How to fix Eclipse Error: The eclipse executable launcher was unable to locate its companion shared library? Windows 10 - eclipse

How do I fix the error "The eclipse executable launcher was unable to locate its companion shared library" on Windows 10. I wasn't able to find it elsewhere and I would appreciate it if someone can explain it to me in layman's terms. TIA

This type of error message, ofter, occurs when Eclipse bundle that you downloaded was not correctly unzipped.
Try to simply delete the Eclipse folder and then extract it again with a well known unzip tool (have a look at the extension of the file, if it's tar, rar or zip and use a extract tool that supports it).
Finally you can try running eclipse.exe

the Eclipse executable launcher was unable to locate its companion shared library error message

I decided to turn over a new leaf and start learning Java, but after downloading eclipse I cannot seem to make it run. I originally got an error saying it couldn't find my VM so I changed the path in the eclipse.ini to where "Java Mission Control" is installed, and now it's giving me this error when I try to run the application. I have looked at many other posts where people get the same error message but they all have to do with wrongly unzipped files and I am quite sure I unzipped it properly. I have also tried different mirrors and redownloaded eclipse 5 or 6 times as well as reinstalled JDK with no avail. I have used WinZip, Windows file explorer, and Jzip all to unzip the file with the same message.
Windows 7 64bit
8gb ram,i7, 660ti graphics
If you copy and paste all of the contents into a folder on your desktop, you can then use the eclipse.exe file just fine.
I had the same problem with Eclipse. I even had a very similar problem when trying to install the Android Studio (I wanted to compare Eclipse and Android Studio). The difference with Android Studio was the error message (forgot exactly, but was saying that I was missing a .dll file that was important).
The simple thing that solved the problem:
I moved the original .zip file out of the folder where the unzipped files were created (I moved to the desktop). You can even delete it definitely because once unzipped we don't need it anymore. Then, the Eclipse.exe run smoothly (even before running it I noticed its icon changed after I eliminated the .zip). Then I went and did the same for Android Studio, run the corresponding .exe file, and tara-raaaan: run too!!!
Easy... but not obvious at all, I know. Hope this helps!
PD: Before this problem I had another one. It was related with Java (JDK); I had to add the path where it was installed and that solved the problem.

Running Eclipse on desktop = can't find companion library

I just downloaded Eclipse Juno onto my machine. I extracted the files to an Eclipse subdirectory in "C:\Program Files". When I try to launch eclipse from here, it works great! But I don't want to have to navigate to this directory every time I want to launch eclipse. I tried just moving the executable to my Desktop, but then when I try to run it I get this message:
The eclipse executable launcher was unable to locate its companion library.
How do I let eclipse know where it's companion library is if I don't plan to have them in the same folder? Please be very specific.
Thanks!
You dont move the executable to your desktop because the executable needs to be in the same directory with other files where it was. get it back and then make a shortcut or link to it. you are free to make the shortcut or link where you want.
Well i had the same problem sometime back, and i figured out that since i've changed the location of my elcipse.exe , it has some how effected the "eclipse.ini " file
1.Path to -startup
D:\ < elcipse folder> elcipse:\ plugins\org.eclipse.equinox.launcher_1.3.0.v20120522-1813.jar \this is the start up jar file.
2.Path to shared lucher library
D:\ < elcipse folder> elcipse:\ org.eclipse.equinox.launcher.win32.win32.x86_1.1.200.v20120522-1813 \this is the shared launcher library jar file.
just set the follwing two paths and ti will start up again like befor..
Happy coding..
This is a bug filed with Eclipse for Windows and Mac:
When attempting to launch Eclipse (double click on Eclipse.app), the launch fails. The only action is a dialog box with this message:' the eclipse executable launcher was unable to locate its companion shared library'. I found an online description of the problem and the workaround here:
Specifically, as per the instructions above:
I opened the Eclipse.app package, located eclipse.ini, edited it
searched the plugins folder for something matching org.eclipse.equinox.launcher.carbon.
copied the maching folder name (from plugins)
pasted it as the terminating portion of the path for --launcher.library
replaced the --launcher.library line with that path

Eclipse Neon, 2017:
I copied my old .p2 folder found in my home.
Ran eclipse again and it worked.
It used to be that you could just copy eclipse as a zip and it would work fine, but it seems some plugins now rely on the .p2 folder.

"Unable to locate JAR/zip" error for JDBC connections [BIRT Eclipse, Windows 7, Oracle 11g]

As an FYI, I'm new to this entire stack, so I might be making a basic error.
I'm attempting to explore BIRT reporting for a Maximo system that was recently upgraded.
To do so, I installed the following:
Java 6 & Java 7 JDKs
BIRT version of Eclipse (Eclipse + BIRT plugins built in).
Some Oracle 11gR2 client options (a custom install)
SQL*Plus
JDBC/ODBC drivers
Thin Client
I take the following steps:
Open Eclipse
Create a new Reporting Project
Add a Data Source
Select "JDBC Data Source" (also tried "JDBC Database Connection for Query Builder")
Select the "Oracle" connection profile type and click next.
At this point, I see that the drivers list is empty. This strikes me as odd, but I figure maybe I have to define the driver definition. So I take the following steps:
Click "Define driver definition"
In the Name/Type tab, select "Oracle Thin Driver", system version 11
At this point, I see an error message: Unable to locate JAR/zip in file system as specified by the driver definition: ojdbc14.jar. It seems that ojdbc14.jar doesn't even exist on my system that I can find.
I have tried adding other jdbc jar files that I can find in the oracle client directory (i.e. from Oracle_Base\product\11.2.0\client_1\jdbc\lib) but nothing seems to resolve the issue.
Help?
I had similar issue.
Clicking "Clear all" and then adding the jar manually solved the problem.
The answer in this case was unfortunately stupidly simple -- after closing and reopening Eclipse, I had no trouble removing the driver, adding another, and getting to work. I was up and running in no time.
Thanks for all your help!
Ensure the ojdbc14.jar file exsists and is in your library path. When on the dialog for picking the driver ojdbc14.jar, simply click the find jar/zip button and find the file.
Sometimes it is there, but still does not work. To solve this problem, press the "clear all" button. Now repeat the above process. The .jar will be added and you will continue to driver connection and details dialog box.
This happens because the Eclipse IDE could not find the driver in the eclipse installation path. This is what you will do:
Search for the .jar file in your system and copy it to the eclipse installation path.
If you could not get it visit http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/connector/j and locate the required connector. Download it and save it to the eclipse installation path. So now Eclipse can see it and the error would no longer appear.
Very simple answer is Into the Jar Console Click on edit jar and Again select jar in your file system. that will locate file in your file system simple

Plugins won't install on Eclipse

I am trying to install subversive and checkstyle onto Eclipse IDE for Java Developers however the following message appears:
"Cannot complete the install because one or more required items could not be found.
Software currently installed: Shared profile 1.0.0.1316138460759 (SharedProfile_epp.package.java 1.0.0.1316138460759)
Missing requirement: Shared profile 1.0.0.1316138460759 (SharedProfile_epp.package.java 1.0.0.1316138460759) requires 'org.maven.ide.eclipse [1.0.100.20110804-1717]' but it could not be found"
What does it mean? Is there another way to install them as I need both plugins for my course.
Please help and thank you :)
Try running Eclipse as administrator, I just had the same issue and this worked for me.
There's an alternative to running Eclipse as an administrator: you can manually give write permissions to your "eclipse" folder for all users (or just your current user).
This way Windows/UAC won't pop up the security question that you see when you run programs as admin.
Hi I had the same problem just yesterday.
I was uploading SDK for android and found your question in a google search.
I reverted back to an older version of eclipse. Link to older version of eclipse
This solved it for me.
Remember to delete eclips from your program files. You do this by just physically deleting the file from program files (not through uninstall). Then also make sure you delete your workbench. This is a file called workbench in your docs. Well mine was in my docs, it could be somewhere else on your system.
I am using windows 7.
Best of luck.
I had this problem, but I had to dig harder to fix it.
The source of my problem was the shortcut to launch Eclipse had this in the Target field:
"C:\Program Files\eclipse\eclipse.exe" -configuration C:\Program
Files\eclipse\configuration
The problem with this is that without double quotes around the "-configuration C:\Program Files\eclipse\configuration" section it would hit that space in 'Program Files' and use C:\Program for storing configuration some of the time. Generally, if you have C:\Program you should make sure programs didn't put random files in there by mistake.
To fix this I had to move the configuration files from C:\Program to C:\Program Files\eclipse\configuration, picking and choosing along the way. Change the Target field to:
"C:\Program Files\eclipse\eclipse.exe" "-configuration C:\Program
Files\eclipse\configuration"
and I was good to go.
I had the same problem, and I solved it by setting
"Contact all update sites during install to find required software"
to true.
(I used the Eclipse install manager, in
Eclipse IDE for Java Developers,
Version: Indigo Service Release 1
)
In my case, updating to the latest version of Eclipse (Juno) did the trick. Perhaps your add-on won't run on your version?
I think you need the maven plugin in order to install your plugin. If that's the case, you can follow this this instruction to install it.
Use eclipse update manager to install the plugins.. Then it will automatically select dependent plugins..You dont need to bother about dependent plugins in that case
All I had to do was completely open up full permissions for all users to the directory. This is dangerous if you have a multi-user system but Windows 7 seems to default to giving processes not very high permission levels; some processes (such as Eclipse Updated) don't know how to deal with this and request user permission, so they just bomb out. Easy fix: full control to all users and processes for the Eclipse Directory.

Eclipse doesn't recognize lua files after installing the lua plugin

I downloaded Eclipse Classic off of the Eclipse website then the Lua Eclipse IDE plugin. I followed the install instructions but Eclipse doesn't seem to recognize or be able to understand lua files. Can someone help?
Sounds like your file types aren't associated. Click on Window/Preferences and select General/Editors/File Associations.
Add more information
Which installation guide did you follow? (Lua Eclipse Installation?)
Which OS (version)?
Which java version? (Which implementation)
Which eclipse version?
I love these kind of questions because they provide an opportunity to do a test I postponed until now...
So I downloaded the plugin package, and followed the instructions: closed Eclipse, put two jar files in the plugin folder, put the open-ldb.exe elsewhere, restarted Eclipse.
I created a generic project, added a generic file linked to an existing Lua file. When I opened the file, it was automatically identified as such, with a moon icon and correct syntax highlighting.
Using Eclipse 3.5.1 on Windows XP, BTW.
Now, I have an issue, the debugger won't start for me, I get a
Unable to connect to PDA VM
Connection refused: connect
error, not sure why (path to exe file is correct, I have another error when it is wrong).
But at least I have the Lua files recognized without problem.
I think you might want to check that in Preferences > General > Editors > File Associations, *.lua is defined and associated to the Lua editor.
Instead of opening a File you have to do the following:
Open a new LUA project.
Then import using 'File System' all files (resources and LUA files) into the project.
Now you can see and edit the LUA files. Don't know why it doesn't work by simply opening a LUA file directly.
