REST Client extension - API response as HTML - visual-studio-code

I wanted to use vs code's extension REST client for testing purposes. So I used a curl of an existing API running on my local machine. But instead of JSON, I got HTML as a response. The curl works as expected in the terminal but not with the extension.
The same Behaviour is with another extension named Thunder Client.
Postman is getting JSON responses for the same API I believe that issue lies within vs code itself, I just don't know how to resolve it.

According to this article:
https://softwareengineering.stackexchange.com/questions/207835/is-it-ok-to-return-html-from-a-json-api
If you have declared you only accept one format in the header then the service should only send back that format or throw an error. If you have not put an ACCEPT in the header, the the service may send back whatever.
Check what is in the ACCEPT header:
But also check how Thunder Client translates the call in powershell:
I see that in my call the response is translated to JSON. I would guess that most REST clients are assuming that users want to work in JSON. Maybe that's what your two REST clients are doing?

Data Factory can't download CSV file from web API with Basic Auth

I'm trying to download a CSV file from a website in Data Factory using the HTTP connector as my source linked service in a copy activity. It's basically a web call to a url that looks like https://www.mywebsite.org/api/entityname.csv?fields=:all&paging=false.
The website uses basic authentication. I have manually tested by using the url in a browser and entering the credentials, and everything works fine. I have used the REST connector in a copy activity to download the data as a JSON file (same url, just without the ".csv" in there), and that works fine. But there is something about the authentication in the HTTP connector that is different and causing issues. When I try to execute my copy activity, it downloads a csv file that contains the HTML for the login page on the source website.
While searching, I did come across this Github issue on the docs that suggests that the basic auth header is not initially sent and that may be causing an issue.
As I have it now, the authentication is defined in the linked service. I'm hoping that maybe I can add something to the Additional Headers or Request Body properties of the source in my copy activity to make this work, but I haven't found the right thing yet.
Suggestions of things to try or code samples of a working copy activity using the HTTP connector and basic auth would be much appreciated.
The HTTP connector expects the API to return a 401 Unauthorized response after the initial request. It then responds with the basic auth credentials. If the API doesn't do this, it won't use the credentials provided in the HTTP linked service.
If that is the case, go to the copy activity source, and in the additional headers property add Authorization: Basic followed by the base64 encoded string of username:password. It should look something like this (where the string at the end is the encoded username:password):
Authorization: Basic ZxN0b2njFasdfkVEH1fU2GM=`
It's best if that isn't hard coded into the copy activity but is retrieved from Key Vault and passed as secure input to the copy activity.
I suggest you try to use the REST connector instead of the HTTP one. It supports Basic as authentication type and I have verified it using a test endpoint on HTTPbin.org
Above is the configuration for the REST linked service. Once you have created a dataset connected to this linked service you can include it in you copy activity.
Once the pipeline executes the content of the REST response will be saved in the specified file.

How to use postman API client with openchain API server

I have just installed openchain (http://openchain.org)
I can check it on http://nossl.wallet.openchain.org/ but I would like to check API using Postman Rest client tool on my PC.
I'm using postman rest client and I have tried URI many times but response is empty : https://docs.openchain.org/en/latest/api/method-calls.html
Please give some advises, thanks in advance !
You should want it to look like something like this picture. Check your headers also, when I use the URL https://www.openchain.org/endpoint/query/recordversion?key=FFFF I get nothing and then when I check the headers I see there is a 404 status which means I was able to communicate with the server but it couldn't find my key. Which makes sense since I am just passing a random key. So see if you are getting a 404 error in your headers and if so then make sure your key is correct.

Why am I getting request method GET not supported?

I am using PostMan as a REST client to test this API method Cisco ACL Analysis API. specifically POST /acl/trace or getAClTracksStd (first go to Policy Analysis)
Here is my PostMan HTTP test call
Does anyone who is familiar with PostMan understand why I am getting this "Request method 'GET' is not supported" error from the server? I am making a POST HTTP request, not GET.(Selected from Drop down menu) It make more sense for me to get a input invalid parameter error or something.
Just to show that the endpoint url works, heres a HTTP test request that works
(same link, host->host API -> GET /host/{startIndex}/{recordsToReturn}
There's two issues that I'm seeing with your REST call. First, the error you're seeing is because the call needs to be preceded by "https://". Second, remove the interface IDs parameter and values. You should get a response with data after making these changes.
Your json looks erronuous (comma after the destIp) - and the server probably always responds with a default confusing error message in this case. (Postman is very well tested and it sends POST).

Is it possible to change/modify properties of a CR using OSLC_CM?

Is it possible to modify a property of a change request by using the OSLC-CM REST API of a change management system. The system that I'm trying to achieve that is Rational Change.
I can browse and query via the REST API, but to modify anything I need to resort to command line which is rather slow.
Is there a way?
BR,
Pawel
To update resources using the OSLC-CM REST API you simply just can use HTTP PUT. In order to do this, you'll first need the URL of the Change Request.
The steps to achieve this (using any HTTP client) are:
acquire URL for Change Request (usually done by query, or stored reference, etc)
Perform an HTTP GET on that URL, specifying a format for use in editing. This is done using 'Accept' header, some typical values would be 'application/xml', 'application/json' or 'application/rdf+xml'.
Note, it is a good idea to set the header 'OSLC-Core-Verson: 2.0' as well to ensure you are working with the 2.0 formats.
Once you have fetched the resource, modify the property to the value you want.
Using HTTP PUT, send the modified resource in the content body to the same URL you fetched the resource from.
Additionally you will most likely need to pass along some additional headers to help the server detect any possible conflict.
You should get back a 200 (OK) or 204 (No content) response on success.
An optimization would be to do the same steps as above but only request the properties of interest and only send them by using the selective properties feature of OSLC.
So I've finally got it working with some help from googlegroups
To recap what I've done so that someone else might benefit too (I really have searched for it and the IBM documentation is as in most of the cases not helping):
So to modify PR/CR' implement_actual_effort attribute on the Rational Change server the following procedure was successful (using Firefox REST plugin):
1. In Headers set: Accept to application/xml, Content-Type to application/xml
Put the oslc address of the cr i URL in my case it was:
http://[IP:PORT]/change/oslc/db/[DB hex ID]/role/User/cr/[web_encoded_name_of_the_CR]?oslc_cm.properties=change:implement_actual_effort
(note in browser http://[IP:PORT]/change/oslc/db/[DB hex ID]/role/User/cr/[web_encoded_name_of_the_CR] will open change page of the CR/PR)
In REST client set Method to GET and press SEND
Click on the Response Body (RAW), copy xml Body
Change Method to PUT, change the value of the attribute (in the xml in Body window)
Press SEND
Attribute should have been changed right now, and the response should be similiar to what you've sent, with the attribute showing the change.
Note that to change an attribute (called property from oslc point of view) one has to provide ?oslc_cm.properties=[properties delimited with comma]
and in the request body xml the same properties have to be present, if I remember correctly if the property isn't mentioned in the xml it will be set to default
I hope this helps someone

How to reproduce a request via cURL

I want to capture how parameters are being sent. Usually what I do is to make a request and check on Firebug's params tab what are the parameters sent. However, when I try to do this on the following site (http://www.infraero.gov.br/voos/index_2.aspx), it doesn't work - I can't see what are the parameters in order to repeat this request using curl. How can I get it? I'm not sure but I think that cookies are being used.
EDIT
I was able to get the request content, but couldn't understand it. It seems it uses javascript to generate the proper request. How can I reproduce this request via cURL?
Did you see this previous question cURL post data to asp.net page ? That might answer the question right there (all I did was search "ASP.NET cURL"). And this one: Unable to load ASP.NET page using Python urllib2 talks about Python, but it approaches it in a way that should translate to cURL.
But for my $0.02, I wouldn't bother trying to untangle ASP.NET's and __VIEWSTATE and javascript. Is it an absolute requirement that you use cURL?
I think you would be better off using a client that works more like a real browser and understands javascript. That's a bit of work, but it isn't as bad as it sounds. I've done this before with http://watirwebdriver.com/ and a short Ruby script. Here's how to do it with Python and Mechanize (this is probably a bit more lightweight).
http://phantomjs.org/ is another option that you script using javascript. If you Google "Scraping ASP.NET" you will see that this is a common problem.
You didn't say how you want it done, but you can send the request with curl simply with curl -d name1=contents1&name2=contents2 [TARGETURL] etc.
Note that you probably first need to fetch the main page and extract the "__VIEWSTATE" form field and submit back that (VERY huge) contents to get your submission accepted.
