What is the TABLE keyword for in this CTE expression - postgresql

in this I post came across this weird postgres query:
WITH max_i AS
( SELECT MAX(i) FROM test )
SELECT *
FROM test
WHERE i = (TABLE max_i) - 1 ;
It was able to use the CTE return value like a simple variable through the use of the TABLE keyword. I looked through the documentation of postgres, but I couldn't find any mention of what it is or what it is used for. Can someone explain to me how it works?

There is no such feature in PostgreSQL. You can do it only in pl/PgSQL (or other pl/*), but not in plain SQL.
An exception is WITH () query which can work as a variable, or even tuple of variables. It allows you to return a table of temporary values.

Dynamic Config Settings
you can "abuse" dynamic config settings for this:
-- choose some prefix that is unlikely to be used by postgres
set session my.vars.id = '1';
select *
from person
where id = current_setting('my.vars.id')::int;
Config settings are always varchar values, so you need to cast them to the correct data type when using them. This works with any SQL client whereas \set only works in psql
The above requires Postgres 9.2 or later.
For previous versions, the variable had to be declared in postgresql.conf prior to being used, so it limited its usability somewhat. Actually not the variable completely, but the config "class" which is essentially the prefix. But once the prefix was defined, any variable could be used without changing postgresql.conf
It depends on your client.
However, if you're using the psql client, then you can use the following:
my_db=> \set myvar 5
my_db=> SELECT :myvar + 1 AS my_var_plus_1;

Normally, you want to avoid cross joins, but since you’re only cross joining a single row, this has the effect of simply widening the table with the variable data.
In many cases, you don’t need to include the vars. prefix if the names don’t clash with the names in the other table. I include it here to make the point clear.
Also, you can go on to add more CTEs.

Working with integer variable, you don't need the triple quote. Triple quote becomes single quote at query time; otherwise you got syntax error. There might be a way to eliminate the need of triple quote when working with string variables. Please update if you find a way to improve.

In psql, you can use these 'variables' as macros. Note that they get "evaluated" every time they are used, rather than at the time that they are "set".
Simple example:

However, you can still use these as a valuable shorthand to avoid repeating lots of subselects.

postgresql queries with expression

I create this table 'friend' with PgAdmin III. I would like to select all the data where the word 'grand' is contained in the columns keywords.
I tried the following:
SELECT * FROM friend where keywords LIKE 'grand';
but it does not work, i don't receive any results.
Would someone have any ideas ?

cakephp condition using '?' in the string [duplicate]

For detecting the existence of a key in a hstore, I need to run a query like this:
SELECT * FROM tbl WHERE hst ? 'foo'
However, that gives me a PDOException:
PDOException: SQLSTATE[HY093]: Invalid parameter number: no parameters were bound: SELECT * FROM tbl WHERE hst ? 'foo'
Is there any way to escape the question mark so PDO won't pick it up as a placeholder? I've tried with up to four backslashes, as well as a double question mark (??), but nothing seems to persuade PDO to leave the question mark alone.
Use the function call form. According to the system catalogs, the hstore ? operator uses the exist function:
regress=# select oprname, oprcode from pg_operator where oprname = '?';
oprname | oprcode
---------+---------
? | exist
(1 row)
so you can write:
SELECT * FROM tbl WHERE exist(hst,'foo');
(Personally I'm not a big fan of hstore's operator-centric design and documentation, I think it discards the useful self-documenting properties of a function based interface without any real benefit and I usually use its function calls rather than its operators. Just because you can define operators doesn't mean you should.)

The workaround on PostgreSQL 9.5 is similar:

As Diabl0 mentioned, the proposed solution work but does not use the index.
Tested with:
CREATE INDEX tempidxgin ON post USING GIN (locations);
I suggest you disable PDO native prepared statement so question marks will be ignored:
$pdo->setAttribute(\PDO::ATTR_EMULATE_PREPARES, true);

Odd performance issue when using an OR #Parameter IS NULL with a function

I'm looking at legacy code because its performing very poorly.
I tracked the issue down to
DECLARE #Parameter AS VARCHAR(50) = '12345'
SELECT *
FROM MyTable
WHERE
(
MyIndexedField IN ( SELECT Value from fn_Function(#Parameter) )
OR #Parameter ISNULL;
)
AND OtherCriteria = 'Something'
The query is wanting to pull all data from a table on a field that has a non clustered index. When I remove the OR #Parameter IS NULL it runs in under a second, but when I add the #Parameter IS NULL it takes 40s+.
If I replace the function with a literal, it runs in under a second.
Example
SELECT *
FROM MyTable
WHERE
(
MyIndexedField IN ( '12345' )
OR #Parameter ISNULL;
)
AND OtherCriteria = 'Something'
Any idea whats going on, and a better way to rewrite this query?

I was able to to get around the problem but the solution was odd, see below.
Don't think this is the best solution, if you have any suggestions, it would be greatly appreciated.
DECLARE #Parameter AS VARCHAR(50) = '12345'
SELECT DISTINCT MyIndexedField
INTO #T
FROM MyTable WHERE #Parameter IS NULL
UNION ALL
SELECT Value FROM fn_Function(#Parameter)
SELECT *
FROM MyTable AS X
JOIN #T AS T ON T.MyIndexedField = X.MyIndexedField
WHERE OtherCriteria = 'Something'
Without seeing the execution plans and knowing what the fn_Function function actually does it is hard to give conclusive advice, but a couple of ideas that would be worth exploring are:
1) if you add OPTION (RECOMPILE) to the end of the statement then the optimizer will be able to 'see' the value of the #Parameter parameter and will therefore be able to optimize out the OR #Parameter IS NULL condition (for this particular input value) at the 'cost' of this statement having to be recompiled each time it is called (rather than being stored in the execution plan cache). Depending on frequency of call / cost of compilation this may be a viable strategy
2) depending on the complexity of the function fn_Function you may be able to re-write it in-line. I can't know without seeing the function if it is a multi-statement or inline table valued function, which is relevant here.
Hope this gives some pointers on things to look at.
