I am trying to pass an array from an AzurePowerShell task to an ARM template but I am not sure how to do this.
I get the error:
Not valid json when I attempt to pass it as a string and then use json function in ARM although when I print the json out and lint it, it is valid json.
Can't convert string to object when the template expects an object.
Any help is appreciated.
I have a powershell script that grabs the access policies from my key vault:
$keyVault = Get-AzKeyVault -Name $keyVaultName -ResourceGroupName $resourceGroupName
$keyVaultAccessPolicies = $keyVault.AccessPolicies
$json = $keyVaultAccessPolicies | ConvertTo-Json -Compress
Write-Host "##vso[task.setvariable variable=SAUCE;isOutput=true;]$json"
EDIT
I can see the value when debugging to be an array as its surrounded by square brackets. However, when outputted in pipelines the square bracket is omitted out. I find this strange and don't understand why its doing that.
However, how do I now pass this to a template?
- task: AzureResourceManagerTemplateDeployment#3
displayName: 'Provision Key Vault'
inputs:
deploymentScope: 'Resource Group'
azureResourceManagerConnection: ${{ parameters.azureSubscriptionName }}
subscriptionId: ${{ parameters.azureSubscriptionId }}
action: 'Create Or Update Resource Group'
resourceGroupName: '$(Resource.Group.Name)'
location: '$(Region)'
templateLocation: 'Linked artifact'
csmFile: '$(Provisioning.Package.Name)/Templates/key-vault-deploy.json'
deploymentMode: 'Incremental'
overrideParameters: >-
-name "$(KeyVault.Name)"
-foo "$env:accesspolicyreference_SAUCE"
The is the key vault template

There are several issues here:
Overriding an arm template parameter with a json string can get you into trouble, if it is not escaped correctly. I suggest, you encode the json as a base64 string:
$keyVault = Get-AzKeyVault -Name 'vaultbyenar2htogee'
$keyVaultAccessPolicies = $keyVault.AccessPolicies
$json = $keyVaultAccessPolicies | ConvertTo-Json -Compress
$sauce64 = [Convert]::ToBase64String([System.Text.Encoding]::UTF8.GetBytes($json))
Write-Host "##vso[task.setvariable variable=SAUCE]$sauce64"
There is an arm template function base64ToJson() that directly decodes base64 encoded json strings into objects:
"variables": {
"fooBar": "[base64ToJson(parameters('fooBar'))]"
}
The object that you get from $keyVault.AccessPolicies is not a valid value for the accessPolicies property in the arm template. In order to make it work, you need to map the values into the correct structure with a copy-loop:
{
"$schema": "http://schema.management.azure.com/schemas/2015-01-01/deploymentTemplate.json#",
"contentVersion": "1.0.0.0",
"parameters": {
"name": {

No need to use ;isOutput=true if you will use the pipeline variable in a downstream task within the same job. (Otherwise you need to prefix the variable with the name of the task in which it was set, like: $(myTask.SAUCE)).

I am trying to format my workflow per these instructions (https://argoproj.github.io/argo-workflows/workflow-inputs/#using-previous-step-outputs-as-inputs) but cannot seem to get it right. Specifically, I am trying to imitate "Using Previous Step Outputs As Inputs"
I have included my workflow below. In this version, I have added a path to the inputs.artifacts because the error requests one. The error I am now receiving is:
ATA[2022-02-28T14:14:45.933Z] Failed to submit workflow: templates.entrypoint.tasks.print1 templates.print1.inputs.artifacts.result.from not valid in inputs
Can someone please tell me how to correct this workflow so that it works?

In the artifact argument of print1, you should only put name and from parameters
E.g:
- name: print1
arguments:
artifacts: [{name: results, from: "{{tasks.whalesay.outputs.artifacts.msg}}"}]
and then in your template declaration, you should put name and path in your artifact input, as follows:
- name: input1
inputs:
artifacts:
- name: result
path: /tmp/raw
...
This works because in the argument of you task (in the dag declaration) you tell the program how you want that input to be called and from where to extract it, and in the template declaration you receive the input from name and tell the program where to place it temporarily. (This is what I understand in my own words)
Another problem I see is in print1 instead of printing to stdout or using sys to run the cat command, you run cat directly, this (I think) is not posible.
You should instead do something like
import sys
sys.stdout.write("{{inputs.artifacts.result}}\n")
or
import os
os.system("cat {{inputs.artifacts.result}}\n")
A very similar workflow from the Argo developers/maintainers can be found here:

Hey I am doing a CI/CD deployment for a logic app, I have a table storage where I store some data, I have two table storage for test and prod environment. I created a parameter called *table_storage_name" in ARM template :
"parameters": {
// ....
"connections_azuretables_1_externalid": {
"defaultValue": "/subscriptions/e5..../resourceGroups/myrg.../providers/Microsoft.Web/connections/azuretables-1",
"type": "String"
},
"table_storage_name": {
"defaultValue": "testdevops",
"type": "String"
}
}
The error comes from when I reference the parameter here in template.json file:
// ...
"Insert_Entity": {
"runAfter": {
"Initialize_variable": [
"Succeeded"
]
},
"type": "ApiConnection",
"inputs": {
"body": {
"PartitionKey": "#body('Parse_JSON')?['name']",
"RowKey": "#body('Parse_JSON')?['last']"
},
"host": {
"connection": {
"name": "#parameters('$connections')['azuretables_1']['connectionId']"
}
},
"method": "post",
// problem occur after this line
"path": "/Tables/#{encodeURIComponent('[parameters('table_storage_name')]')}/entities"
}
}
but get this error:
InvalidTemplate: The template validation failed: 'The template action 'Insert_Entity' at line '1' and column '582' is not valid: "Unable to parse template language expression 'encodeURIComponent([parameters('table_storage_name')])': expected token 'Identifier' and actual 'LeftSquareBracket'.".'.
I tried escaping the quote with a backslash like: encodeURIComponent(\'[parameters('table_storage_name')]\') or encodeURIComponent('[parameters(''table_storage_name'')]') but all of them raise an error. How can I reference a paramter inside encodeURIComponent in an ARM template ?
As discussed in the comments. credits: #marone
"path": "/Tables/#{encodeURIComponent(parameters('table_storage_name'))}/entities"
Found the solution from this link https://platform.deloitte.com.au/articles/preparing-azure-logic-apps-for-cicd
but here are the steps to reference a parameter logic app:
create an ARM parameter table_storage_name_armparam in template.json, in order to use it's value to reference the value of the ARM parameter (yes it's confusing but follow along you'll understand):
{
"$schema": "https://schema.management.azure.com/schemas/2015-01-01/deploymentTemplate.json#",
"contentVersion": "1.0.0.0",
"parameters": {
"table_storage_name_armparam": {
"type": "String"
}
},
"variables": {},
"resources": [
{
......
}
Now in the logic app parameter value (in the bottom of json file) create the logic app parameter table_storage_name and the value of this parameter will be the ARM parameter created in step 1:
.......
"parameters": {
"$connections": {
"value": {
"azuretables": {
"connectionId": "[parameters('connections_azuretables_externalid')]",
"connectionName": "azuretables",
"id": "/subscriptions/xxxxx-xxxx-xxxx-xxxxxxxx/providers/Microsoft.Web/locations/francecentral/managedApis/azuretables"
}
}
},
"table_storage_name": {
"value": "[parameters('table_storage_name_armparam')]"
}
}
}
}
]
}
finally, reference the logic app parameter value as follow:
"path": "/Tables/#{encodeURIComponent(parameters('table_storage_name'))}/entities"
I would like to enable the .NET Core collection level with applicationInsight in Azure AppService as shown in below picture. From Azure Portal it works well. Keep in mind that by default value is set to disabled:
Now I would like to automate this using either ARM template or powershell.
I did a export template to see how it looks on ARM but there is no settings related to .NET Core collection
I check documentation on MS website but nothing about ARM template with enabling collection too
In PowerShell same problem
Is there anyone in the community who know how to enable the collection using ARM or PowerShell ?
Thanks a lot !
It's simply setting an app setting called XDT_MicrosoftApplicationInsights_Mode with value recommended (to enable) or default (to disable) as described here. You can do that both in ARM or PowerShell as below.
ARM (check appSettings part):

According to the error message, it seems you need to set the options of MessageBox.Show to either ServiceNotification or DefaultDesktopOnly. You can try the workaround provided in this ticket: adding MessageBoxOptions.ServiceNotification
MessageBox.Show(msg, "Print Error", System.Windows.Forms.MessageBoxButtons.YesNo,
System.Windows.Forms.MessageBoxIcon.Error,
System.Windows.Forms.MessageBoxDefaultButton.Button1,
System.Windows.Forms.MessageBoxOptions.ServiceNotification);
But, MessageBox is for use within windows (as opposed to web) applications. It would attempt to open a message box on the server. Here is a ticket you can refer to.
Found out that no authentication was required for azure devops pipeline hence no login or connect is required. This got rid of the popup (modal error).
Next I checked with the azure devops person and he said to not use powershell in the pipeline.
He recommended "Azure Resource Group Deployment" option for the pipeline release. This does not require any initiation script but just a json template and a json parameter.
Thank You.
I need to get DateTime during the deployment in a YAML file. The DateTime should be shown as
"startTime": "2017-12-08T00:00:00"
I found this help. but I need to follow the exact Datetime format. I wonder if anyone can help in this case?

I work on deploying Data Factory by YAML file. This StartTime will be DateTime for the trigger part of Data Factory pipeline
I have update my build pipeline with a variable, build.yml
variables:
deployDate: $(Get-Date -Format "YYYYMMDDThhmmssZ")
and inside my deploy.yml file
- task: AzureResourceGroupDeployment#2
displayName: "Deploy Azure Data Factory Content"
inputs:
azureSubscription: ...
action: ...
resourceGroupName: ..
location: ...
templateLocation: ...
csmFile: ...
csmParametersFile: ...
overrideParameters: >-
- ...
-triggerStartTime "$(deployDate)"
deploymentMode: 'Incremental'
and in adf.content.json, I added
"parameters": {
"triggerStartTime": {
"type": "string"
}
}
"name": "[concat(parameters('factoryName'), '/Trigger')]",
"type": "Microsoft.DataFactory/factories/triggers",
"apiVersion": "...",
"properties": {
"annotations": [],
"runtimeState": "Started",
"pipeline": {
"pipelineReference": {
"referenceName": "...",
"type": "PipelineReference"
},
"parameters": {}
},
"type": "TumblingWindowTrigger",
"typeProperties": {
"frequency": "Hour",
"interval": 1,
"startTime": "[parameters('triggerStartTime')]",
"delay": "00:00:00",
"maxConcurrency": 50,
"retryPolicy": {
"intervalInSeconds": 30
},
"dependsOn": []
}
},
"dependsOn": [
"[concat(variables('factoryId'), '/pipelines/...')]"
]
There is an environment variable in the release stage named RELEASE_DEPLOYMENT_STARTTIME and we can use it in powershell via $(Release.Deployment.StartTime)
In addition, we can custom the variable.
Note: I use the date format as yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss here, You can use other date formats
Define variables
$date=$(Get-Date -Format "yyyy-MM-dd HH:mm:ss");
Write-Host ("##vso[task.setvariable variable=StartTime]$date")
Output the variable
Write-Host "The value of StartTime is : $($env:StartTime)"
Result:

I managed to solve my problem. First of all, I removed all the changes I did in YAML files.
and then I updated the only adf.content.json
"parameters": {
"baseTime": {
"type": "string",
"defaultValue": "[utcNow('u')]",
"metadata": {
"description": "Schedule will start one hour from this time."
}
}
}
and update the variable, I want to run 15min after the deploy
"variables": {
"startTime": "[dateTimeAdd(parameters('baseTime'), 'PT15M')]"
}
