenario you don't need a cron job. A simple bare pod or a
job would be enough, i would say. You can apply a resource on button
push, for example with kubectl – Manuel Polacek Apr 24 at 19:25
So rather than trying to find a way to run your CronJobs on demand, regardless of how they are originally scheduled (usually to be repeated at regular intervals), you should copy the code of such CronJob and find a different way of running it. A Job fits ideally to such use case as it is designed to run one-off tasks.

How to create a cron job in a Kubernetes deployed app without duplicates?

I am trying to find a solution to run a cron job in a Kubernetes-deployed app without unwanted duplicates. Let me describe my scenario, to give you a little bit of context.
I want to schedule jobs that execute once at a specified date. More precisely: creating such a job can happen anytime and its execution date will be known only at that time. The job that needs to be done is always the same, but it needs parametrization.
My application is running inside a Kubernetes cluster, and I cannot assume that there always will be only one instance of it running at the any moment in time. Therefore, creating the said job will lead to multiple executions of it due to the fact that all of my application instances will spawn it. However, I want to guarantee that a job runs exactly once in the whole cluster.
I tried to find solutions for this problem and came up with the following ideas.
Create a local file and check if it is already there when starting a new job. If it is there, cancel the job.
Not possible in my case, since the duplicate jobs might run on other machines!
Utilize the Kubernetes CronJob API.
I cannot use this feature because I have to create cron jobs dynamically from inside my application. I cannot change the cluster configuration from a pod running inside that cluster. Maybe there is a way, but it seems to me there have to be a better solution than giving the application access to the cluster it is running in.
Would you please be as kind as to give me any directions at which I might find a solution?
I am using a managed Kubernetes Cluster on Digital Ocean (Client Version: v1.22.4, Server Version: v1.21.5).
After thinking about a solution for a rather long time I found it.
The solution is to take the scheduling of the jobs to a central place. It is as easy as building a job web service that exposes endpoints to create jobs. An instance of a backend creating a job at this service will also provide a callback endpoint in the request which the job web service will call at the execution date and time.
The endpoint in my case links back to the calling backend server which carries the logic to be executed. It would be rather tedious to make the job service execute the logic directly since there are a lot of dependencies involved in the job. I keep a separate database in my job service just to store information about whom to call and how. Addressing the startup after crash problem becomes trivial since there is only one instance of the job web service and it can just re-create the jobs normally after retrieving them from the database in case the service crashed.
Do not forget to take care of failing jobs. If your backends are not reachable for some reason to take the callback, there must be some reconciliation mechanism in place that will prevent this failure from staying unnoticed.
A little note I want to add: In case you also want to scale the job service horizontally you run into very similar problems again. However, if you think about what is the actual work to be done in that service, you realize that it is very lightweight. I am not sure if horizontal scaling is ever a requirement, since it is only doing requests at specified times and is not executing heavy work.

How to start pods on demand in Kubernetes?

I need to create pods on demand in order to run a program. it will run according to the needs, so it could be that for 5 hours there will be nothing running, and then 10 requests will be needed to process, and I might need to limit that only 5 will run simultaneously because of resources limitations.
I am not sure how to build such a thing in kubernetes.
Also worth noting is that I would like to create a new docker container for each run and exit the container when it ends.
There are many options and you’ll need to try them out. The core tool is HorizontalPodAutoscaler. Systems like KEDA build on top of that to manage metrics more easily. There’s also Serverless tools like knative or kubeless. Or workflow tools like Tekton, Dagster, or Argo.
It really depends on your specifics.

GKE automated pod recycling ideas

I'm thinking of a solution to do a rolling update on a schedule without really releasing something. I was thinking of an ENV variable change through kubectl patch to kick off the update in GKE.
The context is we have containers that don't do garbage collection, and the temporary fix and easiest path forward and is cycling out pods frequently that we can schedule on a nightly.
Our naive approach would be to schedule this through our build pipeline, but seems like there's a lot of moving parts.
I haven't looked at Cloud Functions, but I'm sure there's an API that could do this and I'm leaning towards automating this with Cloud Functions.
Or is there already a GKE solution to do this?
Any other approaches to this problem?
I know AWS's ec2 has this feature for ASG, I was looking for the same thing so I don't to do a hacky ENV var change on manifest.
I can think of two possibilities:
Cronjobs. You can use CronJobs to run tasks at a specific time or interval. Suggested for automatic tasks, such as backups, reporting, sending emails, or cleanup tasks. More details here.
CI/CD with CloudBuild. When you push a change to your repository, Cloud Build automatically builds and deploys the container to your GKE cluster.

How to create a kubernetes job from a pod

I'm working on a cluster in which I'm performing a lot scraping on Instagram to find valuable accounts and then message them to ask if they're interested in selling their account. This is what my application consists of:
Finding Instagram accounts by scraping for them with a lot of different accounts
Refine the accounts retrieved and sort out the bad ones
Message the chosen accounts
In addition to this, I'm thinking of uploading every data of each step to a database (the whole chunk of accounts gathered in step 1, the refined accounts gathered in step 2, and the messaged users from step 3) in separate collections. I'm also thinking of developing a slack bot that handles errors by messaging me a report of the error and eventually so it can message me whenever a user responds.
As you can see, there are a lot of different parts of this application and that is the reason why I figured that using Kubernetes for this would be a good idea.
My initial approach to this was by making every pod in my node a rest API. Then I could send a request to each pod, each time I wanted them to run. But if figured that this would not be an optimal solution and not in any way a Kubernetes-way approach.
The only way to achieve it in way you describe it is to communicate with Kubernetes API server from inside of your pod. This requires several thing (adding service account and role binding, using kubernetes client etc) and I would not recommended it as regular application flow (unless you are a devops trying to provide some generic/utility solution).
From another angle - sharing a volumes between pods and jobs should be avoided if possible (it adds complexity and restrictions)

If I can suggest some solutions:
you can share S3 volume and have Cronjob scheduled to
run every some time. If cronjob finds data - it process it. Therefore you do
not need to trigger job from inside a pod.
Two services, sending data via http (if feasible) - second service don't do
anything when it is not requested from it.
If you share your usecase with some details probably better answers could be provided.

There is out of the box support in kubectl to run a job from a cronjob (kubectl create job test-job --from=cronjob/a-cronjob), but there is no official support for running a job straight from a pod. You will need to get the pod resource from the cluster and then create a job by using the pod specification as part of the job specification.

How to run multiple Kubernetes jobs in sequence?

I would like to run a sequence of Kubernetes jobs one after another. It's okay if they are run on different nodes, but it's important that each one run to completion before the next one starts. Is there anything built into Kubernetes to facilitate this? Other architecture recommendations also welcome!
This requirement to add control flow, even if it's a simple sequential flow, is outside the scope of Kubernetes native entities as far as I know.
There are many workflow engine implementations for Kubernetes, most of them are focusing on solving CI/CD but are generic enough for you to use however you want.

I would try to use cronjobs and set the concurrency policy to forbid so it doesn't run concurrent jobs.
I have worked on IBM TWS (Workload Automation) which is a scheduler similar to cronjob where you can mention the dependencies of the jobs.
You can specify a job to run only after it's dependencies has run using follows keyword.
